@@aaronramirez2610In Texas? Yes. Unless we're talking about a once in a lifetime winter storm, I would definitely much prefer no power in winter.

Harvey was flooding not wind. No power outages. People love to complain. We live in heavily treed areas. Wind knocks trees down. It’s a mess. Not sure why people are so confused. Btw I still currently don’t have power and it sucks but can understand how much of a mess the fallen trees make.

Yesterday, Centerpoint leaned toward Fort Bend and Brazoria Counties over Harris. With 75% of the customers and 74% of the outage, we got 60% of yesterday's repairs.
I am not sure what’s happening at Center Point! I feel there’s no progress in whatever they are doing.
@rebeccapaul4410 I'm definitely thankful and don't have issues with them. I just wish they had help because it's terrible right now.
Our city is not prepared for any storm. Like we live in the coast! And yet a category 1 was able to put 2 million people out power in this heat?! Oh hell no! Something is wrong!
It was that way when I lived there in the '90's. Seems nothing has changed much.
A tropical storm or category 1 can do a lot of damage like Tropical storm Allison.
Clearly, Texans aren’t accustomed to dealing with hurricane aftermath. I lived in Florida for 27 years (Tampa Bay) and remember some years ago going without electricity for 5 days after receiving a glancing blow from a hurricane. It was absolutely miserable and frustrating.
It also got me thinking. I had to sit down and think that if just a glancing blow from a hurricane could result in such misery, what would we be facing from a direct hit from a Category 4 or 5 hurricane, which is now the new norm for hurricanes in the climate change era.
Fast forward to today and I am now living once again in New England as of a week and a half ago. People living in hurricane prone areas today are going to have to make similar decisions or face the type of destruction that Hurricanes Maria and Katrina wrought on Puerto Rico and New Orleans respectively.
I think what has happens is this time around it took down power in places that it usually doesn’t… god knows every summer like clockwork we lose power atleast 2-3 times only once if we are lucky… this happens every year, I’m not sure about all the complaining it always takes 3-14 days to get power restored. I’ve never seen it come back on as quick as they are expecting it too.. all I can say to all the people complaining is I’m sorry… you’ll be alright. And Welcome to Texas lol. The food had gone bad, there is no hot water to take showers, and even when using a generator to power up the electric fans, you still feel like they are not on!!!

If you have an elderly relative or friend in Houston, remind them that sitting in a tub of cool water can save their life!!!
If they have an electric water heater cold is the only option. It's actually not even very cold since it is so hot out
Thank you for saying that
...even our tepid tap water. If the tub is on the other side of the house from the meter, they need to let the hot water run from the pipes first. Pipes are generally run through the attic, and the water gets very hot in the summer. Because the ground doesn't freeze, utility lines aren't buried very deep, so you don't get 55 degree water in summer.
@@maryjackson1194 Pipes in the attic? Sounds pretty shoddy.
This is awful, it really sounds like there weren't enough redundancies in place and no proper planning documented by Centerpoint in this type of situation. That baffles me considering Harvey happened not that long ago. I hope the Texas leadership of Centerpoint is held accountable. This is probably another reason why Texas should join the national power grid though. It really a cascade of issues here, but Centerpoint is front and center of them.
being connected to another grid isnt going to do crap when the line down the street is down
@crapshack9175 then do the maintenance needed
IBEW 49'ers here...we built a hurricane proof power line from matamoros mexico coal plant straight into downtown houston in 1993. thank your climate terrorist for their wind turbine fields and solar panels wiped out by the storms that are not hurricane proof. when texas froze excel stole power from northern minnesota and sent it to texas so you wouldn't have to put on a sweater. mean while northern minnesota homes were destroyed when pipes froze and people died or lost limbs due to frostbite due to power black out -20ºF to keep texans from wearing warm clothes in +30ºF weather
When ERCOT was formed, no one went out and cut the wires! Texas electricity is managed and regulated separately. Re Harvey: Texas didn't get Harvey funds until 2021 because of delays for HUD to write the rules for allocating the money. When it was finally granted, NO FUNDING was allocated to the City of Houston, nor to Harris County itself, only to 4 small industrial cities in Harris County. Ben Carson's Department of Housing and Urban Development took Housing and Urban Development funds and wrote rules that gave preference to sparse population and high-value property...AKA chemical plants and other industrial/commercial properties. Harris County contested the award; I'm not sure how much we ever got.
The issue is that a month before Houston got hit with a major Tornado that did significant damage to there infrastructure. So still dealing with that then to get hit with a Hurricane is just bad luck as they not much you can do to stop trees from being blown over and tearing up lines etc...
Everything is bigger in Texasss 💪💪💪

Great idea to have your own power gird ran, seems to be working great it seems, time and time again
Every house should have, at least, a small generator and a small window AC in storage. Mine cost a total of less than $300. I had them operating in less than one hour to cool my bedroom and run a fan. I am 71 yo. My power was out for 26 hours.
You are like me, in that pepper, and I am ready for a fallout of no electricity. Good for you!
They weren’t in Puerto Rico in 2017 after Hurricane Maria. There were sectors that were without power for almost two years.
The worst part is they aren't properly communicating time frames. I have been told monday(day of storm), Tuesday, Wednesday they said it was fixed then opps its not, and now their new stupid tracker is just more bs. The automated system called to "update" me by saying my power was out. Now idk if itbis true but appears many linemen from put of town arent even working due to wage negotiations. Sure the temps are horrible but add that with almost 88% humidity and no breeze outside its a freaking nightmare

It's not the grid overall this time. It's Centerpoint specifically. And yeah, the governor's office is "concerned" but they'll just pay them off and do this again next storm until someone holds them accountable.
I've just got my power back "YAY" (live in Houston). Although I was better off because I had a generator, so I always had tv, internet, fridge, etc., but the heat and humidity was getting to me. Nothing happened to my house, but just in my block there are houses and cars damaged by trees. I feel bad for those neighbors. Well, I hope more people get their power back.

The utility workers can only do so much in this heat as well. This is a State wide issue - not a utility company issue in my view. The state of Texas & our Government needs to get it together on the electrical grid, flooding & hurricane infrastructure for the entire Stats of Texas. This is only the 1st storm coming through this year. I feel so bad for folks that are caught up in this mess & those electric workers.
I hope Texas is protecting its utility workers in life threatening heat. They should be selling power generators at a discount to get through this event.
Me, too. I know people are miserable and frustrated but don't blame the workers who are literally putting their lives on the line for our safety and comfort. Blame the grid issues on the governor who isn't even in the country!
@Kimberly-qg3ks yea they are fine sitting in trucks most of day because no one told them where to work
when you have a for profit monopoly in charge of the electrical grid, it is very much a problem with the utility company. It doesn't help that the state government allows this.

And Abbott is in Asia????? Guess he’s talking lessons from Ted Cruz. Texas has such pathetic leadership.
This happened to my family about 20 years ago. No power or running water for two weeks in Florida (August). It was horrible. I blamed myself and I took action. I got prepared with a backup generator, gas cans, food and water for 2 weeks. The utility has been out many times through many hurricanes since then but we have never been without power. The point is: If you blame anyone but yourself then you are destine to be right back in the same or worse situation. Take action to be self sufficient for at least two weeks. Things are going to get much worse going forward. This is your wakeup call.
Many posts on houston news stories claiming how great florida power is. You say it's not? Not sure who to believe.
@@mike_w-tw6jd I am not claiming the Florida power is not good. The response to hurricanes in Florida is 2nd to none. For that matter, I think the power companies response in Houston is pretty darn good. I don't know what people expect? If a hurricane knocks down half the infrastructure in a large city its not like you just flip a switch, it takes a hell of an effort to restore. I think two weeks to restore 95% of customers is very reasonable in a catastrophic situation. That's why I say get prepared to take care of yourself for at least two weeks.
I believe Centerpoint is not able to take care of so many customers. The government should be considering not allowing them to handle the power lines for so many customers. The government should only allow one company to take care of small portions of the power lines
