Like anything with life, the more complicated it is to learn, the more power it gives you. GIMP gives me the power to create Photoshop-grade images with $0 spent.
So true
I'm so glad I came across this tutorial. I was struggling with gimp but, watching your videos have helped me so much. I couldn't find my dockable tools for text. I was getting frustrated because I didnt know how to manipulate the text. After watching this video, I get it now.
Great Tutorial my version of Gimp is newer and they moved a few things but I was able to replay your excellent instructions back over several times and figured it out. Thank You. Murph
15:48 On the Move Tool options, check "Move the active layer" instead of "Pick a layer or guide", then you can move your text around by clicking anywhere in the canvas and dragging it, you don't need to click on one of the characters of the text to move it around.
Thanks for the tutorial. Unfortunately with GIMP you can't edit the text again once you've already changed it. I didn't want to lose all the text editing and do it all again just to change the text color.
Hi, new to GIMP. This is exactly my issue. Trying to make an XCF for people to just be able to edit text after the effects have been applied (e.g. rotation, perspective). Is there a clever way to do this like using hidden layers or something?
I appreciate the time you took to explain this tool in detail. Extremely useful!
Indeed
Thanks for the help. Gimp has to be one of the most unintuitive programs I've ever had to use, your video helped me navigate this madness.
What a very well-presented video. The speed was just right for packing so much in. knowing I can go back and too when I need.
Davis Media Design is the best teacher and designer with GIMP. Congratulations
This tutorial was so helpful! I was going to uninstall GIMP but this video changed my mind. Thank you, sir.
Great tutorial, very thorough. Thanks!
Outstanding video, thorough but simple. A very big help. Thanks!
Thanks for this video. It was taking a lot of time watching other videos and you made it so straightforward. Thank you again.
Just want to say Many thanks for your tutorials. I have been using Gimp and Darktable more often now.
My pleasure - I appreciate you checking out the tutorials and supporting the channel.
I swear to God, it took me a solid 15 minutes to figure out how to move text, pressed every possible key lolz and then it was ALT (=:
Thank you man.
You are not alone :(
😂
I literally still cannot figure it out! I am on a mac so maybe that's why?
One of the great things about GIMP is the move tools options box. When you select the move tool, its options in the option box show up. In the option, there is an item that says, "Tool Toogle". If you select "active layer" the text will move. If you select "pick layer or guide", then it will move the layer what ever you touch is one without switching to that layer! It's really sweet the way that works. So much of GIMP relies on the options box. Always keep it open and look in for tool options.
Same here BUT using a Mac it's the Option key
As always writing a comment to support the channel
So helpful man. Really really great stuff. :)
Great video! As usual i pause a lot, look around, then resume. I do this like every 10 seconds. lol. But know I know more terms and layers stuff and only need to do this with a brand new concept.
Great tutorial. I've been very frustrated with Gimp coming from Photoshop, but I'm sure I'll adjust.
I was looking for a stroke option and finally found it. Thanks heaps.
Okay. Gonna make some memes now. Thanks!
Asif Mojtoba Top Text Bottom Text?
I hope, 2 years after you made this comment, you are now meme lord.
Thank you! You are an excellent teacher.
Best tutorials on UA-cam🔥🔥🔥
Brilliant video - really clear and thorough. 5*
Marking things I need to comeback to:
- Outline/Stroke: 20:20
It's the only reason I'm here.
You are a hero, man you are the best
Love the video. Really useful, but small issue. On the current version of Gimp that I have, the option to "Fill Path" does not exist on the left toolbar as shown in this video at 23:18
Does anyone know what happened to this option?
Thanks man, stellar! 🙏
Great Tutorial, a massive help, Many Thanks!
I appreciate that! Thanks for checking it out.
it was a fantastic tutorial. thanks a lot
Great tutorial! Please create a tutorial demonstrating how to edit or remove text already embedded in background or photo. Thanks.
Thanks man!
Been having issues with having smooth and clear text. They look perfect in gimp but look grainy or rather dull pixelated when I save and display on Facebook. Any tips would help.
I had a problem with the inner font menu being inside of my text box getting in the way, and it seems to be locked in place, but on yours it is already perfectly placed at the top left corner Outside of the text box. How did you move that mini-menu?
Any chance you have a transcript of this class (and others)? I cant keep up or really see where you are clicking for the tools on my monitor. THANKS!!
Thank you very much
Hi there. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to make GIMP recognize the alternate (glyph) versions of a font I purchased. It works with DESIRE when I choose the specific one separated from the pro. But Baker Street alternates aren't being recognized.
Excellent - thanks I was wondering why I could not drop-shadow later on. Text layer had alraedy been converted to a regular layer.
This tutorial was great! One question, do you have a tutorial to make text taller?
Thank you good sir
I am learning a lot from this...Thank you for a good long video...does anyone know if Chivo Black font is already in Gimp?
Your tutorials are very thorough. I appreciate that. Thank you.
Thanks for noticing and for watching!
Hi. May I ask some question about how to change the fonts to graphic for printshop? Because I would like make sure that the printshop can open my artwork with complete fonts.
Thank you
Thanks for watching!
I have learnt GIMP by watching all your tutorials.. Thank you so much Davies..Need to know one thing on text formatting. Is it possible to double color the text (or more than..). means upper layer and lower layer into 2 different colors. Can we do this in GIMP. Again, thanks for your videos..
I’ve wrote the text but it did not appear in the picture. And there is a tall yellow line beside it not sure what to do help///???
Thank you this is one of the best tutorials I’ve seen
When you click, Use editor, you have to select all the text in the document first, before the size will respond. But without clicking Use editor, you can just click in the text box in the document, without having to select all the text and the size will change. If you try to change the size from the controls that are above the text box itself, that is in the document, it functions just like the Use editor feature, in that you have to select all the text first, to be to change the size from there.
Thanks.
Great tutorial Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Hi Davies, is it possible to have 2 kinds of alignment in the same textbox? For example, the 1st line aligns mid and the 2nd aligns left?
Unfortunately all the text in the text box will take on whatever alignment characteristics you set in the tool options. You can't currently have one line of text aligning one way and another line aligning another way.
@@DaviesMediaDesign Thanks for your reply!
I just added a bunch of text to this picture and every time I save it it saves it without the text what am I doing wrong
can you do for example black lines around each letter ??
Can't get Dynamic Text Box to stay, the second I try to type, it Reverts to Fixed. I change it back to Dynamic, and again right back to fixed no matter what. Any idea why? I have gone through preferences, then into ini files, registry settings, this is driving me nuts.
how do you put text over your layers my text is under my layers and i dont know how to fix it
I'm having some issues with the text tool. It won't let me write in white. When I select the white color it shows that white is selected, but the text is written in blue. Is there a way to fix this?
NO OUTLINE TOOL in the Text Tool. That is quite odd. It would have been easier to change the Thickness & Color of the Text Outline if they've included that feature in the Text Tool.
QUESTION: how do you put a shadow around the entire text (not just on the right and bottom portion of the text).
I have yet to install GIMP. Does GIMP have a Portable Version? If so, where can we download one? Thanks.
"THANK YOU" for the tutorial. Very comprehensive. Appreciate it very much.
I have only just got this software and I can't even get started lol.
I'm trying to make my own DIY photography signature for my photos, and I need white on black, but cant work out how to change the initial background to black from the default white when I start a new file.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Thats assuming it can be done in gimp, I have my signature text ready to go.
i did not know there was so much to the text tool
Simply another great tool found in GIMP!
Despite the length of this tutorial, it's an amazing one! Thanks.
WHERE IS THE 'DISCARD TEXT INFO' IN THE NEWEST GIMP? I CANNOT FIND IT ANYWHERE THANK YOU
Thanks for the tutorial, much appreciated. I was looking for 'how to edit text when opening an existing .psd file' (from Photoshop). I can't grab the actual letters but can move the line around. I'm ending up retyping lots of pages :( Didn't see it here, if anyone knows please school me.
Also, the word 'antialiasing' is pronounced 'anti A lee iss ing' it means that the edges are blended into the background. Aliasing is the stair stepping of pixels, ANTIaliasing is smoothing the stairsteps. This was a huge development in computer graphics back in the early 1980's.
What if I want to change the text size ...and that size is in point ...example 11.19 ?????
I can't see anything ..where we can add [ . (number)
Only full numbers
how do you open that tool box on the left to edit the font
How can I save the text in text box for future use?
I’m having a hard time moving the text when I have multiple layers Of pictures and backgrounds combined with text. Is there some kind of trick?
Not sure if you already figured this out but just in case you haven't, select "Move the Active Layer" when using Move Tool.
Always keep it open and look in for tool options.
thanks.. very thorough...will have to do the curves and effects again separately...
Back in 2.8 days I thought there was an inner shadow option (thought there was, maybe I am confusing programs). Not having any luck making inner shadows on text in 2.10. Any ideas?
GIMP never had that, Krita did (and still does). Layer filters most likely won't be ready until v3.2, and that's a few years into the future.
I guess I was doing it in Power Point or Inkscape.
GIMP did used to have the ability to create inner shadows - though I can't remember if it was built in or if it came as part of the Script-Fu download.
@@DaviesMediaDesign only as a 3rd party script, working destructively
@@DaviesMediaDesign I tried using the legacy drop shadow, but that won't work, so that is not how I was doing it. I am guessing I did them in a different program all together.
What is the URL of your web site please as I would like to view your tutorial on how to download and install more fonts.

what fonts u are use?
Haven't been here in a minute
Thanks for stopping by once again!
very long tutorial but good and very learning full u got all the things :D
How do I edit existing text that I import with a .jpg or .png file?
Did you figure it out?
Take a shot every time he says text.....you have died.
How do you get rid of the stupid popup text dialog that keeps getting in the way? I can't seem to drag it out of the way and can't close it.
I've learned a fair bit from you but it's so difficult to keep up. Everything happens so quickly... I've no idea how you created a layer from a text box at about 21.20.... Apart from the speed, it's very informative.
Please explain how text is created vertically as read from the right. Your tutorial stops short of that (shows read from the left).
Is seems impossible, HELP? ......and NO..... rotating after only make my text BLURRRRRRY.
Is there a special way to install gimp? Every time I install something does not work at all. I can open an image, and do a couple steps in editing it, but after that my tool box dies. Nothing in the tool box works. I've tried to follow step by step instructions and voila' nothing works every time. This next install will be about the 6th time I've tried. I always give up because it wastes my time. BUT now I need this editor for my business. I was using corel photo paint which is very easy. I'm using an I3 processor in windows 10 with 6gigs of ram. I tried on my I& a while ago and the same thing happened.
I'm a beginner and don't find the toolbox - have watched various videos, but they all assume this is clear. Is there a real beginner's video?
how do you stretch letters? like up and down
After you write your text you can use the Unified Transform Tool or Scale Tool to stretch the text out. It will convert the text layer to a normal layer, though, and you won't be able to edit the text after you perform the transformation.
now my test only types vertical and i dont know why and cant make it stop
How do I look for a specific font
The left text editor doesn't affect my text. I can only change the text when I select the letters and use the text editor that is above the text box.
Yeah GIMP’s text tool is kind of a disaster right now
@@DaviesMediaDesign As long ast isn't me! Also color is acting up now too. Not filling the correct color. Hoping a reboot helps haha.
How do we rotate the text?
Demonstrate the dynamic text box again. Please, please. Oh the box expands with each letter. You have to demonstrate again
Why does the text tool stay above the area you're texting in.. That really sucks if you cant remove that from following you around.. all the text tools are already to the left, why does it have to follow your text around.
Copyright Symbol. I tried typing Alt and 0169 for the Copyright Symbol in the text box but nothing. :) Help... Thanks....
How do you rotate your text so that it looks reversed i tried ysing the rotate tool but it won't let me
Try the flip tool.
GIMP 😎
Plz make a tutorial on making Calander using gimp
Why i dont have all that same options like you !? :c
How can i edit text that was already in the picture?
is there a way to get rid of this selection pattern (that selects each letter in the selection) for a more basic alternative ?
How do you interlock letters? Can it be done on gimp?
Nothing on outlines/borders ... I can't tutorials on how to create a box with your text (whatever you call that) yet...
I created text layers in Photoshop but when I open with gimp they're not text anymore. I no longer have Photoshop and I'm Sol
How do I resize the text? Doing the size doesn't work.
Edward did you make sure to highlight the text and then change the size?
This is the same as the Udemy course which I took, but there I found you move too fast and you dance around with the mouse you should make the mouse pointer more visible so we can see where you go with it.
But as I said you go so fast like a professional designing something we are just starting and try to get a handle on it and going so fast is hard to take it all in !
Thanks, You showed me a few things I was unaware of.
Glad to hear it. Thanks for watching.
Blessings. I very seldom leave bad reviews, in fact I don't recall the last time I did. But the Gimp Text Tool is the most complicated Text Tool I have ever worked with. I have worked with Photoshop, Photopea, Pixlr, Windows Paint, MS Word, and others, and their Text Tool is easy to use. But Gimp's Text Tool is far the worst. A Text Tool should be simple to use. If you have been able to mastered Gimp's Text Tool, I salute you.
I have lost count of how many times I have uninstalled Gimp due to this issue. But I always go back to Gimp because I have no money to pay for Photoshop. Honestly, I can't believe I'm writing this review, but I needed to let this frustration out, I don't want to have it in my heart.
May *Jesus Christ* bless y'all. :)
The text tool could use some work 🤣 not the easiest in the biz to use
How to work glyphs in Gimp?
