I have given up talking to my children and grandchildren. I am 81 and hubby 85. I am taking care of us now and not worrying about the rest. When we are gone they will not survive and I feel bad saying this. All the canners jars, dehydrators, solar ovens and survival equipment, old timey books, etc gathered over the years will be given to charity or dumpster. They don’t want any of it, don’t want to learn and don’t want to talk about it. Sad, sad, times we are living in.

You might want to think about giving them to a good home where they would be appreciated. Some place where they will be loved, used, taken care of and possibly be used as teaching tools for someone else. I hope you continue to take care of you and your husband.

I have 17,19 and 24 year old young adult children. Homeschooled all of them from the start. We "pretend" homesteaded in a suburb of a large city while they were young. We bought a small 7 acre farm 2 years ago to start homesteading "for real" as a family as we have seen this coming since 08 and were finally in a position to buy a small property. Our boys are on their second season of raising/processing 100 heritage chix for our family's yearly meat and egg supply. They are tilling, planting, watering gardens as well this year. They are learning to care for the land and helping work our small family business. You are so right, Patera! Nevermind "launching" them into this mess. This is what they need right now!

He's coming home to Texas for good before too long. Hopefully he will have a wife, kiddos, and we can garden, can, all together. At 77, it's a little harder to do some things by myself. @@maryjane-vx4dd Wow, what a wonderful MiL and mom, to offer such wonderful opportunities! That’s sad to hear no one took her up on her canning party offer last time, but glad you reached out to her. It sounds corny, but maybe you two could host a Canning Olympics or something with prizes that would entice the grandkids, with homemade cookies and ice cream at the end of the day for them as well.
We see it as providing for the family, especially for during lean times, but making it into a game of some sort may be what it takes to bring in some people, especially from the younger crowd. Most kids love games and some competition with fun/tasty prizes.

My 12 year old granddaughter knows how to can vegetables, make jams and jellies, and use a sewing machine and she makes doll clothes. My 6 year old grandson can fish from the river near our house and does a good job cleaning the fish, and both children help out with all the chores around our home. Hopefully they will remember these things long after I’m gone.

I started doing "campfire survival days" with my kids in 2016. We would forage, cook on open fire with cast iron, go all day without using lights/electricity, practice water conservation, and talk about historical hard times. In all seasons, mind you, we would do this, for a couple days at a time. It's a fond memory of the kids- they don't know it's emergency preparedness, and they don't fear it. My oldest ones now realize that it's more of a drill for hard times coming/here. But I praise God that He encouraged me to start those little campfire days years ago.

We are debt free and have custody of our teenage grandson. We have chosen to take him on a Western US tour this summer. We want him to meet people and listen to older people as they prepare. We are fortunate to be able to do this, but we feel it is important for him to witness things before they change beyond recognition. We are enjoying lunch picnics at rest stops and carrying food for hotel breakfasts. He is witnessing this beautiful country and we are helping people along the way. He is enjoying it and learning so much.

I planted green, purple and yellow BUSH beans. All 3 different packs that were unopened. None of the yellow or purple came up. The green ones turned out to be Pea pods that need a trellis. Had to act fast to put one up along the entire area. I already had pea pods growing somewhere else on a trellis and they were from a different package. Also had 53 volunteer tomato plants, all were repotted to relocate because they were popping up in my potato area. Dozens went to neighbors and 5 still left in pots. Then a neighbor said she started too many peppers. I had none. Now I have 48 sweet orange, yellow, red pepper plants. Community and knowing your neighbors mean a lot these days.

Many factors impact germination. If the soil is not warm enough beans (in my experience) fail to take. Beans that are black or purple can go out earlier than lighter beans as dark beans absorb the warmth. It’s probably not too late to replant. I am in 6b and plant beans 2 or 3 times during the season so there is enough for fresh eating and canning. Keep after it.

Yes it takes so much longer. Yes it can be messier. But our 18yo does his own truck maintenance and the 17yo old runs his own business and the 15yo can build you anything you need and the 9 and 11yo can make a meal, no help, and clean up when they’re done. The training never stops, but with such a large age range we get to see the benefits and be reminded of why the 6yo needs to help with laundry.

As a kid growing up on the farm, I plowed the garden, tilled with a front line tiller and pulled the weeds as well as made the furrows and planted the seeds. I helped my stepmother shuck the corn and break the beans and watched her do the canning. I have the memories of this but who's I had paid more attention to her canning the different foods that we kept in the basement. Dad was so proud of all the jars of food that he made the mistake of showing it off to someone and a few nights later someone opened the basement window, climbed into the basement and stole about half of what had been canned and put back. All that hard work, money, and time stolen. I learned from that not to ever show anyone my food supplies.

No paper towels so Rags were used, I remember her plucking chickens , My grandfather on my moms side could do anything from building his own homes, to performing surgeries and he wasn't even a doctor? One memory visiting Granddad was he had a cat and nine tails hanging behind the kitchen door! any guesses what that was for? Children were respectful and polite OR ELSE! You can't prepare those that refuse to listen or acknowledge any issues. I have been talking for many years and several months back was told by my son n law that they and grandchildren no longer wished to hear about these things and if I did not cease I was no longer welcomed to share their lives. My heart was beyond broken as my daughter said nothing!! I pulled back and I will no longer say a word. However, I will still do as I've always done. Once I'm called out of this world to be with Jesus my words will ring loudly!
I also just dealt with a friend tell me she could not pull into my drive way because of my husband's Trup flag and the American flag that flies. She said she could not risk a black person seeing her in my drive! Really??? Oh well it is what it is and God will deal as God wishes. Stay alert and strong folks!!!

I'm staying with a long time friend who needs to be watched over, health issues, old... 5 acre property, BUT build on marsh land (someone else built home). All around house is SAND! I feel like I'm back in Iraq!!😳
I was bound and determined to have a garden this year. So, I got creative. I bought laundry baskets at dollar store, lined with heavy duty 30 gallon garbage bags. Poked holes in bottom for drainage. Got free pallets from local stores. Put plant containers on pallets so no ground drowning when marsh water in forest overflows in heavy rain. I covered the pallets, plants with a 25ft clear plastic roll during rains, while they were small to avoid drowning. Spring lasted until a few weeks ago (40's at night...too cold for small plantings. They were kept warm (6mil thick plastic). Now, I can proudly say my garden is rocking!!!😊😊😝 corn is 2ft tall, peas are climbing high (blossoms already),, beans, carrots, buttercrunch lettuce, kale, cucumbers, pickling cukes, tons of diff tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, pumpkins, Big Max pumpkin (gets over 100 lbs!) Cabbage, diff lettuces, celery, onions, garlic.... tomatoes - I got free tomatoes at the local Salvation army... I squished the seeds into the dirt...hocus pocus! Got Roma, Beefstake, cherry tomatoes, sweet 100 tomatoes, campari tomatoes. Growing yams and potatoes from free veggies!! All winter, 3 times a week, I'd go to the salvation army when the free food gets dropped off. You can take as much as you want...so I got all veggies, canned wild caught salmon, canned veggies, walnuts, pecans, canned beef. Canned port (32oz cans!!) I dehydrated allll the veggies, and put in mylar bags and sealed with oxygen absorbers. Two dehydrators running 24 hours a day. No heat on 2nd floor, but dehydrators kept it warm this past winter. My younger sisters are so impressed, THEY'VE started gardens!! My take is never mind trying to convince people, take care of YOU an your family. In time, SOME people will be inspired by you and start taking care of business!!
Hunker down, brace for impact. Be ready!!💥💥

My granddaughters, ages 8, 6, and 4 made a simple salve with white clover flowers, creeping charlie, plantain and yarrow. We did a whipped salve because that way they were not working with anything hot. We melted the wax, shea butter and aloe butter into the infused oil in a crock pot. I poured it into a bowl and stuck it in the freezer. They were able to beat it with the hand mixer and we spooned it into little jars. I printed labels and they had to cut them out and put them on the jars. They know those four plants well. We did not add an essential oil because one of them rejects most scents. We made about 24 jars that they can use at home and gift to friends.

Wouldn't you know it, they were visiting recently and saw it, got all excited because it's all over their yard too, just like at our grandparents' farm growing up. I mentioned we make creeping charlie tea to deal with colds and illnesses in the winter. Well, this time I got their attention and they've been researching it, very excited now. He has been told how the world has changed for the last 4 years & I was so worried about him starting this journey & maybe it's his generation, how he was raised, whatever it was- he has decided he wasn't going to stop putting his dreams on hold to sit around & find out what may happen. I think I have been just waiting for the shoe to drop for the past 4 years & now I realize- he is right. We can't just sit around & wait to live out our dreams. He's lost 4 years already so yes- both his momma & daddy will be right there helping to get this dream of his done. Just hope all goes well as he will be finishing up around election time. He had to learn to save his money to buy the engine and all the other parts and fluid it has taken to get to running. He has just a couple things to finish up but it will be complete by Sunday. It's hard to watch, but that's all I can do when words fall on deaf ears. I took a client out for brunch, and for two orders of French Toast, coffee, and one juice, our bill came to $78.00! I nearly fell off my chair. I'm done eating out. Unbelievable...

Never really too "late" to plant. We had so much rain here in SWVA that my garden got in late, but I still planted it out. Still have a couple things that I want to see if I can grow to put in today. As far as the shenanigans out there, always listen, learn, and tuck away to remember tomorrow. If you're like me, and didn't really have role models to follow when younger, check out a library, UA-cam, community elders. There is so much information available, you just have to look for it. Never get so discouraged that you surrender. I'm in my mid 50's and have finally learned how to can more than jelly, grow more than just tomatoes, and bake more than just a 'store-bought' cake. God Bless you all.

Anything is possible with God. I’m 70yo grew up in NYC. My grandpa born in 1896 In Lithuania on apple orchard and horses came to America and taught me to plant a garden when I was 5yo. Never did I stray from that and today in Western NY we are 3 generations on the farm 70 acres I started and now my sons. We grow a majority of our food, live half on grid and half off. Have our own spring water, can, freeze dry and cold store our food. And we are homeschooling since 1985 and now my grandkids and it is a challenge but I do think the light comes on differently for all. Don’t give up folks just persevere and pray. Blessings and stay the course.

About to have 5 kids 5 and under, just came in from milking our new milking goat. My oldest is not quite five but she’s tries her hand at milking every morning and she’s getting the hang of it! It’s hard now for my husband and I trying to do all the things milking, gardening, keeping the animals especially with all the little ones who are too little to really help. But it’s so precious what they can do and I was telling my husband i am doing all this with them now even though she can only get those few squirts in, so that in a few years she will be able to do the milking. Thanks for the encouraging words! ❤️

I have so many memories of helping my grandparents on the farm. Cooking, canning, picking, chickens, horses etc. I retained it thank God. I still need to but my big girl pants on at 53 and teach myself to can. But we garden, have chickens, rabbits etc. ppl think we are crazy, I don’t care. I wish my adult kids would get more involved.

I’ve spent this week canning and freeze drying! So relaxing and making one feel so blessed to have the abundance of what the Lord has given me.

My parents never told us how bad they had it. But my dad was always how he survived during war in Germany. With camping trips we were shown how to rough it. We fished for food. Learned how to work together and pull your own weight. We all had to switch jobs each night. Loved it😅. Most of all we were taught to depend on god growing up.

I remember watching my Grandmother, Mama, and my Aunt canning. I didn’t think about canning until about 10 years ago. That when my son, which was about 40 said he wanted to learn. He said it was going to be a lost art and he needed to learn. Well we both learned together. He wanted to start out with tomatoes. I thought Lord please help me because if you don’t do it right they will spoil, which y’all know that. Short story we have been canning and haven’t lost a jar of anything we have done, veggies, tomatoes, soups, etc. teach them when they are young!!

My mom had a huge garden and we all helped with it and we canned with her. Even my brother's had to help. She sewed our clothes . We milked cows and raised beef. We didn't buy much food

My 8 yr old grandson started helping me plant my garden 2 years ago, He absolutely loves it. He will stay with me during the summer a week to 2 at a time. When he isn't here he wants pictures of the garden to see how much it has grown. He knows whilhe is here, video games and tv time is very limited, honestly between the garden, chickens and other farm activities he doesn't ask to play videos or watch TV, come bed time, hes ready to go to sleep so we can get up and do it all over . I too was blessed to have multiple generations of grandparents that passed down tons of wisdom, often wish I could have those conversations again

Monkey see --- monkey do - Let the little ones see you work and PRAY 🙏🙏🙏🙏 My daughter would rather do ANYTHING as long as it was with momma - She just wanted to be with me and me with her - All grown up now - she says THATS why she felt loved!

my daughter just told me how other peers of hers don't take care of their parents or grandparents and she can't understand why they act that way and she and her sister would take care of my husband and I in a heartbeat and not fight over it. I told her it's probably because she SAW us do for my parents in their old age. Watching and learning life.
