i really liked this. just a no-frills, solid piece of work
Totally agree that the crash investigators were cast as over-the-top panto villains when that's obviously not what real life is like. It was just a little hammy in parts but Hanks was brilliantly subtle. It often felt like they were dragging a very short story out into a feature length film. Good but not great.
Sully was the surprise film at the London Film Festival and I agree with the comments here it was a solid piece of film making. Not unremarkable as the good doctor would say but overall an entertaining 90 minutes. The last line of the film was particularly funny.
It's funny you mention this, in the Air Crash Investigation version of the accident the NTSB were - initially - blaming Sully and the crew. It was turned up a bit in that documentary as well.
They originally were going to retell the actual event, but Eastwood said it was repititous, as everyone knows what happened. He felt it would be be boring for the audience, so he wanted to add a part of the story no has heard before to keep it interesting. He called Sully, who told him about his experience with the investigators ( which he said in interviews wasn't a good one, but it wasn't as bad as the movie depicts) and that's when they changed the story.
"I would have done it in July!" Everyone laughs! Felt like an ending of Murder She Wrote!
Wonderfully cheesy likes... ..lol
'flight' starring Denzel anyone...? i really liked that.
That film was boring except the upside down scene.
I don't like complaining about it but yet again this does seem to be a case of a movie looking really grey.
Mr. Eastwood is a great director.
Ngéntot McKontolssen It's a refreshing change to see films being made from different perspectives, 99% of hollywood are bleeding-heart liberals and it gets really old.
magisterartium Couldn't you fit anymore buzzwords into your odious reply?
Chazbot I didn't particularly like the story in american sniper, but it was a excellently shot and acted movie.
It was based on a true story and Kyle did what he had to for his country.
Chazbot Wrong on all counts.
Chazbot You mad? Most of the movie was true and has been confirmed by the military archives comission with permission from kyles widow.
I don't think you are qualified to diagnose a psychopath. He did what he had to do for his country, luckily there are people among us who are able to do so. A country full of negative nancies like you and we'd be screwed.
Fake news? Are you a media outlet now? I think you are so obsessed with president trump that you find a way to slip him into every conversation you have.
Also I don't think you understand the concept of 'Based on a true story', obviously a certain level of artistic liberty is taken to make it more engaging and watchable.
You should meditate or see a therapist for your anger issues.
The talk of the overdramatisation and twisting of the truth is intriguing given the current post-truth political climate. It was a major complaint I had about American Sniper and I think it is a genuine problem that shouldn't be dismissed simply because it's done for the sake of making a better story.
It's not a documentary, it's a movie. I was expecting a Hollywood version of events and instead got a graceful class act. It helps to slightly exhadurate aspects in a creative piece so each stroke holds it's own. Goes for all mediums of creativity. In this case characters on the investigation had to be brought up a little for balance and for example set the pilots up for the proud moment in the corridor before the verdict.
My main problem is how wildly inaccurate the movie is. Everything involving the investigation is pure BS. Not once during the investigation did they think Sully was at fault in any way. Early on in the investigation they found that landing the plane in the Hudson was the only option. The computer simulators found that they could only make it back to an airport half the time if they turned back immediately, and could never make it back if they waited a realistic amount of time.
The sequences where they only use a human pilot and only wait a realistic amount of time at Sully's request is pure BS. They're not that incompetent.
The pilot and crew reaction, the crash sequence, the rescue were all very accurate. The investigation less so.

The crash and rescue made up about 5-10% of the movie. They are also widely known. The investigation is largely unknown to the general public. That's the main story of the movie, and it's complete nonsense.
One of the biggest dissapoinments long time, this movie was terrible made, best moments of the film were tom hanks walking on streets. So oversaturated, bad acting(tom hanks was okay in few scenes), unrealistic dialog and reactions, flashbacks without any transitions? investigation was a joke.. heck, cant point out much good from it execpt cinematography.
+ doritos Sounds like your having a bad day.

Why? My hopes were high bc good reviews and it was extreme poorly made movie with any technical aspect.
Eastwood's portrayal of the accident investigators was simply clueless. Sully should be on every fan's list of Most Historically Inaccurate Films of All Time.
The most worrying thing is how the birds damaged the plane.
Fantastic direction from Clint E and the way he constructed the scenes I think I only noticed the green screen once, I found Tom Hanks' wife a little annoying in those few moments she had over the phone even though I like Laura L, I felt the same as Mark when the investigation started but the end of it made sense and explained perfectly why they were so aggressive with them, so on that I disagree with Mark, when you watch it you'll understand without any spoilers.
Aaron Eckhart is still alive? That's nice.
Oscar bait?
Talia Price no released months ago in America, no were near Oscar season
Stephen Colville thank you
Stephen Colville mad Max was a action film, as far away from Oscar bait as you could get
Doing well in the Oscars doesn't mean it's been produced to win Oscars, though.
Talia Price or Coen's disease as it's called.
Want to see a much better movie than this thats also out at the moment. Go see Arrival. Now that is good.
No fake babies? :(
I thought this was the worst film of the year. A story that didn't deserve a feature film, a character too genuine to structure a narrative around and some profoundly dull filmmaking from the profoundly unimaginative Eastwood.
Lucien WD hey give Eastwood a break it wasn't a bad film for a 86 year old
Karl Karlos Suicide Squad, I agree, was worse, but I thought BvS and Ghostbusters had a few moments of colour and creativity-- which Sully totally lacked.
Jack Webb Manuel d'Olivera was making superb dramas past the age of 100. We should hold even Eastwood to a higher standard.
***** yup, and here's my review :) buzzhub.wordpress.com/2016/09/15/sully-review/
Lucien WD Jesus....erm. Succinct and...er....well, it was short at least. Please tell what is the set criteria for who deserves and who doesn't deserve to be the subject matter of a movie? Chesley Sullenberger did not fit this criteria because he couldn't leap a tall building in a single bound or didn't get his schooling at an academy for wizards etc.
so many things about this trend for making movies out of recent(ish) news stories hack me off that I don't even know where to start. cringeworthy.
Virgil Grissom yeah I'll be the world's first person to die of a cringe attack. ben stiller can play me in the movie adaptation.
The plane had plenty of energy to return to the airport. It was significant pilot error. Compounded by sickly americana greatly misguided patriotism and lack of integrity on the part of Sully.
