Despite being nearly 30 years old, this is one of the best videos of a cobble that I’ve ever found. Whoever shot it did a good job keeping steady and framing the action. I’m surprised how different the temperature ends up being between the top of the folds versus the interior-the yellow- and red-hot base of the pile versus the cooler and darker (but still no doubt hot enough to instantly ruin your life) exposed areas. Thanks for posting this!
Seen this happen many of times at the mill I work at! We don't run that kind product but we do beam, s beam, angle, off leg angle, channel, mc channel and flats. We have had very easy clean ups and we have been down for hrs as well! All depends on how much damage the cobble has done. It happens... unpredictable because after you set up the mill for a size change or a product change, you never know what the first bar you run is going to do
At newer hot wire rod mills such cobbles go into the safety enclosures to ensure nobody gets hurt. At older mills a lot of grief given by mangled-tangled thing.
Guess you could say that when it was coming down the line, it was...hot and heavy. Then it got all bent out of shape. It doesn't seem to take rejection well.
Bierrr this is in a Hot Mill which turns slabs / ingots into a coil. This is what happens when the strip doesn’t enter the coiler properly. When they re-thread he coil, it’s pulled into the coiler to make a coil.
In reinforced bar making there is thing called cobbling... it cuts the product.so it doesnt get tangled like that... i dunno if if coils can do the same
James Stapay>> This occurence really facinates me, can you go more in depth as to why this happens, and why stopping it instantly would be a bad thing?

Good job getting it into the coiler after the crash.Would have been a hell of a mess to clean up.
I don't have the words to describe steel mills. It's like absolute heavy, dirty industrial work.
that thing that pulled it apart is like "I havnt got fuken time for tangles come on "
Shows the strength of steel, that it holds together throughout this process.
That's true. The noise in person, when they coil this up is unbearable.

That was incredibly satisfying!
Is there only one speed for this machinery? And if the emergency stop takes that long to actually stop then it really isn’t an emergency stop at all.
I'd work on Blooming mill and other secondary mills, where the flattest thing was just a strip like a leaf spring type of thing.
... And now I'm craving viennetta.
That's exactly what I thought. Why did they never make an orange one?
Surprised that steel didn't rip apart, when unfolding..
that is some very thick, hard steel, the coolant takes the red hotness out of it but its still quite maluable for at least 5-10 hrs after this process
ah, the good ol' coiler cobble. seen it happen lots of time at Westen Port HSM
Yeah, pretty cool to see the mayhem in person.
So that’s how Cadbury make Flake chocolate bars😂😂😂❤❤❤👍👍🙏🙏🇬🇧🇬🇧
Nice-looking bit of abstract sculpture there.
Geez...would have to go reset about 20 table motors after one of these lol...good times
more like 50
Now I'm hungry for Fruit by the Foot...

I wanna see the coil that made...Prolly useless and bound for scrap...but still interesting.
Sent back to the arc furnace it came from, usually in the same plant.
friggin AWESOME!
Holy shit that was fast
new coiler will be here 2020.
Probably a laminated lead.. take more off Crop Shear..
Good enough for a GM hood.
What am i looking at?

Well, they can always sell it as a work of art i guess
No e-stop?
Have to wait for the tail end to clear the last finishing mill stand.Would make a mess and probable ruin the rolls if it were stopped in the mill.

When was this filmed?
1993
Interesting it doesn't snap at rolling
Jane!!! Stop this crazy thing!!!
That must be absolutely terrifying when that happens. I wonder how much damage is done to the rollers etc. when that happens?
And this is how corrugated laminations are made....
That's one spicy fruit roll up
Where was this?
At the time it was Dofasco in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
That’s fuckin awesome and a little scary.
is this all wasted material?
In a sense that they won't make money off it that day yes, but it can be melted and re-processed.
Not really, it is known as a DORT, meaning dead on runout table. It has been coiled up and usually sold as down grade material.
bonza167 Some car company will pick it up for a reduced price. I'm guessing GM or Mazda.
@@bonza167 exactly
The beautiful part is that you just melt it and run it through the machine again - I think
Not that simple, if they can they will roll it up and sell it as seconds. If not, it will go in the scrap box to be melted down one day....
thats one mess. That I hope to get over time for wow
Finisher coble
uHHH Shit? Whew!~
Roll it anyway.
Cobble
Hi brother how r u
