The cinematography of this video is absolutely brilliant. There's that pillar in the middle of the club that doesn't interfere with the shooting at all, they just pan across it. Marvelous new nostalgia!
Pro všechny nadsence do swingu, doporucuji shlednout predstaveni v Národním divadle V rytmu swingu busi srdce me. Rezie Ondrej Havelka. Hraji ZIVE Melody Makers.
What fantastic memories! I used to play this on the piano about 64 years ago. I love this great version and could hardly keep my feet still.......Bonnie Leeman
A song written in 1940 by Don Ray. Then in the army in WWII with the Andrews Sisters Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and next an excellent performance by Ondrej Havelka. Greetings from Poland.
Fantastic. Freddie Slack and Will Bradley would be proud. That piano player is solid! (Yeah, the blackface is an odd choice, but I'm sure he meant it as a sincere tribute to something I don't understand out of context.) Thoroughly dig this band!
The balck face reminds the revues - cabarets in first Czechoslovakian republic (The band is Czech). Musicians sometimes painted their faces to appear exotic, there were no Afro-Americans here those times.... and I think they just wanted to do the show. And of course great band with excelent sound.
You should watch the black and white minstrels. They were on every week in Britain from the fifties to the seventies or eighties when Big Brother took over and banned people from enjoying themselves.
You do realise that Andrew Havelka is on every single political show on CZTV 2? And I'm like wait a minute, this guy's not a polititian, he's only a musician. So why does he get on every single political show?
Ondřej Havelka patří do jiné doby. Chtě nechtě si každý tu prošlou dobu pod písničkou představuje a fandí písničce i době dávno minulé.Ondřeji, jste můj člověk. Možná se někdy na Červeném otoku sejdeme.
Naprosto dokonalé,stylové,vtipné !Taneční kreace páně Havelky mě vždy úvadějí v nadšení.Avšak co přátelé s tím nakrémovaným pianistou? Toho nám nyní v JŮESEJ nevezmou.
@@karel3183 A lynching in the background would have added another bit of 'historical accuracy' . Look it up. Any black person looking at this otherwise brilliant video, would be reminded of this history. If this video was meant to provide joy, it didn't work. Such a pity.
A great cover of a 1940’s classic but why is the pianist in black face - what’s the point? I got to believe that Czechs would know better, especially a jazz band.
I cannot get enough of this. I like the videos they made in black and white rather than the coloured ones. They evoke the period better. Does this group still exist?
I've watched this so many times and failed to give it a thumbs up, what a mistake. My favorite version of this Swing standard. Now please do In the Mood with the same kind of video!
People in the west have succumbed to stupid correctness. Be normal again. When a white man colored his face in black, it is an expression of homage to black artists. It means, "You're great and we want to be like you!"
Wunderbar-wonderfull Ich liebe dieses Video-I love this Video Superb Song, great Musicians, beautifull Girls and the fine b/w looking I looking it every day.
I really don't like how they give no credit to the original, and pretend this is their song. So I will do it. This song was done in 1940 by the Will Bradley Orchestra, and "Daddy" was the piano player Freddy Slack who was called Daddy Slack.
PLEASE, I was joking. My Grandparents were born 100-110 years ago in Belarus,Russia,Poland and here in Israel we have Jews from almost every nation on earth who all have had electricity for at least 120 years or much more. I might remove that comment.
My grade 5 English teacher used to say things like”Beat me daddy. 8 to the bar”. We never knew what it meant but we thought it was hilarious. One of the best Mr Ralph Fenn
So true, I hope I get to see them work in England somewhere or even better, work alongside them, as I am a '40's Style Swing singer & former dancer. Love the clothes they wear too & everything about them !
NOBODY, should be upset, with the blackface routine! I'm sure they didn't have a lot of Black piano players to choose from & like another poster has pointed out, it would have been just as authentic to have had a white, Freddy Slack character play, the part! If anything, it was meant to be a compliment! Drop the PC hypersensitivity, please.
BOMBASTIK
I would like to thank whoever made this for the tip of the hat,to the time when Americans were desperately cool.Great post!
He is a czech did also czech songs.
Cheered me up no end, this is awesome :-)
Song and video are both outstanding. Really great concept, too. The period costumes, dancing, setting all look completely authentic. Je super!
The cinematography of this video is absolutely brilliant. There's that pillar in the middle of the club that doesn't interfere with the shooting at all, they just pan across it. Marvelous new nostalgia!
This will never grow old. Absolute genius. And Ondrej and the Melody Makers they groove like nothing else.
Damn, no wonder there was Baby Boom during those days, this is HOT!

Don't stop! Keep on beating it eight to bar! Keep the Cats dancing!
I would love it if this was well viewed all over the world! They are great in so many ways.
This video is fantastic!
I like the way you think ! :-)
I love this version of "Beat Me, Daddy, Eight to the Bar"!
Me too ! This is one of my all time favorite videos here at YT ! Boogie at it's best !! :-)
Fantastic lighting in this b&w clip. There is an ominous quality to the characters here - almost a touch of David Lynch.
Absolutely marvelous!
Right on, Al !! :-)
Waaaay over the top awesome!
I have a notion to second that emotion !! :-)
It speaks volumes for how far we've come as a society when one considers the change in meaning the phrase "Beat me, Daddy" has undergone.
Goddamn true man
You were amazing yesterday night in Monlouis (Festival de jazz en Touraine) Thank You to all your band :)
This is the best ever!
Exactly the way I feel !! :-)

If Eleanor Powell and Benny Goodman had a child and decided to raise him in what is now the Czech republic this would be the guy
Fantastic video. The piano is most excellent. The BEST!
I Never grow weary of this masterpiece!

Fuck the but t hurts. I'm glad they blacked face...
That's actually historically accurate. Such things were done.
I don't understand your comment nor why it is historically accurate.

Dokonalost
Absolute BLAST!!
To mi vždycky zvedne náladu!
Best yet. Thanks for sharing.
Amen to that ! :-)
Great pics & gorgeous Boogie Woogie!
How right you are !! :-)
Naprosto super, a Ondřej Havelka mně tu úplně dostává.

I cannot get enough of this. I like the videos they made in black and white rather than the coloured ones. They evoke the period better. Does this group still exist?
Yes :)
This modern version is the closest I've ever seen to the original version.
You speak the truth, Kemo Sabe !! :-)
I've watched this so many times and failed to give it a thumbs up, what a mistake. My favorite version of this Swing standard. Now please do In the Mood with the same kind of video!
Ondrej never disappoints ! ❤️
Outstanding energy, choreography, and concept! When was this video made? I assume it was made in Prague.
Amazing the piano player is in "Black Face"
Dont take it as offence. Its pretty hard to get black guy here in Czech republic...
People in the west have succumbed to stupid correctness. Be normal again. When a white man colored his face in black, it is an expression of homage to black artists. It means, "You're great and we want to be like you!"
I really enjoyed this video. The dance moves and clothing are accurate. It’s a shame the piano player is in blackface.
Wunderbar-wonderfull
Ich liebe dieses Video-I love this Video
Superb Song, great Musicians, beautifull Girls and the fine b/w looking
I looking it every day.
stomping :-) I love the continuous piano line
I kinda know why, but I still don't understand. Would black people think they're being ridiculed, or what?
I really don't think a lot of blacks will be watching this one
skvělá verze, démonické prostřihy na kytaristu a bubeníka. Splendid version, diabolical performance of guitar player and drummer.
This video is priceless! The Zoltans are going to add this arrangement to our repertoire in 2010. Brilliant!
Nemá někdo tuto verzi klavírních not?
The piano player, you can't do that in the US without getting a protest march.
Super.
Krása! ♥ Lahoda pro mé uši! ♥
hmm that was different...
What's with the black piano player? Slack was an ofay!
I really don't like how they give no credit to the original, and pretend this is their song. So I will do it. This song was done in 1940 by the Will Bradley Orchestra, and "Daddy" was the piano player Freddy Slack who was called Daddy Slack.
great! anyway all his videos are gorgeous!
THE BOMB! Magnificent.
I could not agree more !! :-)
I love this. Please my friends, enjoy:)

thrummlet94, Really? I love those styles.Or do you mean the dancing? I'd be interested,to know what you think.
😊😊😊👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Yes the concept of being made to look ridiculous has made it that all ethnic humour is now pretty much off limits.
@duchessbidwell Just check them: melodymakers.cz
Sowhat, that's right, but as I see it those standards, were part of that cool,I/E they had some CLASS!
Excellent music!
But I laughed so hard at the pianist "supposed" to be a black man. Shoecream? Hahaha:)
A Little tip of the hat to the era when America was desperately cool!
Black face? careful on that one fella's! but still concept and filming A+ !

The black-painted guy on the piano looks strange to me, but great music anyway
užasný, mám vás ráda :)
Thank-you for that, I will check out the next Vintage Festival, there ! I would love to see them live.

jeeesh. I didnt know there were people still playing this.

Great take and superb video!

Kudos Ondrej!
Too cool for school.
You got that right !! :-)
I could watch and listen to this video all day. I love your accent!

I wish I could post this video to my Facebook//////
non ci sono parole!! A giugno tutti a Como!
