Thank you for a wonderful review, extremely impressed with your attention to details.
This my grail pen! Thank you so much for this review! Years ago I had an “Estie” and it disappeared from my purse! I’m happy to see that the price hasn’t gone up much in 20 years!
Beautiful, naturally. Glad for your review. Definitely high end.. Sapphire and aqua marine. Wow. Your attention to detail is so satisfying to me. Thank you.
Another great review thank you. Perhaps someday a S.T. DuPont for me. I have held a few in stores and wow their lacquer techniques are unbeatable in my opinion. I love all three, but especially the Sapphire. You are right it resembles the MB Starwalker, though less bulbous in the cap., which I like. I have a Star Walker 1st version, my only MB. Like the design, I won it at a professional conference. For those memories of the conference and the folks that donated the pen for the Door Prize it will always be in my collection -and unused. Bad design execution, I have three destroyed shirts from when I was still working, with huge ink stains. Cap/ barrel threads kept separating when in shirt pocket during normal work day, only to to be discovered when suit coat removed after entire roller refill had wicked dry. Shame on MB, they need to change the Starwalker threads. This will never happen with the Dupont Line D snap cap or Dupont’s fit and finish. Great pen and great review thanks.
Fine review on the best fountain pens I know. They're up to Montblanc standard or even better!
I have zero interest in this style of pen, but I still really enjoyed your review and got a real sense of the excellent craftsmanship that is there to appreciate.
That's one of the fun things about this hobby...checking out things that you know that you don't have an interest in...but can still appreciate what went into making it.
Those finishes are awesome!
You do great reviews, applause for you. Are the nibs in fountain pens s.t. dupont are produced in house?
You mention the pleasing tactile experience of the grip. I am wondering if the guilloche finish offers a similar tactile sensation, or if the Urushi lacquer and polishing create a smooth surface? I ask because the lovely faint tactile sensation of my guilloche Aurora Black Mamba is one reason I love that pen so much ...
Thanks for yet another interesting, informative review!
The Urushi surface of the barrel is smooth.
I appreciate your thorough reviews and respect your opinion, but the price seems crazy high. I can't "'easily understand and justify the cost" of this cartridge/converter pen. Perhaps, I just don't understand the appeal of luxury pens.. Aesthetically speaking, it reminds me of a $15 Jinhao pen.
Totally agree. Some people seem to think others are impressed that they overspend on ordinary things.
@K.D.P. Ross Well duh. He was giving an opinion on the price point (which I agree with - this pen is NOT reasonably priced) and by definition he is part of the market. So at least part of the market feels the same.
The guilloche pattern makes it look like a luxury watch.
Thanks, David. That is a beautiful pen, eye candy indeed. Wondering what makes Urushi lacquer special relative to other type(s)? Like checking out a Jag or a yacht floating by; not for me but cool, nonetheless.
What makes Urushi lacquer special/desired is a rather lengthy subject. It is a natural element, collected from special trees, only grown in certain regions of the world. One tree can only produce about a cup of Urushi every 8 years.
It takes a LOT of work, and it's also much harder than other types of lacquer.
DuPont really makes a superior product. Love these pens and your review. I’ve had a large size DuPont Vertigo for 23 years and it’s still one of my favorite pens
Lovely pens, definitely on my wish list. The intro was beautifully done, I really enjoyed the transitions.
I love the sound of their lighter, so it woukd have been great if they matched that, but alas they didn't. Of course it would be hard without some spring steel reverberating after the cap snaps open, like it does in the lighter, and this would be tricky to incorporate in a pen design.
I knew this brand sounded familiar... I didn't connect it to my lighter 😄
Next pen
A very nice grail pen. Keep buying Tats tickets. One day sigh.
The material of the pen is brass!
Thanks.
ST Dupont definitely looks very special from I've seen of their wares. Definitely odd seeing a more "conventional" design from them.
It's nice seeing reviews of handmade and higher end pens, but I tend to focus on ink a bit more, even when on a pen/ink lock indefinitely.
Royal Rhubarb reminds me I might want a purple leaning red in the future.
I think it'd look nice if the engraving was maki-e, accentuating the scales

Wow cool
