The thing about small talk is that so many people are so bad at it that it actually has become an extremely boring thing to do. What most small talk conversations are about is essentially low key boasting to others while they wait for their turn to do their own boasting. If the people involved in the conversation can both reign in their egos and make the conversation entertaining for eachother then small talk is fun
Why are people assuming that an “elitist approach” is the reason why he doesn’t enjoy small talk? As if the people sitting beside him, at his table weren’t “elites” anyway.
I think too many people here are misconstruing an aversion to dishonesty as a hatred of small talk. Small talk is important, healthy and incredibly useful. But, sometimes, people will try to engage you in small talk for totally dishonest reasons - not because they care. Either because they are trying to 'test' you, or just want to be seen talking to you. It's the disingenuous tendencies that people like this bring with small talk that's the issue.

Tragic that people like Elon Musk (especially since he's a business owner who manages people) have chosen to remain that way and believing it's simply a sign that they're better than everyone else.
