East-West Line disruption: Assoc Prof Raymond Ong on the complexities of repairing track damage

- The Land Transport Authority and SMRT have found three damaged point machines -- devices that help trains switch onto different tracks smoothly. Several power cables and rail clips also took a hit. In total, 34 rail breaks have been found across 1.6 kilometres of tracks between Clementi and Dover stations on the East-West Line. These rail breaks pose safety risks if left unrepaired. Associate Professor Raymond Ong, deputy head of research and enterprise at the NUS Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, spoke about the complexities involved in repairing the damage.
Good engineers with problem solving skills are needed, not professors.
Professors do the talking, the engineers are hard at work on-site.
Can't even talk properly, too many Actually and Actually and Actually.
Exactly
cannot.. professors hand ons = make things worse
Assoc Prof Raymond ONG may have worked with train systems before moved on to teaching in NUS.
Why af ong english so poor? How to conduct lecture? Actually, Actually, Actually is a sign of poor english. Mr actually.
Lol instead of interviewing an engineer/technician who might have years of experience in maintaining and repairing trains & tracks, they consult a 'professional' who has never done any of these before.
Yeah, where is the Engineer on this case?
@@rayhsu3560 the engineers are actually doing the work my dude
typical of those they put in charge of all the govt agencies, a lot of qualifications but not a whole lot of experience
Technician, engineers would blurt out the truth which is 'politically damaging'. Did you not realised media like CNA is doing exactly that, protecting their pay masters?😆😆😆
count the number of ' actually ' by each of the two persons in tis and win a 🏆
Hallo Ah Ong
Still Yet to Use Skills Future to Improve your Communication skill ?
Actually I actually Don't actually know actually how actually he actually can actually give actually lecture actually to actually his actually students.

SAVAGE 🤭🤭
lol
Thes CEO was an ex-general in SAF and did a short stint at LTA before moving to Fairprice supply chain as CEO. Bet he never handled a torque wrench, a real huge one before in his life. What more about tedious track manual maintenance?😆😆😆😆🤣🤣🤣
Don't Wayang ! 😅 All these happened due to very poor Maintenance Programs and Management ! 😅
There are opposition parties that offer different visions for the country, leaders who are ready to step up and serve with integrity.
watch them raise the fares to compensate for this loss
Should have called up Bob the builder…
Talk so Much 🐔
BOTTOM Line POOR n INSUFFICIENT Maintenance, NO ?
They learning from Malaysia
how to maintain when the things had been used for 35 years? request decom and put out of operation, upper management also dont listen.
@@youcantseelim1751 they are using 35 year old train?
Perplexed that they brought in expert instead of actual smrt staff/engineers/ceo
Why is CNA interviewing an 'expert' who knows nothing about the severity of the damage? Shouldn't they interview someone from SMRT who knows the ground and cross examined by this 'expert' instead?
This is symptomatic of PAP's memorized model answers for 10 yr series scoreless who are unable to function outside of those parameters.
so... you would rather that the engineers take time off to be interviewed and answer questions instead of working on the problem?
@@ken61175who is asking for the engineers to be interviewed? Should a manager or the head of engineering be telling us what is actually going on?
WHY Every time will have some expert will "pop out" out to say something one huh?
State National Propaganda Channel to Create Smoke n Mirrors, No ?
❤❤ good points...👏👏
Maybe Best to find and interview with independent expert parties who did the actual site survey instead getting reports from others alone or invite consultants who done accessments for past accidents 😊 too..
Maintaining train operation is much tougher that airplanes..
too many parts, huge checklist, large passenger capacities at the same time it is critical/essential services to public keep the country to run efficiently 😢😢
Luckily no casualties unlike on 5 August 1993 which resulted in 156 injured commuters....
his replies are very high level, not enough details.
omg how can this happen in 2024 need iced milo dinosaur
You have LTA engineer to look before time
Who is this guy?
His name is Prof Actually Ong
Actually, Actually and Actually.
Some USELESS MUPPET with Poor COMMUNICATION Skill, Talking A Lot but Telling Nothing
SMRT run by ANOTHER USELESS Paper General, No ?
PAID 2M for SUCH SUB Standard Work Quality.
PLEASE RESIGN n RETURN your MILLION $$ Salary
Sound like you can do a better job, go be SMRT CEO. Make sure there is 100% uptime and rides are supposed to be free. Also since you will be a civil servant, you shouldnt be paid a single dime as you are serving the nation.
@@MyG-kc2idhe is a grumpy Malaysian
Don’t mind him
From management point of view, they should have already make the decision to pull that 35 year old train away from operation. So this is really management fault. If later news they going to blame this for improper maintenance and is engineer faults, then they really need to resign.
Please our country.
This my opinion.
Just small red.
I dun understand
Never check or service?
Professor is all Talk Only No Action. 😂😂 That's why they remain in school their whole life 😂. Talk talk talk mouth exercise.
Can't Even Talk Properly 🤦🤣🤣
This would not have happened if Lim Tean was PM.
"What's a professional worker mean?" Who is that. Why is there a big fault almost 2km? Why ?
Complexities of repairing? But take million dollars pay not complex
The train organization with so much resources still mess things up
If SMRT using OME parts instead of original parts , is not SMART after all
Now many people are late just because of East-West line messed up
The whole world now knows
Foreign Train Engineer: LaughDieMe😂
Has he used a screwdriver or a spanner before?
Hmm......does he know what is a screwdriver?😂😂😂😂😂
maybe he knows how to screw a driver and later tio blacklist by Grab
If so many rails breaks are found just a short 1 plus km of rail, how many more breaks can be found in the entire railway tracks in use?
You ppl better take the buses or phv, if you do not have your own transport.
Huh. U know engineers work in the middle of the night after train service for maintenance right? U think they all sleeping ar 🤦🏻♂️
Good speech.... NEXT!!!!
money know how to collect job don't know how to do.we also want.
The professor drives home after the interview.
How many times must he say actually?
this prof cannot talk fluently
Professor read from chat GPT?
Typical mentality.....its not a problem until it is a problem.."dont worry...nothing will happen".....when the problem does occur....then everyone starts scrambling/panciking....too little too late....and here we are raising fares again....when the company is making HUGE profits every year....not a couple of thousands or millions....but 10s of millions....go figure....
Channel News ASIA actually has not much Asian news. Unfortunately actually only got Singapore unfortunate kampung news.
How come such a big damage not detected before? No maintenance work, surprised it happens in Singapore
The auto translation from voice to text is terrible - absolutely terrible. The machine is adjusted to recognise Caucasian diction rather than Asian diction. Suggest like speeches be proof-read and corrected before posting on Internet.
A C T U A L L Y
This is serious matter. Faulty train undercarriage dislodge from the train that cause serious damage to the track. How LTA ensure this would not happen again.
Useless
lolzzz they hv hired an expert to 'explain' apparently its a 'rare incident'...what a poorly staged wayang, atleast hire one that can comms well...actually, actually, actually ah all due to poor maintenance😂😂😂😂😂

Frankly, I doubt so. Any leak takes years to fix in hdb wall. This crack can fix in 5 days 😂
many of the comments below reveal exactly why we need academics. as he indicates, this is far from being merely an engineering issue. it's an institutional, structural, logistical, political issue as much as an engineering one. listening a bit closer helps understand that. academics are trained to see connections and analyse complexity. not all do it well of course but good ones do - because chat chat, no action, is fundamentally important to overcome ignorance and short sightedness... just sayin'''
Review, the SOP,,,,Periodic maintenance and do Surprise/ Unannounced visits. Real Engineers, please give your feedback. CNA,, interview the right ppl. Not Ppl who only provide , theory ,Mumbo jumbo,,,omg.
who is this raymond ong ? is he a consultant to the lta or smrt for rails ? civil and enviromental engineering is this really suppose to give confidence lol
As if this prof has any actual hands-on experience on mrt track repairs… use mouth to talk only from his ivory tower…
13 September 2024,SMRT signed METRO ALLIANCE with 5 Taiwanese railway operators to improve mass transit railway's reliability, 25th September 2024,Boon Lay to Queenstown MRT service broke down? SMRT really got no future!
Why put rock pebbles on elevated track that defeat the purpose of drainage on ground-level tracks. Other countries like China, Taiwan and Japan do not have rocks on elevated tracks as vibrations can damage the tracks and cable ties. Means our engineers have no brains.
God bless PM Wong who took over at the wrong time. Hope the engineers with the help of experts solve the problems. Pse ensure safety is important. Do not rush. Do a good job. Majullah Singapura
His presentation skills need to improve. I cant hear clearly n understand very clearly what he was trying to convey. Can we get an engineer to speak?
woah that quite the damage, hopefully things resume asap. thank you for your hard work SMRT!
Wonder why no preventive process implemented? When a faulty train happens, it can be anything, but engineers should be deployed to do checks on the external of the MRT, a form of inspection that no parts is loosen etc. And then when the train is being rolled back, 2 engineers to be deployed behind the train to ensure track, 3rd track etc is not damaged as the faulty train moves off, at least for 500m if the distance is too long to follow all the way.
The MRT disruption on the East-West Line (EWL) on September 25th was caused by a faulty 35-years-old train that damaged the tracks near Clementi station. They should have removed part of the axle from the faulty train before dragging it back to maintenance depot. It is the axle that dropped and hit the 3rd rail which caused the electricity outage and also extensive breaks across the stretch of rail track while being dragged along. If portions of the faulty axle cannot be removed, specialized equipment such as using cranes or other heavy machinery to lift and move the train to their maintenance depot.
In short, the MRT maintenance crew lacked common sense because they ignored safety to humans and equipment in their SOP (standard operating procedures). On the whole, without this incident, our MRT system is fine and is one of the best in the world.
im surprised how much damage was seen on the tracks. theres so many fractures. im still confused as to what dropped and could caused fractures in so many areas. like the train broke down at clementi, but how did it affect the track all the way to buona vista? is it because the affected 3rd rail affects the entire stretch from jurong to buona vista? and only the fractured rails are contained on the rail along clementi?
The current focus of management on P&L, shareholder interest, and ROI often leads to a lack of attention towards maintenance, safety guidelines, and the potential for component failure. This approach may overlook the long-term consequences until a catastrophic system failure or a mass casualty event occurs. To address these challenges, one potential solution could involve transitioning from human-based maintenance decisions to an AI and rule-based autonomous platform directly linked to government systems. This system would autonomously impose fines on operators for non-compliance without negotiation, in cases where maintenance records and evidence of servicing are not present. Additionally, it would monitor employee working hours to ensure compliance with engineering standards and HR regulations, imposing fines for any breaches. While this solution offers a way forward, its successful implementation would require governmental consideration and action.
many folks now spk with alot of ' maybe' & ' actually' is tat Singlish ?
Don't forget the words ,like ,I mean, you know, these are poor english. One dj from local radio station like to say like, like, like.
Lol..over 3 decades of running mrt and still done know how to fix damaged track. Sleeping on job and lack of training. And yes, next time pls interview real hand on engineer. Not someone who probably never get his hand dirty like this so called AP. Look like he is repeating what smrt said and to cover up for smrt. Explained like a technician instead of AP. This is the problem when you only good on paper but know nothings on actual work done😅
please lah, even a technician is more useful and stronger than a AP.
Much like an abuser convincing their partner that they are incapable of surviving alone, the PAP perpetuates the myth that Singapore would crumble without its leadership, despite having a world-class civil service capable of running on its own.
breakdown in 3 consecutive shows SMRT is not SMART after all . Most of the old trains running along NS Lines with warm air coming out from the overhead ducts rather than cooling air in the passengers cabin as observed for a very long time and yet they are deployed , It shows they just don't the discomfort of the commuters . No money for maintenance ?
Breakdown as reported maybe due using cheap parts make from cheap materials instead of using genuine parts . Save cost to shows annual good profits .
The asset belongs to LTA not smrt. LTA is just an operator. FYI smrt was delisted around 7 years ago.
thanks for the info
PAP continues to undermine its “spouse’s” confidence, telling Singaporeans that they are nothing without the party-creating crises through policies and media control, all while using taxpayers’ money to maintain that grip.
and i honestly dislike comments that diss our system.. instead of being understanding we chose to be cynical with our remarks.
So obvious that many commenters here have never work in the service industry before. Expecting engineers to comment about the issue at hand when repair works are still ongoing? How will that help the problem? They rather be on-site solving the issues than to come on a media platform explaining the problems and potentially fuelling speculation from the public who have little to none knowledge about how the rail system work and giving stupid comments/answers to the problems. Why should put themselves into another problem when they are already in a precarious situation, the less talk now the better. The public only need to know what is happening at the site right now and the tentative time service will resume as already convey by SMRT CEO.
