  • My 1,007th kite video. This huge smile makes a great display, thanks to the design skill of Marcel Burri. I hope some of his other designs will be made available too, sometime. This one can now be bought from Peter Lynn Kites, who will post to almost anywhere.
    Review is on my website www.jimskites.co.nz

    Love it Jim! It was great to see the small yellow smiley delta dancing alongside as well like an excited child in front of his big parent :-)

      I thought that was the best way to give an idea of the size, Nigel - better than getting myself in the video again!

    What a nice smile! Huge next to his little brother!

      He's big all right, Mark. Expensive, too, as someone has mentioned, but I think I'll get great value from it, since Smileys are my favourite kites.

    Outstanding! Great to see such a positive attitude these days.

      Glad you like it, Hal. I wish I'd had it a couple of weeks earlier for the 1,000th video, of course, but it will get a lot of use now. This will be my "signature kite," I think.

    That looks like a great kite I wouldn't have thought it would be so stable in the air.

      Marcel Burri is clearly a great designer. The tails must have a lot to do with the stability, of course.

      It's a piece called Calypso Beach Walk, from the UA-cam free audio library.

    Love it, the yellow against that blue sky is fantastic. Would stand going larger still. 😀

      Larger still? Some people are never satisfied, David! I wouldn't mind an even bigger one, but the price would be bigger too, unfortunately.

    My friend, it makes me happy to see that my smiley is joyful, and also in New Zealand good flies. I liked your video.

      It's a great kite, Marcel, and I'm happy that you liked the video. I love your work, and maybe some day I will get the chance to buy more. I'm glad that you gave Craig and the team at PLK the chance to make Smiley, anyway.

    That's one big smile! I am sure you will be flying this kite often.
    Sorry to miss you yesterday. I wasn't smiling much after such a long day of travel.
    Nice to see some new kites might be coming out of PTL factory for single line fliers.
    How do you find all the best music ?

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  7 років тому

      The Christchurch fog has caused a lot of disruption recently, Carl, including twice for you, of course. We shall have to arrange a meeting soon.
      I don't know if PLK are planning any more affordable designs such as this one. I do have some more new kites coming from overseas.
      The music is just from the UA-cam free audio library, but it takes a lot of time to search out the good stuff among all the rubbish.

    Hi Jim where’s does the smiley actually inflate and what line do you recommend?

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  6 років тому

      It inflates through a mesh-covered opening at the top of the "face," which you can see if you look carefully at the video. I always use 300lb braided dacron line, but in a light wind you could use a lighter line if you wanted.

    I was smiling too until I saw the PRICE! OUCH! :-(

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  7 років тому

      Yes, it was a bit painful, but the quality is first-class, and the design great, so I anticipate getting good value for it as it will probably be one of my most-flown kites.

    • @DOLEWDREW
      @DOLEWDREW 7 років тому

      Hi Jim, I am sure that it will have mass appeal and that the quality is top notch. But still, it's a smiley face: 2 dots and a crescent! Compared to a 10 ft Chinese opera mask with all the detailing and long flowing beard that cost about a third of the price and flies very well; this big smiley's price makes me want to frown. Nice kite but when you put Mr Lynn's name on a product you might need some Kuwaiti oil dinars in order to find it affordable ;-)!

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  7 років тому +1

      I agree, their pricing is very much on the high side. The Opera Mask is a far more intricate design and requires a lot of work. The simple Smiley still needs a fair bit, though, because of all the reinforcing lines and internal support lines, so it's not just the applique that costs. I'd certainly have liked it to be cheaper, but because of my liking for the Smiley motif, I wanted it anyway. I don't usually buy PL kites, because of the price and also the fact that most of them don't appeal, especially when you pay huge amounts for something that then needs an expensive lifter to get it in the air! Smiley not only flies well, but is a lifter itself, so double value. It's NOT a PL design, of course, although it has a PL Kites label sewn into it to show where it was made.

    • @DOLEWDREW
      @DOLEWDREW 7 років тому

      Those PL Kites labels can sure work some magic Jim ;-)! Well since we are on the topic or huge smiles and opera masks, if you ever want to put a really big silly grin on your own face, you "NEED" to get the magnificent 4.2 m x 20 m Black beard opera mask from City Of Smiling Angels. With EMS shipping included, it still cost less than the Big Smiley and considering that it is a kite that weighs over twenty pounds, it is a huge bargain in my humble estimation. Other places on Aliexpress have it at almost twice the price and even at that higher price it would be worth it! www.aliexpress.com/item/free-shipping-high-quality-large-soft-kite-20m-peking-opera-walk-in-sky-ripstop-nylon-kinderdrachen/32727771484.html?spm=2114.13010208.99999999.282.Ci81xb
