I think that was part of his embarrassment, that even with him getting more comfortable filling in it's still a huge relief to cede it to Daichi and fall back in line behind a more experienced captain. It's hard to explain how it feels to be capable of taking the lead but still not being comfortable with it, yet being ashamed when you hand it over to someone else even if they're more capable.

The main arc of the manga is just this academic year, but we are going to get a look into where these characters are as adults. Not going to spoil people's future careers or relationships, but: everyone we see seems really happy with where they are, and I get very proud and emotional!

That moment was his last point in high school, with this team, and it was their losing point. But unfortunately, it looks like the anime won't cover everything up until the end of the manga. Which is truly a shame, because the manga is genuinely incredible, like, seriously amazing. So for everyone mildly interested in this show, once you are caught up with the anime, I can HIGHLY recommend giving the manga a genuine chance. It's worth it ^^
