He understood, in early times when he was a child. I feel that. When you are young, like 11. No social life, (no woman, or if your a woman no men), no purpose, and poverty overcoming you with issues at home. You just need an escape sometimes. In that case, it's if you spread the word about the game, so other people interested, who can, will buy it ^^ And there is no loss, only gain, this way
Aww, the “just shapes and beats” anti-piracy screen is really wholesome. A lot of the people who can’t afford the games they want to play pirate them, and another chunk of the people who pirate games are kids. Maybe not necessarily kids, but minors and people who still have a lot of growing up to do. This take on anti-piracy compared to creeping out the player or just glitching out their save file might actually make people realize there’s more to the game then just the game, there’s actual people who rely on those games for money and who put their heart and soul into it. Anyways, sorry for ranting. I just thought that was touching.
I have to agree. I think it's called epic games, but it's a platform like steam, but every week they have a few games you can get from free. It wasn't pirating, but it was like, probably not good for the game company themselves. It had celeste for free, and I got it. I played basically the whole game, buy never finished some of the extra stuff. But a year or so later, when I wanted to play it again, instead of just opening it on computer, I decided to buy the game on switch to help support the developers for their awesome work.
Honestly, I love that JSAB doesn’t openly ridicule or ruin the experience for pirates, just encourages them to buy the game, or just recommend it to friends and stuff. I find that really cool. And for those of you who are curious, the wholesomeness doesn’t end here. There is a casual mode for the story, and there’s a really sweet message that’s like, “we get it, it’s hard sometimes. We’re not judging, just have fun!” So long story short: GO BUY JSAB ITS SO FUN AND ITS ONLY $20-
Spyro 3 is a big one for this too! If the game detected it was pirated, Zoe the fairy would appear in the first home world and tell you your game is pirated and to expect weird behaviour from thereon out. From there, portals and the hot air balloon etc. would not always take you to the correct level, you would randomly lose gems and/or eggs from your collection forcing you to backtrack to previous levels to collect them again, and best of all, if you persevered through all of this and made it to the final boss battle, the game would suddenly warp you back to the first level with 0% progress. Genius.
I’ve heard that Spyro: Year of the Dragon has an amazing one. I can’t remember who it was, but somebody uploaded a video of them trying to beat the pirated version a while back. The game plays normally, but it keeps deleting treasure and eggs, forcing you to go back and get them over and over again to have enough to reach the Sorceress, and when you finally get enough to enter her portal after going backwards and forwards so many times, the game resets itself entirely, transporting you back to the first world and deleting everything you’ve earned. Making you go through all that trouble and then deleting it was the best thing I’d ever heard.
@@seantaggart7382 well I when I get my edm soundtracks out after I get my skill developed and the equipment, software I need for producing music im going to try to develop my own DRM protection techniques and share it with my friend that's developing a game company and he might share those techniques that I myself developed

I think the cruellest anti-piracy punishments are definitely the ones that let you play through the whole game, then it crashes and deletes your save at the last boss. I’m looking at you, Earthbound and Spyro!
Gutted you didn't put Game Dev Tycoon in there. The developers of the game put the pirated copy out themselves, and it let you play it until you were several hours deep, at which point your in-game game company that you have been working so hard on would start to lose money rapidly due to people "pirating your games". Of course, people then took to forums to complain that it wasn't fair about how hard the game was, exposing themselves as a greedy pirate, and ironically proving to themselves that they shouldn't pirate things. Absolute class.
No Game Dev Tycoon? That has one of the most meta piracy detection responses ever, where it plays like normal to a point, then you start getting alerts about your fictional games being pirated to the point of your company going bankrupt, leading to a game over.
Fun Fact? The developers themselves uploaded the pirated version. That feature was turned into an actual "Super-Hard" mode to which you can use DRM to counter the piracy, which causes "backlash" by the players in the in-game inbox.
i feel like a lot of indie devs dont include these kinds of messages anymore because, they grew up pirating games, like any kid whose parents wouldnt give them money to spend on videogames or the internet
There's this one brutal piracy policy I learned of recently: Professor Layton and the Last Specter. In the US and UK versions of the games, it will try to brick your DS, and if it fails it has a backup plan to loop the first puzzle upon completion. And trying to enter london life will try to brick your DS again. However, in the JP version, it will try to brick your DS two times in a row, and then will have a warning basically saying "this is a pirated version of the game. Your DS will now shut down." And the moment you click ok it tries to brick it again
@@BenightedAlizar i had actually been in a server that was chatting about this bit of overkill antipiracy-- by bricking, the op does in fact mean bricking the console, rather than a simple crash. it's an especially nasty code and it apparently also does something with the serial number on the DSi, which would be your identifier for online services on the DSi. if i recall correctly, it would either store it and/or attempt to send it to a now defunct IP, along with injecting code that bricked the system. quite nefarious for just a little bit of piracy, and exclusive to the Japanese version from what I've heard.
@@GamerErman2001 That's a crime. Media piracy is not a crime, even though companies try to label it as "stealing". You might receive a warning, which includes forcing you to pay money, but piracy itself is no criminal act. You don't get sued for it. Stuff like selling pirated copies or sharing them can be a crime though. However that doesn't mean that you should pirate and that also doesn't mean that you get away without having to pay money if you are pirating stuff.
Gta 4 has a good anti piracy too. Missions become impossible, you get permanent drunken effect and cars break down as soon as you enter them. Wouldve been cool if this got shown too in this video
One of the Spyro games had a layered system. If the game detected a bad copy, none of the collectables would appear. No gems or anything. Once that was patched by pirates, it broke something else in the game. Once that was patched, something else broke, and so on. By the time pirates had fixed everything, the game would have already made its money and the devs no longer cared. Then there was Game Developer Tycoon, which had a brilliant one: For every game you produce on a pirated copy, you'll be plagued with piracy! The more costly the game, the more it gets pirated, which means you can't make any money. It's hilarious to read game help forums where the pirates outed themselves by complaining that they can't make any money because of all the pirates! lol The irony was lost on them.
The best anti piracy... was in Game Dev Tycoon; at first it would play normally.. but then it gets harder to earn money.. because your games are being pirated and then the game gives you a warning about how you should pay for the game..
That just shapes and beats guy... so wholesome. I always end up buying games I've pirated as long as I enjoy them, basically if I do pirate a game, I'll end up buying a legit copy as soon as I've got the money for it, but if I don't enjoy the game it gets deleted and that's that, test run. Although I did have a pirated copy of DMC5 for like three weeks, but that's just cause I played it over and over like a zombie for a while, I paid for the real thing on steam since XD
One of the best anti-piracy measure ever in a game is Game Dev Tycoon's pirated ending, where part way through the game, your company goes bankrupt because of video game piracy.
@Michael Martinez The thing is, people who pirate the games most of the time wont buy the game to begin with, but if they find it good, they might buy it or tell people about the game, making it more spread to people who might buy it. the profit usually evens out or even turns out for the better, since those people wouldn't have bought the game anyway, I know it did happen to me, I pirated some games to see how they are, and I end up liking them and buying them.
@Michael Martinez Most people would just not buy it, your logic is just as flawed Of course I wont say to stop securising your games against piracy, because on top of protecting their work, which is totaly legitimate, i'm not saying otherwise and or saying they're losing profit there, it push people who wants the game but don't want to bother to buy it. If you just look at one side to argument that piracy is ruining video games, that's flawed, as flawed as if I was saying that every devs should send free copies and say to people to buy it if they want to support. It's like in everything, it's nor black or white, it's shade of grays, you may have heard that saying everywhere, but it stays true.
Everyone here is talking about Earthbound’s Anti-Piracy measure, but no one is talking about Undertale’s, where Flowey scowls you about you “Thinking you can get away with it”
Just Shapes And Beats have the most positive and wholesome anti-piracy measurement (instead of punishing the player, it gives them a good lecture about piracy and good things u can do for the game)
Yeah totally. If a little kid where to see it this would actually teach them something and encourage them not to do it again rather then just punish them. Best anti-piracy screen I’ve ever seen.
Earthbound has a really mean anti piracy check. Understandable since it was made by the same company that made kirbys dream course. The game will crash during the final boss after your journey of several hours and then when you try to load you game back up, your save file is deleted. Yeah, during the final boss. Brutal.
@@dred4dead551 I don't know, maybe I just have a good pirate, because it isn't locked on hard. Or maybe I'm just good enough not to notice ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ BTW, TIL that Zelda ALTTP on GBA has the same thing. Ganon is invincible during the final battle. Learned the hard way.
I think its clever when the anti piracy is masked as a bug or a glitch so that the person who stole the game asks for help without knowing they're ratting themselves out
Video Game Dev Tycoon has a pretty good anti-piracy measure. As you make games in it, you won't make money since you're getting notified that people are pirating your games instead of purchasing it. A taste of your own medicine!
That last one was so wholesome, tho. Just like "I know you're probably not a bad person, but I still can't let you play a stolen version of my game for free. Tell you what though- come be a part of the game in other ways. You can still be a part of the experience."
The last one shown was pretty heartwarming. He wasn’t mad at us about pirating the game because he has done it before, and tells us that we should support the game another way if we can’t afford it. This is something really only indie gamers do, and I’m proud of them for doing that. Anti piracy screens or easter eggs don’t have to be scary, you just gotta them know they pirated the game.
Maybe not the same, but Game Dev Tycoon intentionally released their game on PirateBay but edited so that sales are massive reduced by piracy to the point where it is almost impossible to play.
Plus, legit players can enable Pirate Mode WITHOUT commiting a cybercrime as a form of hard mode, with a DRM mechanic added in to the legit version's pirate mode.
The best part about a pirated copy of the game is all the pirates running to the online forums to find a solution to this "glitch" because some people really _are_ that stupid.
Ya, my favorite example, especially that the news reports of people complaining about the in-game piracy is how I learned of the game. Their sales exploded because of that.
One of my favorite anti-piracy measures is in Game Dev Tycoon The creator of the game literally released a pirated version of his own game, the day after the legit game launched, and uploaded it to as many torrents site as he could The game would play normally for a while, until suddenly you would start getting messages that your games are being pirated, and your profits are dropping It starts off slow, but progressively gets worse, until it becomes impossible to make a profit and you lose There were actual forum posts about people asking if there were things like DRM or other anti-piracy measures that they could research, it was hilarious
Don’t forget how Earhbound boots up the difficulty by increasing the number of enemies so much your game is almost unplayable and will delete your save when you get to the final boss if you pirated it.
Spyro has a brutal anti copy measure... It gets worse and worse untill it's unplayable. Gems vanish. eggs vanish. Crashes. Health loss and it finally it wipes your progress clean! All over the course of hours ... At first sneaky and you might don't notice and suddenly you get punched into the guts until you can't get up anymore. lol. Brilliant.
"Shameles plug, but hey, you're playing illegally! Let's call it quits." also like the little "This is because our antipiracy triggers got set off? Bought the game legit? Let us know so we can fix it." because it acknowledges what might happen sometimes
This makes me think of an equally important thing to cover. Times when game anti-piracy measures made the game unusable for people who paid for their games.
BioShock had it so that you get to play about half the game, but then you enter an elevator at some point in the game and the elevator ride never ends.
that last one was really cool Awesome to see the devs admitting that they were just as bad as us, and even parodying the end of the iconic "You wouldn't steal a car" ad.
On pirated copies of Game Dev Tychoon (I think is the name) lets you play the game about halfway through, with notices that people are pirating your game. Then, halfway through, you go bankrupt because people aren't buying legit copies of your in-game games.
Pirating new games is illegal and bad, but retro? If I can't buy it officially, then what's wrong with that? At least where I live, copyrights expire after 25 years. That means, games as new as most SNES games can be pirated in full compliance with the law.
copyright protection in the US expires 70 years after the original author dies, however, thanks to Disney. so if you want to legally pirate U.S. english copy of the game, you'll probably have to wait until video games as a medium cease to exist.
@@westhescrub Well, it doesn't matter. For me, the copyright is gone. By my law, I'm not committing any crime, and the US cannot prosecute for crimes committed outside of its territory.
If I was a game dev, I’d probably make a “Did you pirate this game? with a yes or no question. If they said no, the game would crash, if they said yes, I’d make a short message about not pirating, allowing them to play for at least 30 minutes.
What I would do is have a password screen with a note saying to write an essay of at least 1000 words on why piracy is bad and send it to a given email address, at which time you would be given a password to allow you to continue
@@randomuser1065 Hey I mean if they speedrun it that quickly, they could probably get together enough money to buy the damn game if they just put that much effort into legal stuff
That last one is the best kind of "anti-piracy" (if it then lets you play the game. I love how "No time to explain" has a pirate version where the game has the player wearing a pirate hat....
If I was a developer I would create a super scary boss that only appears when you get a pirated copy, and if you beat it you would be able to play the game (It would be nearly impossible)
Other companies’ anti piracy: *Trying to make the game creepier and more frustrating as you play* Just Shapes and Beats: *-Oh you pirated it. Well whatever have fun i guess*
Imagine if there was a really cute game that had absolutely no disturbing things in it. Just family friendly fun. If you bought the game of course. If you pirated the game however everything would seem normal for a while... Then everything becomes horrifying. Jumpscares, game suddenly crashing, all that good stuff
I think that last video was the best, He understands not everyone can buy games due to poverty or them not being available in their country, Rather than punish them by treating them to a crappy glitch he instead takes a understanding approach and invites them to talk directly to the developers and encourages them to spread the word of his game.
I remember playing Spirit Tracks as a kid and not being able to progress during the first train part, so I must have had a pirated copy given to me back then.
Ya. Looking back now with this knowledge. I’m wondering if I owned pirated versions of games without knowing. I would often get random games I never asked for and would be unable to get past certain parts. I just blamed it on me being a terrible gamer. (Which may still be the case,) but you never know.
@@Wolfie54545 back then I just thought it was the game being dumb, but now I'm certain I was hit with anti-piracy without knowing because the exact thing from this video happened to me before.
I remember when sims 4 just launched, people complained about the pixelated censor covering their entire screen whenever their sim got naked, instead of the bar just covering the sims' bodies, turns out that was the game's anti piracy strategy lmao
the last one is actually good. if i were a game dev i would make a anti piracy screen like this. it wouldnt give the player a panic attack. or anything else. instead it would calm the player, other popup ones can trigger some people. like anxiety. it depends, and if it was a child pirating games it would scare them. other than that. that was creative of those devs and it was more chill
I would much rather calmly tell someone that piracy is illegal and inform them that what they did was wrong, as opposed to fuck with them for hours on end before hitting them with a jump scare. I think if you do this in a more chill way, it'll get people to want to buy the game. If you scare them, you'll prevent them from getting illegal copies, but you'll also probably scare the customer away for a long time, or possibly forever.
@@nh8489 thats the thing. They aren't the customer. You seem to think pirates care about supporting. They know what they are doing. Pirates arent little kids that dont know what they are doing. Most are teens/young adults that actively look for ways to illegaly purchase games. They are not going to buy your product. And kindly asking them to is going to help. They will simply find another way to pirate your game. Instead fucking with them making them frustrated is the key. Also when you calmly explain it to them i hope you would atleast prevent them from playing the game
Well, true, but you also don't know if it's a kid behind the screen. If it is, not only could you scar them with a jump scare or scary imagery, but you could also put a deep seeded dislike for the franchise in them. Like for instance, if Nintendo put a terrifying antipiracy measure in a Mario game, and a 5 y/o plays it and gets scarred for life. Not only will you be fucking with someone's brain (which even though piracy is a serious crime, I don't think giving someone immense paranoia is a reasonable punishment), you will make them hate the series forever, because they'll look back to the time where they played that game and the devs terrified them with disturbing jumpscares.
@@nh8489 that is true. Thats why i favor a method where if the software detects priacy a warning should pop up warning the player to imediatley delete the game and not to attempt to launch/play it. That would gets kids to put it away. And its better then letting the pirate play the entire game already getting what they wanted from it then at then you say "hey man that wasnt cool"
A bit disappointed that Game Dev Tycoon didn't make the list. The devs actually put up the "pirated" copy themselves and if you try to play it your games will just be pirated like crazy so it's impossible to make money. Seeing people on forums asking how to research DRM to deal with the pirates was priceless.
Earthbound's Anti-Piracy: ok so imagine Kirby's Dream Course's anti-piracy, but on steroids. After you've passed all the previous checks but the game still detects it is being pirated, then while you can still play the game, it is _insultingly_ hard. You can even get to the final boss, but when you do...that's when the game-erasing crash hits.
Spyro 3 did the same thing only an NPC actually warns you that you're playing a pirated version. The game can still be played but some of the collectibles will randomly disappear and progress can be halted at some points. But if you managed to get to the final boss you'll get kicked back to the start at 0% before you even land a hit.
Spyro 3 Year of the Dragon anti-piracy: ok so uh, do you know Earthbound? Yeah lets make an anti-piracy that warns you at first, makes the game hard as f*ck and deletes random things, oh and yeah lets make the game change language randomly (UK version) (german penguin intensifies)
That's a really amazing dev for him letting you play Just Shapes and Beats pirated, and if you end up pirating it, (which you shouldn't anyway) then I agree with what he said to do. Timestamp: 12:00
Trydodis Isn’t that what game demos are? Usually their the first level or section of the game so you can get to experience a bit of it for free that way.
Eric Whitney Indie games don’t often do demos and sometimes it’s only after completing the game you feel compelled to buy it. I few examples I can think right off the top of my head is Katana Zero, Va-11 Hall-A and Stardew Valley. They are all great games and I felt especially bad when I learnt that games like that are generally made by only a few people or even at times a single person.
Trydodis True, but indie games are also usually so short there’s no way to really make a demo unless they’re going to enforce a time limit. What annoys me are that they’re so short, I find it hard to spend like $30 on a game that’s only a few hours long. I don’t even like spending that much at the theater.
Okay that last example is just truly emotive. Like, he know it would happen and instead of block the game, encourages you to support it with words even! That man is great.
When I was 9 I was actually given a pirated version of Spirit Tracks. And hes right, I was stuck at the beginning and wondered why I couldnt progress. I didn't even know piracy was a thing at the time.
The issue that I see with the method of putting a word in the manual is if you buy the game second hand and it's a legitimate copy that didn't come with a manual you are pretty screwed.
Selling games second hand is still illegal and even more harmful to the developers than piracy, with piracy no money is spent, with second hand copies you're giving money to someone unrelated to the devs Either way the devs get nothing for their work
@@rompevuevitos222 at least the game got bought by someone in the first place when sold secondhand. Not debating legality here, since garage sales are a thing where second hand selling occurs all the time, just saying that its better and worse, for different reasons.

In short, i pirated enter the gungeon, installed a mod, and the mod did the anti-piracy thing. Long story: A few years ago i did just that, Pirate a game... Enter the gungeon. The original game works well pirated, but if you get mod the gungeon (aka allowing you to mod the game) that mod will kick your ass itself, and dump you into a secret place... without guns, and forcing you to fight 3 glitchy beholsters with about 3 jammed reaper thingies. Hard enough with the best weapons. If you die, or you live long enough, the game crashes, and opens a video. The video is the "you are a pirate" thing from lazytown. I laughed at it for a long while. I did buy the game legit though, but the memory of that glitchy beholster will stay with me. And it's nice to see that even modders can help fight piracy.

It actually made me feel bad for pirating the game, whereas glitch or stupid op enemy will only make me frustrated & motivated to crack it even more.
We’re not judging, just have fun!”
So long story short: GO BUY JSAB ITS SO FUN AND ITS ONLY $20-
Putting out a good word huh? Must’ve pirated the game
Genius.
They did em dirty lmfao
A game that never ends, actually sounds fun
That would be a great speedrun challenge.
There's an excellent Tech Rules video about it!

I know that these companies hate pirating but bricking your system is going too far!

One of the best anti-piracy measure ever in a game is Game Dev Tycoon's pirated ending, where part way through the game, your company goes bankrupt because of video game piracy.
That Won Dude lol that’s super clever!
Clever...except it just continues to perpetuate the lie that piracy harms sales, when studies show piracy is actually good for game sales.
@Michael Martinez Most people would just not buy it, your logic is just as flawed
Of course I wont say to stop securising your games against piracy, because on top of protecting their work, which is totaly legitimate, i'm not saying otherwise and or saying they're losing profit there, it push people who wants the game but don't want to bother to buy it.

I think its clever when the anti piracy is masked as a bug or a glitch so that the person who stole the game asks for help without knowing they're ratting themselves out
The last one is so wholesome...
The Game still lets you play it even with that message.
One of my favorite anti-piracy measures is in Game Dev Tycoon
The creator of the game literally released a pirated version of his own game, the day after the legit game launched, and uploaded it to as many torrents site as he could
The game would play normally for a while, until suddenly you would start getting messages that your games are being pirated, and your profits are dropping
It starts off slow, but progressively gets worse, until it becomes impossible to make a profit and you lose
There were actual forum posts about people asking if there were things like DRM or other anti-piracy measures that they could research, it was hilarious

Number 10 was like when a game has its own consciousness...
"Shameles plug, but hey, you're playing illegally! Let's call it quits."
also like the little "This is because our antipiracy triggers got set off? Bought the game legit? Let us know so we can fix it." because it acknowledges what might happen sometimes
This makes me think of an equally important thing to cover. Times when game anti-piracy measures made the game unusable for people who paid for their games.
BioShock had it so that you get to play about half the game, but then you enter an elevator at some point in the game and the elevator ride never ends.
This I have to see!!
that last one was really cool
Awesome to see the devs admitting that they were just as bad as us, and even parodying the end of the iconic "You wouldn't steal a car" ad.
On pirated copies of Game Dev Tychoon (I think is the name) lets you play the game about halfway through, with notices that people are pirating your game. Then, halfway through, you go bankrupt because people aren't buying legit copies of your in-game games.
Pretty unrealistic when you think about it.
By my law, I'm not committing any crime, and the US cannot prosecute for crimes committed outside of its territory.

if i were a game dev i would make a anti piracy screen like this. it wouldnt give the player a panic attack. or anything else. instead it would calm the player,
other popup ones can trigger some people. like anxiety. it depends, and if it was a child pirating games it would scare them.
other than that. that was creative of those devs and it was more chill
Nah scare them. They could be costing your company tens of thousands of dollars in lost sales.
After you've passed all the previous checks but the game still detects it is being pirated, then while you can still play the game, it is _insultingly_ hard. You can even get to the final boss, but when you do...that's when the game-erasing crash hits.

Or just let you play a very good first stage and tell you
"To enjoy the rest of the game, please purchase a real copy"
VenomRoy if you’ve ever pirated a game you would know that that basically never happens.

The issue that I see with the method of putting a word in the manual is if you buy the game second hand and it's a legitimate copy that didn't come with a manual you are pretty screwed.
Selling games second hand is still illegal and even more harmful to the developers than piracy, with piracy no money is spent, with second hand copies you're giving money to someone unrelated to the devs
Either way the devs get nothing for their work
@@rompevuevitos222 at least the game got bought by someone in the first place when sold secondhand. Not debating legality here, since garage sales are a thing where second hand selling occurs all the time, just saying that its better and worse, for different reasons.
The last dude made sense of it all.. I love that he admitted he was once a pirate and least if you going to be a pirate help them market the game to people who will buy it.. I'm going to buy that dude game for the hell of it cause he didn't come down hard on people like he should have.. I may never play the game either.. I just want to donate..
In short, i pirated enter the gungeon, installed a mod, and the mod did the anti-piracy thing.
Long story:
A few years ago i did just that, Pirate a game...
