Do you have any tips on telling apart Pinus rigida vs P. serotina? These species overlap in range farther north near the northern coastal plain of Virginia.
Great question! They are very difficult to tell apart, and in fact, earlier taxonomists listed them as subspecies. Pocosin pine (P. serotina) has stalked cones and the serotinous cones lack a sharp prickle. Pitch pine (P. rigida) cones are not serotinous, and they lack stalks. The range overlap is tiny; on BONAP I don't see overlap in VA or NC (no pitch pine on the coast) but there may be some on the Delmarva Peninsula. Habitat is the best separation between species--Pocosin pine favors wet organic soils (like pocosins) on the coastal Southeast; pitch pine favors dry ridges in the mountains, although it is also the primary species of the Pine Barrens in NJ and ranges up into Maine.
@@ncstatedendrology6721 Thanks! The trees I'm looking at in Caroline County VA are below the fall line, but have a mix of characteristics. The habitat is wet boggy ground and they have stalked cones (most of them closed) and epicormic branching. The cones, however, are sharply prickly and only pitch pine has been documented in the county previously. I stopped by the population today and collected another voucher and photo
