      I have to disagree. I wouldn't count him as one of the greatest long distance runners in history at all. His times were pretty average (poor even) throughout his career. He mostly won because of lack of tactical awareness in his rivals. They always let Mo Farah play his game of slow running and then getting outsprinted by him during the last lap.

    I’m no runner but the 10 and 5k are some of the most brutal track races one can ever see. Not only do you have to keep running, keep up with the front pack, keep your nerve, keep changing and updating your strategy while still focusing on the task, manage your emotions and your physical well being.......🤯...I’m glad to have lived during the time of the great Mo Farah 🔥🔥🔥.

    Haha, I have a copy of the 1997 English Schools Cross Country results too.
    Farah was ridiculously dominant in those days. All the people saying he surged late in his career are correct but the surprise for us who were in similar age groups to him at the time was not that he became world class but that it took him so long to become world class.

    Heres a theory and its just a theory but someone please give me a counter theory because I can't shake it.
    Mo went to train with Salazar who is known to have given Rupp testosterone since he was a teenager. In Moes film he tells a story about Salazar showing Mo how he lacked the power of runners at his level. In 2008 Mo was a good but certainly no world class athlete. He looked tired and defeated at the Olympics. Over the years he joined Salazar he gained all this power and he looks like an altogether more powerful well recovered athlete. Sure this could be all the facilities in Oregon but if Salazar solved Rupps lack of power with test and can mask it why wouldn't he do that with Mo. This doesn't prove anything but I believe the onus is now on Mo to clear his name not to insist on being assumed innocent especially with the issues with lieing about LCarnitine supplementation.
    This stuff matters because young athletes build their dreams on what these heroes achieve and if its not realistic and clean every generation will be presented with the same choices. Lose or dope.
    Im a huge fan of Mo and still believe he is a great athlete but my belief in top level middle distance running is sometimes challenged by what I see

      @andrewhelms1373 3 роки тому +13

      A counter: It is not known that Salazar gave Rupp test. It is known that Salazar was toeing the line between fair and cheating constantly. Rupp is one of the most tested runners ever, if he was on test he would've been popped.

    • @Dan-cz5sj
      @Dan-cz5sj 3 роки тому +1

      @@keegandutto6976 so we're saying new training methodology is responsible for the change from mediocre to world beater? Potentially...on a probabilistic level I consider it unlikely on its own from what I know and what I've seen.

    • @Dan-cz5sj
      @Dan-cz5sj 3 роки тому +7

      @@andrewhelms1373 There are a number of documentaries now showing how easy it is to mask test. Several members of Salazars camp have come out and said that Rupps testosterone supps were common knowledge in Oregon. I agree he has been walking that line but to me he seems to show a willingness to cross it quite often and when he has the connections and influence to really push that he will, in my view jeopardising the integrity of the sport.
      Lots of very general claims have been made for the rise of Mo but the biggest argument ive seen taking all this into account is to just look at pictures of him before and after Salazar compared to during. He looks so so fresh and strong in 2012. He wanted it so so bad. If Salazar made the argument he could get him there and it involved blurring the lines I just don't know that he would straight up refuse it in that situation in that moment with all the chips on the line, everything he's ever wanted.

    I have to disagree that the real race turning point for Mo Farah was not his defeat of Micah Kogo in 2010. Kogo gradually declined in relevance from late 2009 onward. Rather Farah's victory in Eugene in 2011, which had no equal among Farah's racing record up until that point.
    I hate to be *that* guy, but... how does one go from 6th-7th place in major championship races (not even making the Olympic final in between), or finishing in 55s of a mid-13min 5K/ 28+ min 10K, or 58s final lap of a 12:58, or coming 2nd to a guy (Dejene Gebremeskel) who lost a shoe early in the race... to becoming the most dominant track distance runner of the generation, at age 28? Just so you know, during the English school cross country champs, those two years Farah was in the junior boys category. This means he would have run a maximum of 4.5k and a minimum of 3.5k. I couldn’t find the exact distance for 1996 or 1997 but I know that the distances never exceed 4.5k. Furthermore the courses change from year to year. So the distance was under 4.5k, he likely ran different distances that year, and he ran on different courses. So don’t lose hope if you’re 14 and can’t run a 5k in 15:12, because I don’t think Farah did either.
    If anyone’s curious you can find the results at esaa.com > cross country > select a year > previous years, and that takes you to their old website with results prior to 2014 there.

      Nowadays junior boys hover around 4.1k, I just wasn’t sure if it was different in 1997.

      Matthew W i do 400 and 800 so I ended up down there when I was seeing which years girls were allowed to run 400 (because the lack of 400 competition is annoying), and also because I was interested in how the 800m competition evolved over time and the usual times run in heats so i could find out what my chances of making the final were

    • @user-zd1zl2bg2g

      Ella F I’m the same, I was studying all the past results for the xc to see where I’d place.
      I don’t know why girls are a year offset to the guys for sprints, if everyone is able to run the 800/1500, why not the 400?
      I hope you made the final, wether it was in the last few years or virtually this year.

    • @ellaf3877
      @ellaf3877 3 роки тому

      Matthew W thanks, I did make the final last year :) But not being able to properly race 400 annoys me. Had this year not been cancelled (I chose not to do the virtual one) I might have considered finally doing 400 next year, but now i only have two years left, I'll stick with the 800.

      @malehumanperson7901 3 роки тому

      Yeah, it's totally incomparable. Conditions can be completely different. And the distance isn't measured highly accurately either.

      To prove your point:
      In 2017 it was an undulating but not too muddy course in norwich, in 2018, it was in the middle of beast from the east in knee deep mud and steep hills in leeds (2019 was also leeds but not muddy) and in 2020 it was a flat, faster course in liverpool. I can at least vouch for 2017-18 and say that the courses change loads, I didn't do it in 19-20.

    Going to point out that you just can't compare British schools CC championship races from one year to the next, they will have been totally different courses and most likely different distances, in different conditions, so the 2+ minute improvement likely wasn't that. Especially as all the times were roughly that different, it just demonstrated they aren't comparable races at all. That being said, I recognise, infact ran against at least one of the names in that list - 3rd placed Murphy ( there was more than one brother and they were from our neighbouring rival school, so I can't be certain which was which). None of us could come that close to them, and Mo beat them aged just 14!! Most runners in that line-up would have been at least 2 years older than him I believe, but it does depend on the age group entered.
    Also yeah 15.42, not 15.12.
    Otherwise love Mo, such a huge inspiration. I was lucky enough to be in the stadium for his 2012 Olympic medals and will never forget it.

    He still won the race ,so I suppose it doesn't matter,but I think 🤔that school race sheet where his name and finishing time were faded looks more like a faded 4 than a 1 to me which would make his time ⏲️ 15.42 rather than 15.12,
    Like I said he still won , so happy days for that 👍, and actually if he won by less then, its even more impressive to see what he became, I think this is an even better note that even though he had God given talent, when he was younger he was still quite close to the others around him, so he REALISED HIMSELF, and I think as he grew that maybe it's his hard work and determination that gives him the edge on the competition, obviously fitness and preparation but knowing and working on all of his shortcomings and not leaving things to chance, over the years his dedication and meticulous prep work has translated itself transformed into performance and a glittering well deserved career that he has worked hard for(like a lot of other people who have natural talent and don't make what they could have , of it🤔? ) when they make people like him they are from a different of athletes like Michael Johnson, Chris Hoy, or Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps ,it's as if these people don't know how to lose,☝💯 especially when it counts,and ESPECIALLY in the big tournaments when there's gold on the line ,and Mo Farah is another one cut from that same cloth

    You’re a young unknown runner, running against the world record holder, and his time is over a minute faster than yours... That sounds like Billy Mills in the 1964 Olympic 10,000 meters, a race that many consider the greatest in Olympic history.
    Yes, Farrah is definitely a remarkable athlete. His double gold in the 5,000 and 10,000 at both the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, along with his 6 World Championship golds, place him up with the all time greats. I was just pointing out that your lead in to this story is one that repeats itself in track and field.

    XC times in Britain aren’t very good indicators of actual ability as the courses are often incredibly muddy and hill compared to in America. Most of the time he gained between those two years was likely primarily down to differences in course

      Random Guy yep, you can say that again! Definitely not a good indicator, for example at Loughborough (uk inter counties) this year in the 5.3k u17 girls race, people with 17 minute 5k times were running 20 minutes, I know people who were running 26+ minutes with 19-20minutes 5k times (I didn't run there, I still have ptsd from doing it as an u13.)
