  • Hello and welcome back to another lab vlog!
This week in the lab I have few ups and downs and show the realities of doing a lab-based PhD!
How did your week go? Let me know in the comments below!
See you all next time and thanks again for watching 😊

My name is Jessica and I’m a 3rd year PhD student at the University of Aberdeen studying a PhD in chemistry, specifically in the area of marine natural products. I started my UA-cam channel to document my PhD journey and to offer my advice to other students. Thanks for stopping by!

hi, sorry to hear that ur monday was not that smooth. I would just like to share some tips for your LCMS inconclusive datasets: 1- always make sure that u are using the right solvent(s) to dissolve ur analyte(s) of interest [consider the polarity] 2- check the suitability of the attached column to the LC part since some stationary phases might not fit with your cpds under investigation. 3-assuming u are dealing with unknowns, I would always recommend to record in both modes as there are some cpds prefer the negative ionization over the commonly used positive mode. 4- concentrate ur samples as much as u can and increase ur injection volumes from the LCMS vials inserts. 5- may be u need to check the MS parameters too since some cpds require a bit of tuning to be detected. 6- Checking the stability of ur cpds is an additional parameter should be regarded, and the utilized LC eluent as well. Hoping this can assist in partially solving ur MS detection issue... Best regards Hamada Saad and thanks for your videos.

Hi Hamada, thank you so much for your useful advice! I am working with unknowns, yes, so it can make everything quite tricky! We also have a standard method and column which we use for everyone’s samples as the LCMS is run as a service rather than everyone running their own samples so there are some limitations there also. Thanks again for your helpful info and thanks for watching! 😊

Hi i hope you doing great!
Recently i have done master of science in Organic chemistry with research & now i am planning to pursue PhD in organic chemistry in Canada university so what would you give me advice or suggestion about PhD?
    Thank you

Hello! Congrats on finishing your masters 😊 my main piece of advice would be to make sure you apply for a PhD which involves a research topic that you are really interested in/are passionate about. You do a PhD for many years so it helps to be researching something you’re interested in! Hope this helps!

@@SanaDomain I don’t know too much h about the system in Canada but have a look at Anniochan PhD Diaries on UA-cam for PhD in Canada related videos. In the U.K. you would be qualified for a PhD with a masters degree :)
