Charger lower ball joint is worst thing I've ever done. I wish I had found your video before doing mine. Most videos show it as a simple 30 second job but I had problems like you had - the ball joint press tool broke rather than removed it. I spent at least 6 hours hitting mine with various hammers. I never thought to lay one hammer down lined up and hit that hammer... I probably would have saved 5+ hours. And yes, before anyone asks I sprayed it so many times with penetrating oil and heated it up and no I didn't have visible rust or other problems. The things just didn't want to come out!
That torch you used did jack...I had to get a turbo torch and heat it up red hot. What a royal pain in the ass! While hot the new part drops in but don't do it. You will fry the new one from the heat. I let the cast cool off and used the press to press the new one in. This has had to be the most difficult part I ever replaced on any car! PIA!
Hey guys I have a 06 300, i did the hole passenger side suspension ball join. tie rod control arm, everything. I was told that is not a good idea if you torch the ball join to get it out, because there a possibility that the hole can expand. And you don't want that to happen. And the ball join compresser kit did not work for me, to get it out either
This is a DDIY video, and I guess you figured the boot out if you decided to grease it?? Future reference "never" heat it or freeze it, just press it period..
if i may add ..on the protector plate ..remove the screws and put a washer in between..these plates have a habit of rusting out at the screws and then make all kinds of noise..like pots and pans.
8:35 🤔 not sure that’s quite how you do it .. it works but.. there’s a risk of damaging the boot and shaft . Should be a tube that matched the ball joint perfect . Use that and a short cup to push it in .. cup is like an inch thick , just enough clearance to push the ball joint in
What was the problem/noise you were having? My charger has been knocking for almost 2 years. It's been to dodge 3 times and they can't find the issue. All they can do is "throw money/new parts" at it and doing that is not covered under the warranty.
Yea not sure this is a very good idea ....There is a reason hydraulic presses are made...Press it out in easy min with a 20 ton press...Hammering and heating is never a good idea....most shops would charge ya 10-20 to press them in/out.....You also heated it up and put a froze ballpoint in...never a good idea to freeze parts like ballpoints...Voids warranty and causes failures...not to mention lucky something didn't chatter in your face...For all this work , could have saved yourself headache just doing it the right way..
Just give me a brake! Not a good idea to freeze a ball joint? How about those guys in Alaska? Should they also avoid getting out on the road, when it is below zero?
You can also buy a tool online to remove and press OUT the lower ball joint from the knuckle (Miller Kit 9320 ) but it is expensive about $180. My method of removing is much harder but is was cheaper.
except.... the charger/magnum/chrysler 300's have the ball joint flush with the knuckle on the outer diameter.. how do you get a mandrel/pipe to set on anything to push on? I have an excellent ball joint press,, and a 20 ton shop press,,, but the way it's shaped--they won't work?
The screw type ball joint press do not have enough press power to remove old ball joints. They have enough to install new ones but not remove old ones.Need a 20 hydraulic press to remove them properly and safely.. Without having to hammer , drill and beat on it like all these videos seem to show... all the things the TOOL is made to KEEP you from having to DO....Using the wrong tool for the job...
I got it out with the ballpoint press. Had to angle it slightly off center maybe 5 degrees. Pain to get it started but once it goes, it happens fast and very easy.
dame that's crazy. I bought my from princess auto ( power fist is the brand). You can also hit the side of the knuckle where the ball joint goes throw.
I work on police fleet of chargers.. boss told me to change lower control arms with a pickle fork. several arms and 2 years later the ball joints are coming back to bite me in the ass. Do you have a link to that seperator???
Chris Harmon : Moogs ball joint k80996 has a new design a intra grated small boot already built in to the ball joint. There is no rubber boot that need to be install over the ball joint(old school boot). thanks any ways.
Guys, just take it too a press shop. I tried this and my ball joints didn't budge an inch. Not putting my man's video down, hey, I didn't want to spend the money to have em pressed out either, but after snapping a breaker bar...screw it, most shops gonna change anywhere from 75 to 200 depending on who your dealing with, they put mine in a 20 ton press and still had to use heat to force them out. Typically I'd say this is not a DIY part of the job..cheers
Nah, its just squished down due to how he installed it. If there was no boot you would be able to see the ball. There is also a ridge and lip you would see if there was no boot.
@@brianbrian3971 Go take a boot off one and you'll see what i mean. If the boot was off, you would see the lip for the boot seal. The seal is on this, just pressed down..
Uhm… you know you can separate the ball joint from the knuckle using the same tool u used for pressing the new one, right?

10 minutes
why not use the ball joint tool to remove it ?
As somebody below mentioned, a ball joint tool purchase/rental would be the better way to go. While your method works, it is also time consuming.
Important note:
DO NOT HEAT THE BALL-JOINT, JUST THE KNUCKLE
You definitely got the job done but a ball joint press tool at Harbor freight is a lot cheaper than torching your suspension good job though
You can press out the ball joint as fast and as easy as you pressed one in
Lol, I was wondering why he was pounding on it when he had a press 😅😅😅
I rather press it out an use impact quick clean easy
I used a snap on bjp1 press and gave the knuckle a Sligh tap and it came right out took 45 minutes total and out the door

One snafu, you didn't put the rubber cover back on the ball joint. Probably figured it out after you got everything back together. At Least I hope.

If you ever do run in to this problem, you can just weld the ball joint on .lol
joecc joeccc good thing I'm a welder 😂 fuck this tho. I'm getting my shot done by people who do it everyday

It doesn’t work if you just press it ive done it. Sometimes you have to heat it.

What BJ pn nbr is it nd is it fit for SRT8 chargers 2014? Ty

Most likely the front or rear lower control arms. The rubber crumbles. Or shocks, one of the three bolts on top were not tight enough.

WELL THANK YA
Off course u can freeze it ! Perfect idea! What about cold weathers.
I've been turning wrenches for over 20 years and NEVER had a ball joint come back or break because I put it in the freezer. You're clueless.
Wow that’s some crazy work to get a ball joint out. I got mine out using s ball peen hammer and a 5 lb hammer and knock it right out! 15mins
How'd you get the other ball joint loose behind the one you showed
I used the ball joint separator tool. Or you can hit the side of the knuckle where the ball joint goes throw.
joecc joeccc thanks I finally got it
You can also buy a tool online to remove and press OUT the lower ball joint from the knuckle (Miller Kit 9320 ) but it is expensive about $180. My method of removing is much harder but is was cheaper.
how could those small bolt hold up under pressure to push joint out, do you turn each bolt one at time.

Trevor Clapsadle that’s the same problem I am running into trying to push my ball joint out
What did you end up doing to press out the ball joint?
Man removes it without a ball joint press installed it with one I think he had a hard time getting her out and went and bought one or borrowed one
Why didn't u just use a ball joint press tool 😂
Steven Acklin there is not enough room to use a regular ball joint sleeve to press it out. U need a special adapter $$$$.

Was that ball joint sealed ?
what is the brand of your ball joint separator ?
I used one that I got at NAPA (broke 2 of them)
thank you
dame that's crazy. I bought my from princess auto ( power fist is the brand). You can also hit the side of the knuckle where the ball joint goes throw.
You sound exactly like Jonah hill hahah
Yeah he does! Think of a line from Super Bad that he could have used in this video. "Sit around all day drawing pictures of..."

@@joeautorepairauto210 thanks.. These joints on the charger seems to be the toughest to bust loose
@MOPARGuy was a mechanic.. A tech now. And can seperate any joint with a hammer in the right spot now
Dude, you didn't put the new Ball joint boot back on the replacement joint.
Chris Harmon : Moogs ball joint k80996 has a new design a intra grated small boot already built in to the ball joint. There is no rubber boot that need to be install over the ball joint(old school boot). thanks any ways.
Put the control arm against something while hammering. Your loosing all your power with it sliding on the ground like that. Just my 2 cents.

ritamo68 I tried what this guy did and mines only moved about 3 to 4 millimeters and won’t buldge anymore
what press kit was used to install new ball joint?
a stander ball joint press kit will work. Canadian tire / parts source rents them out for free.
There's no boot on the ball joint.
You forgot to put the grease boot back on before you put it back on the car .....
The new ball joint does not have a dust boot
That won't last also easier if you remove the upper ball joint first
U need replace ur upper control arm too
LMAO he forgot to put a boot on the ball joint wow...
The boot was on it. You would be able to see the ball if he didn't.
you forgot to say the ball joint can explode!
1012 he installs joint without boot
Nah, its just squished down due to how he installed it. If there was no boot you would be able to see the ball. There is also a ridge and lip you would see if there was no boot.
