Hurricane Ida dropped a whole habitat management plan on my property, free of charge. Lost all the huge 120+ year old hardwoods and have seen crazy amounts of diverse wildlife ever since. Did have to cut some paths for deer to be able to move around, as the number of blowdowns made things completely impassable to larger animals. Looked like god was playing pick-up sticks. We think of these storms as only being destructive, but they can also be a hugely regenerative force. It changed the way I view forests. I cherished my huge old growth trees and was heartbroken when they fell but, in retrospect, my property was basically a tree desert before.
I love the natural common sense approach y’all use. Nature is an amazing thing.
I always dreamed of owning my own land someday. I lease now, and may own someday. I made a forester/realtor give me a look when I said "I would like to buy 100 acres of fresh clear-cut someday." He rubbed his chin and said "wouldn't you want some return?" I said, yeah getting to make it how I want would be return.

As a 30 year forester everything Grant said is 100% correct and what I would have said about natural regeneration and not trying to log a couple acres. Break up in larger acre stands on a staggered rotation of commercial pine production with slash or loblolly (long leaf takes too long for commercial production). leave some natural in between stands. Plant sawtooth oaks that produce in 3 years.

What I think is cool is when Grant gets boots on the ground and creates a plan to the landowners goals. Appreciate him and the landowner for taking us on this trip and sharing on the ground ideas and photos. Hope Bobby doesnt mind getting the updates to Grant so us other landowners can see the results as well. Another example of Grant helping with habitat improvement one landowner at a time. Thanks guys

I have a quarter section also (just under 160 acres). I recently made a similar decision to spray the pine uplands with a helicopter, and followed up with a burn. I have a couple of things I learned to share with you that are important. 1. Hire a forestry consultant to make a gps upload for the site to give the pilot before spraying that clearly outlines the spray area (some spray companies can do also). Don't let him approximate it. It's worth the money to exclude/save the small areas that are important to you. Just keep in mind they cannot be too small and be workable. It mainly applies to edges you want gone around not across or straightened out. 2. Plan to leave a few areas for some diversity, preferably a couple of strips of brushy area for cover for the deer and rabbits-otherwise they will temporarily relocate to your neighbors after you burn it clean. I sprayed and burned too large of a percentage of the upland pine areas at once and had a slim deer season, but it looks great and next year will be better I am sure. I just wish I had designated a bedding area or two to not burn this first time. He is correct that the seedbank is there for native annuals and forbs-they are just waiting on sunlight to help them re-establish.

At 10:30 on those pines he wants to keep, why not bring a forestry mulcher in to grind down all the sweetgums. Then drive the UTV w sprayer through there and treat with Imazapyr?
Russ - that's an option - but is an expensive option and the pines were too crowded.
The Lord has loaned me our forest land for a short time, I pay the government rent in property taxes. Our land is a Treasure forest, we subscribe to best management practices and multiple use. Timber and pulp production for income for my retirement, recreation hunting and fishing, it consists of planted longleaf,improved loblolly, natural hardwood bottoms, stream management zones smzs, food plots and planted sawtooth oak, chestnut trees and other fruit or hard mast producing trees. I am getting long in the tooth, and pray when I am gone my children and grandchildren will continue to manage these properties the Lord has loaned to us. I consider forest management a science and art, a good forestry consultant is money well spent. I like to get multiple opinions to make major decisions. Enjoyed your video.

I have a hardwoods clear cut that's 4 years old. I think it's time to run a fire through it? Should I do a late growing season burn or burn in the next few months?
Burn when the conditions allow for a hot fire or a 4 year old clearcut will become a tangle that's very expensive to manage.
Another amazing video! I assume your team is continuously working with green cover on your seed mixes, will there be any changes for 2024? I’m considering the fall browse pressure release but I’m located in north Texas and unsure if it will perform here
We are tweaking and working on blends for 2024 now! The landowners we assist in Texas had very good results with the Fall Browse Pressure Release blend during 2023!

In a nutshell he’s talking about getting rid of all the undergrowth that’s strangling the pine trees.I think.
On this property the landowner needs to start over as the volunteer pines are too thick in many areas to be productive.
