In the early 80s I loved hearing the Black Knight's taunts. Thirty years later, in 2010, I finally was able to purchase my own. I've never grown tired of playing it or hearing the Black Knight's voice. Awesome machine.

Ahhh, to be all the way in the low light back arcade room of a Straw Hat Pizza. You know the kind with the arched red brick walls in the B-Day party room, that aroma of real pizzas, stale beer and cigarette smoke scented carpeting and the sound of pinball machines. I miss the 70s and 80s.

In the arcade of my hometown... this machine was down all the time... not ejecting... upper flippers stopped working... drop targets getting stuck. The owner replaced it with Pharaoh because of too many issues. Really liked this one too! Brings back so many memories.

I own a Black Knight and I love playing it. I first played one in 1980 at a Godfathers pizza here in Louisville Ky. It was so amazing to be able to play a pinball machine that talked. Great series Ronnie, From not working to working man great job, I am always impressed by your wiring schematic reading. I agree with your comment section at the end of you playing the Black Knight. Ronnie fixed my Gorgar with the speech problem and some switch issues and 70 percent of the comments were about the Backglass. Last time I checked you do not play on the backglass "come on people come on". Great job Ronnie on fixing the Black Knight, I am sure the customer will enjoy it for a long time.

Great video on repair and playing the machine.
Years ago when I was in college at upstate NY.
I got a job as a pinball machine mechanic for a small local business.
We got the contract to supply all the pinball fussball games and the old time cigarette machines.
Watching these videos bring back a lot of very fond memories.
Iwe had the Bally's and the Williams machines back then so they were all eletro-mechanal.
Learned a lot about wiring and rouble shooting which helped me out later in life.
Keep up the great videos and keeping the old machine's alive and well.

Love that machine! That and firepower! Both of those machines were harder to get multiball than newer machines. I can remember as a kid playing pac man when it was brand new. Black night was brand new too. You couldn't get near either machine . They were always occupied . I can just hear black night talking, along with firepower, and I think eight ball pinball would be saying "quit talking and start chalking". I miss my youth!!

My first time commenting. Subbed and belled today. Watched a dozen or so videos. It's fascinating and your troubleshooting skills are neat. I have zero electrical ability, but starting to learn at almost 50 years old. My only memory of pinball was a game in the campground we were staying at long ago. I used to sink every quarter I had in it, but I don't remember the name anymore. I ended up playing for over an hour on one quarter. Went so long I had to pee. When the score flipped over I kept going. And ultimately, wet myself standing there. I remember running to the camper as fast as the wind, as I didn't want anyone to know it was me that left the puddle. True story. Never forgot that. My favorite game was Galaga, and making the game stop dropping bombs and running the high score up and was godlike in the arcade. Ahh the good old days. Thanks for the videos. Maybe once show us a few soldering techniques. I'd just like to see "proper" soldering.

Great game! Loved watching the troubleshooting and repair work. I played this game at a bowling alley in the mid-80s and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. I sucked because I wasn't coordinated enough to use both sets of flippers at the time! I also didn't realize then how robotic the Black Knight's voice was at the time! I just thought that he was talking was cool as hell! Thanks for the videos, Ron!

I've used both the manual solder sucker and the automatic type de-soldering handset. I'm partial to the automatic handset which I've used for years. Yes, you have to clean out the built-up solder occasionally, but you have to do that with the manual ones too. The trick with the automatic style to keep them from clogging is to set the temp a bit higher than a soldering iron, but most importantly to run the vacuum for a few seconds 'after' you've pulled it away from the hole you just vacuumed. This gives it max air flow and allows the solder inside to fully get sucked out of the nozzle and barrel. Most people were never taught that they need to do this, and so they get frustrated with the constant clogging. When necessary, I also use a tool that has multiple diameter wires to ream out the nozzle when necessary (I know PACE sells one for their de-soldering handset, which is what I'm used to using). Hopefully these tips will help others from getting frustrated with their automatic handsets. When used correctly, a de-soldering handset can save you a lot of time and effort.

Joe; I wasn’t complaining, you mentioned one bulb being maybe the only one in the vid which I didn’t notice but noticed the other one when you were doing the test. That game always seemed to the one of the loudest in the arcades back then with the loud voice. It was the initial lure to get you started!! Not a transistor, a darlington transistor pair. Used a lot for high current driver circuits. Used to replace a lot of darlington pairs in dot matrix printers back in the day, as they were driving stepper motors and the solenoids for the printer head.
But i remember playing the black night pinball game back in the day. The music and sound effects set it apart from other pinball machines. Which was needed to compete with video games.
And the best desoldering equipment is what works for you. I have used so many over the years, and the low cost spring loaded suckers work great. That along with some solder wick and liquid flux will do almost all you need to desoldering.

I discovered it in the early 80s, when I was nearly 30, in Aberystwyth (Wales - so it might be the same machine!) Half way along the promenade was a tall building with a spire and in the half basement was an arcade. Black Night was at 4 o’clock in the hall, as I remember, and once played, never forgotten. The only other machine I ever got to know well enough to understand what was going on was at York University where I attended some music summer schools, but so pale in comparison I can’t remember it’s name.

i use the cheap solder sucker but i also use a silicone tube on it to prevent the tip from getting messed up and never had a problem with it as long as you clean out the silicone tube every 6-8 uses because it will plug up. but it's simple pull of the tube and roll in your fingers till the solder falls out the put back on.
