PHEASANT TAIL JIG

This week's fly features a famous nymph that is modified to evolve into a new technique known as Euro nymphing. This European method of fishing nymphs is a kin to the French, Spanish, Slovak, and Czeck styles of nymph fishing. The pattern deviates from the original traditional pattern by tying it on a jig-style hook, using a slotted tungsten bead, and adding a "hot spot" bright thread at just behind the bead.
Frank Sawyer invented the pheasant tail nymph in 1909 in England. The color is a perfect impression for the mayfly catagory called “baetis” in the small sizes (#18-16). It is one of the most common and oldest of the modern nymph patterns. It is also a great pattern for the Hendrickson hatch in size #12-14, the sulfur hatch in size #18 and the stenonemas in #12. We are tying a variation of the pattern on a jig hook for the Euro technique of nymphing and includes an orange collar that serves as an attractor.
