  • Tiny Drawknife Makes Some Big Shavings
    I'm always playing with drawknife designs and edge geometry. This one seems to have nailed it. In other news we will be launching a storefront on the website hopefully by November. As my skills grow in this trade so will the inventory. At first it will be mostly drawknives, axes and skinning knives that are made from scrap tool steel. Waste not want not.

    Love the little fella. Now I'd like to see some slicks made - these days, slicks are in short supply... Long ones with plenty of flat to smooth the joints. Good sized handles. Then there's the pig stickers --- You know those chisels they make heavy mortises with. Maybe you should just go back to timber framing...🤣🤣🤣

    • @TheTradesmanChannel
      @TheTradesmanChannel  2 роки тому

      I love my timber framing and I'll do more with it but with the cost of materials (concrete, roofing, etc.) it has become cost prohibitive at the moment. Making tools is something I like just as much and I can afford to do it.

    To keep the Holes for the handles straight. Make a jig that will hold the handle straight up and down. I'm thinking a thick block of wood with a hole in the middle big enough to put the handle in it to where it doesn't wonder and stays up and down. Clamp that to the drill press. Should make it accurate each time an easy.

    This is getting to be down right Spooky!
    I am talking of the wood turning ..... another of my interests!
    Now I know you are an anti-safety sally but, Could you put your rest a little closer to the wood? All it takes is one good catch and it is like holding onto a spark lead as the engine is turned. Suddenly your arm is not where you remember it being and it feels like God himself had punched you (don't ask me how I know).
    The other bit I would suggest you try ..... now don't swear at me, hear me out .... is Carbide!
    I used to turn with the same gear you are using until I watched a guy called "Cap Eddie Castelain" do some videos on carbides (well worth a watch). So feeling a tad gullible I tried one. OMG! You Have to try it. The wood simply vanishes off the spindle, no messing about. You can even get reasonable finishes with them, but if you are not satisfied just run a scraper over it to get a glass finish!
    One other tip to get dead centre holes for the reins is to drill it from your tailstock in the lathe.
    Glad to see you still having fun though! ;o)

    Hey Jim. Just found your channel. The draw knives are really nice. I am wondering if you are going to experiment with the handles. Most draw knives have round handles. I am wondering if an ovoid handle for instant indexing might work. Like knives and axes. You almost don't have to see the handle to set up in the neutral position for starting your cuts. You just feel it. Maybe a bit easier to make small angle adjustments as you make a cut. Better control? Just a suggestion. I just use the tools. I do not make them.

    • @TheTradesmanChannel
      @TheTradesmanChannel  2 роки тому

      Good morning. I actually have made oval handles and to be honest they weren't as easy to use as the round ones. The shape of the knife actually lends itself to natural indexing as you start the cut. Pleasure to meet you sir.

    • @bbrachman
      @bbrachman 2 роки тому

      @@TheTradesmanChannel Thanks Jim. The fact that you tried it and they don't work just proves that the eons these have been made, round handles still work the best.
