Thank you for this video Liz! I am a new grad Peds nurse on med surg, and I just finished my first week off orientation! You are so spot on with all of the information you shared. Definitely involving the parents (who want to be involved) and explaining what you are doing before doing it has helped me so much! Also, finding what the child/parents "most important thing" or fun facts about the patient help me connect better with my patients! Keep the Peds videos coming please! 🙏🙏🙏💞💞💞
I have an interview tomorrow for Pediatric hematology Oncology and I am so nervous!! I have never had a job in pediatrics before so I am praying it goes well!!!
I worked in hematology oncology... Girrl its the place to be. I loved it so much I honestly don't think I'll ever love another specialty as much as I love hematology oncology. I hope you get it! Kiddos are the best.
Hellooooo Nurse Liz! I found your channel not too long ago. I finally figured out my passion and I'm back in school taking pre reqs to apply for an accelerated BSN RN program after working for 10+ years in finance 🤔😊. I love the content of your videos and how you manage to juggle life!! I am married with two teenage daughters. I work full time and feel the pull everyday between studying and making time for family. Thanks for your insightful, informative and encouraging videos.
I wasn’t a child but a new born nurse saved my life. My kidneys were failing the er nurse couldn’t get an iv in me. Then a nurse from the infant I c u came down the hall. She asked if she could help me. God bless that woman she got that iv in one time. She really did save my life that night
Hi Nurse Liz! I'm a nursing student going into the first semester of my program in a week and a half and I am super excited. Your videos with study tips have been amazing! I'm a pediatric cancer survivor (ALL)- and the amazing interaction that I had with my nurses on the hem/onc floor is the main reason I'm going into nursing. Part of me really wants to go back and work on a hem/onc peds unit because I know exactly what it feels like to be a patient there, but there's also a part of me that is afraid to go back the same place. Over time, I think I've mostly remembered the good parts of my treatment, but the really terrible nights also have stuck with me. I don't think I'll really know if it is a good fit until I try it. Do you think clinicals will help me figure it out?
Clinical will likely help, but usually there arent too many clinicals in oncology just because of how specialized the population is. If you could get an externship or do your preceptorship there that would probably be really helpful. But either way I think you'll be AMAZING with your experiences in your background. I'm sorry you went through that, I cant even imagine, but what a phenomenal perspective you will have when caring for patients
Hey Liz! You are the eternal optimist, thank you for being so fun! I am a career switcher. I have been a kindergarten teacher for four years, and so when I am (finally) an RN, I would love to work in a pediatric setting. Do you think my kindergarten background help me if I go in the pediatric direction? You are literally the MOST helpful nurse resource on this platform (and super inspirational). Thank you again.
That would be such a helpful background! Communication is SUCH a huge element and I find that teachers are master communicators! especially with kids AND their parents.
You mentioned that your child was in the hospital at one point. When one of my kids was admitted to the same floor on which I worked, I liked it because I trusted everyone, but it was also difficult because everyone came in the room and assumed I knew everything about what was going on. To anyone caring for a patient whose parent is a a nurse, please don’t think we know everything. When your child is in the hospital, all you think about is your child. Everything else goes out the window. We take off the nurse hat and put on the parent hat. Unless the parent tells you they know and don’t need an explanation of what they are doing, assume they need that information.
just found your channel i love it!! i love your perspective on things and you seems very patient and calm!! definitely an inspiration getting through nursing school:)!
Hi Liz!! I just wanted to let you know I really appreciate your channel & this video specifically :):). I am starting nursing school in the fall and have plans to hopefully start off as a peds nurse and then become a NP in a family or peds clinic. I love all of your advice!!
I LOOOOOOOOVE pediatric nursing! I precepted on a pediatric GI/transplant floor and absolutely loved being able to take care of those kids. It was more of a chronic floor so I got to see some of the same kids over and over. I am a new grad nurse working in obstetrics now, but I might transition back into pediatrics after I get my bearings as a nurse because I miss those kiddos! A few people in my cohort accepted positions in pediatrics straight out of school so I agree that it depends on your region!
Thank you so much for your video! I am a soon to be cardiology peds(acute and icu) nurse and I feel a little intimated and scared😬😬😬😅 but I do like doing things that make me scared. One of the things that worries me the most though is knowing how to interact with the kids.
I definitely want to try out pediatrics as one of my specialties in the future! If I really like nursing and have alot of experience, I might go for Nurse practitioner too😊😮
Lol.. My own personal rant real quick. Worked at one of two Children's hospitals in my state, worked on hematology/oncology/bone marrow transplant. ADORED it. I was a CNA. I graduate, they had 3 positions, and still refused to give me (and another girl who had 5 years on the floor) a job. LOL. So even if you do work in peds you still can get screwed. I worked nights during nursing school for literally nothing and IM SO SALTY OK RANT OVER but I loved the video!! Makes me miss peds already. Hope to go back some day.. Out of state far away from my hospital that treats their employees like garbage lol.
I suppose you could. But it may be uncomfortable for both you and the patient if you were to wear one all the time. However thats what we are doing right now anyways with covid so I'm not sure how things will be in the future.
Hey liz! what do you think is the best and most practical way to keep your home free of hospital cooties? changing clothes in the hospital before you leave so they don't get in your car? or just changing and showering when you're home? What are your thoughts?
I would usually leave my shoes in the garage since those were the grossest (i usually wiped them with sani wipes on the really gross days), then I just changed right away when I got home and usually showered before crashing into bed. But thats about it!
I am new to the nursing career. Definitely need help I am looking into Labor and delivery or pediatric. I just got accepted into Notre Dame ABSN. Do you have video on this program. My passion i children and babies.
I’m 41 nursing is my dream ! It always has been ... I am trying to decide if this is still something that I believe I’ll be really good at ! Any tips , advice?
I graduate nursing school in a couple days and am extremely interested in peds. Would you say that it is difficult for a new grad to go right from school to a peds unit? All of the hospital in my area seem to require experience on their pediatric units except for a periop fellowship that I saw at a children's hospital.
Depends on where you live! You can definitely get a peds job straight of of school! It can be more challenging in some areas vs others but many people I worked with were able to land the job as their first!
Hi I’m hoping to become an LPN. Just to give nursing a shot. However I only desire to work with kids “peds”. My question to you would be as an LPN can I get hired at a pediatric hospital/ pediatric doctors office. Can LPN’s give shots/ draw blood?
Hey Liz ! Completely off topic from the subject of this video but I’m just getting out of high school and I’m really skeptical about the nurse to NP career and I have so many questions is there anyway I can contact you directly or can I just ask my questions here in the comment section
It depends on where you are a nurse. Some places don't allow people to stay on as nurses after they are licensed as NP's because they can technically be held to a higher responsibility level in the event of a lawsuit. But some places are cool with it! There were a few nurses on my floor that worked per diem with their NP jobs. But they all quit their per diem nursing jobs within the year because it just wasn't worth it to them.
"Would you rather clean poop off of somebody who's 500lbs or 15lbs? Easy." I'm dead lol
Hi! New peds nurse going into my second day of work 😁
Hope it goes well!!
How is it going? I have an interview next week for a pediatric unit.
How is it going?!
@Teresa Prado How is it now as a peds nurse?
i’ve been really confused on if i wanted to be a pediatric nurse or not, but then i remembered: cute children
Nurse at the #2 peds hospital in the nation. ❤️🥰 this video is spot on. Love my kids!
Don’t forget home health peds!
Ohhh yes home health!

Congrats on your new job!! getting into OB is no small feat!
I'm a peds nurse. Toddlers: so much screaming!!!
So. Much. Screaming haha
love this! It is very benifical for deciding what you want to specialize in!
Yay! I'm so glad!
Thank you for your tips. I have a pediatric job interview next week, so this will definitely help!
Hope your interview goes well!

Omg No!!! that totally sucks I'm sorry! Hope you can get back with the littles one day soon
@@NurseLiz Yeah it stung thats for sure ! :( I hope so too!! I will miss it so much! Thanks for listening to me saltily rant real quick! Lmao.
Love it Liz! Thanks for this.
Glad you liked it :) Thanks for watching!
Why would anyone dislike this video?
How do you minimize your risk of getting sick around all the children? Can you wear a mask?
I suppose you could. But it may be uncomfortable for both you and the patient if you were to wear one all the time. However thats what we are doing right now anyways with covid so I'm not sure how things will be in the future.
@@NurseLiz methods for getting over fear of getting sick or how to stay healthy in a hospital environment?
Hey Liz, I don’t know if you touched on this in your video or not but, is it possible for a new grad nurse to land a job in peds?
Talked about that in there!
I started in peds straight out of school and that’s the only area I’ve worked!
yes its possible
about to binge even though I'm still in high school! any tips for volunteering with kids at a hospital?
Ask the nurses and cna’s what will be the most helpful for you to do!

Hey! Instagram is the best way @im.nurse.liz
And the parents with mental issues were the worst of all. But I loved working with families, and love all children
That was definitely challenging. Those kids were lucky to have you!
Most medical professionals work multiple jobs can you work as a rn and nurse practitioner at the same time?
