Xenonauts is back, and this time with some severe budget issues. This is an Insane Mode run, and as the title suggests, our foot troops will be limited to only receiving cold war era weapons. The production of laser, plasma and MAG ground weaponry is forbidden, and any that somehow get acquired must be sold immediately. While the air war will be unchanged, the battles on the ground will become increasingly strained, as the aliens advance their units, and our own offensive powers see precious little improvement.
Additionally, I shall be playing this save with fellow streamer Baron_Von_PWN. We shall hot-seat this game, passing command between ourselves between sessions, typically (but not necessarily) each in-game month. Your custom soldiers are in our capable hands.

UA-cam recommended him to me with his cannibal frostpunk run. I quickly realized that attachment isn’t a feeling he experiences to digital characters.

This is a remarkably interesting game to watch, considering how far it falls outside my usual genres. The addition of viewer characters does a lot to make things feel just that bit more impactful!
I love it when I can modify in-game characters to be community members.

I'd love to stream more SoD2, but there's nothing more to be done in the game: I've run every map on Lethal mode, and even cleared Darkside and Multiplayer.

Commander, you may instruct your man to exercise restraint with using explosives.
So I saw a ... Unique strategy recently, someone ran around with everyone carrying shields until he stuck them all in Wolf armor, it was surprisingly efficient
Completely useless against Androns and Drones, but I assume they carried electroshock grenades.
@@DDRJake no actually, rifles/machine guns in their backpacks to provide actual killing power. Shields just helped mitigate any FOW hidden killshots

Am I remembering correctly that you can change a C4 timer after it has been set? Because if so (assuming they work as intended) you could just send scouts out with a C4 set for like 2 turns. If they live you change the timer again to last longer, but if they get surprised and shot you have a nasty explosive surprise for the aliens.
Probably not something you'd want to do all the time (for one it sounds tedious) especially if you want to go down the same route with other characters who might end up in the potential blast radious. But I could see some situations where it might help if it works the way I think it does.

Thoughts about the challenge after watching the video half way through:
Jake, if you're restricted to ballistics only your primary weapon will be nades more than anything else, with rocket launcher as a long range option, and stun batons as shotgun-assault replacement. Later in the game the only relevant ballistic weapon will be machine gun, and only barely too. (Only machine gun and sniper rifle will have enough armour piercing to even hope to deal damage to tougher enemies, and sniper rifles will lack the damage output to be useful. Everything else will simply make no or next to no damage, even shotguns with their multiple pellets: many times zero is still zero). Everyone else will be better off with a shield and a nade directly equipped in the main hand, for action point cost reduction, and stun baton in the backpack for close quarters combat when required. You might start practicing this grenade intense meta right now, while the game is still somewhat forgiving.
I for one can't wait to see our tactical assault snipers run in with a shield and a bomb
I disagree, all weapons will remain relevant into the late game. Even if zero damage is dealt by a weapon, armour does degrade under fire, so we just need to focus-down enemies individually. My personal preference will be shotguns and MGs.
Inspired by this I went to look up the stats of the Xeno scum. It turns out that the only aliens who have armour against non-chemical attacks are the Androns and the Drones, and even then it is not very high: between 20 and 45. On top of that, Androns have zero incendiary armour.
So even those bulky-looking Sebilians in their thick plating and gambesons are going to take full damage from our crummy cold war weapons. They have a lot of health, but we have a lot of bullets.
As for the armoured robots and drones, explosives will tear them wide open, but even if that is somehow not an issue, that small armour value will be shredded off with just a couple of shotgun blasts, since armour degrades by damage dealt * 0.25. A couple of shotgun blasts each dealing 90 damage will strip the armour off of almost anything.
@@DDRJake Oh, that's interesting! I've had a run where I got crippled due to series of unfortunate events and had to revert to basic guns mid game. I swear the enemies just would not die. Maybe it was just a lot of HP and not damage reduction. Anyway, I switched to grenadier builds and used them to great effect. The only noticeable drawback was lack of reaction fire against sneaky Reapers.

Can you still use alien weapons you pick up in that mode ? Or even that is forbidden ?
It is allowed, but alien weapons come with a massive accuracy penalty which usually makes them not worthwhile.
