Professional athletes shouldn’t need a coach to motivate them. Playing hard is a personal choice, and also a responsibility to your teammates. A coach can “talk” to players and help them out with holes their game. If they see results, the confidence will build. You can’t be successful unless you’re confident you can make a difference out there, otherwise you’ll hide and stay out of the battles. This is what we’re seeing from 93, 23, 20, 13, 16. They don’t want the puck. The best way to get back your confidence is to get in the small battles and play physical. This is not a time to cower, it’s a time to get right in the dirty areas and prove to yourself that you can win the tough challenges. A coach can’t help you with that. They need to get their minds right…
100% agreed. As a player myself, I always felt like if the puck wasnt going in, bad bounces, Hockey Gods, whatever...you always had to work. I don't see this with some of the NYRs. Clearly the puck isn't moving like it did last year, but where's the effort? The hockey basics? Id like to think there was a time in hockey where you could call an MFer out, right to his face. Now, players have reps, managers, PR, team pyschologists. It's different type of player and Id imagine being an old-time coach with current players is difficult.
Great Post Smash.Trocheck i believe has been fine, but the other veterans have been weak/soft.They should be embarrassed that Culyle is their best player and the youngster should be their motivation.!!
@ thank you for your reply! I agree, Trocheck hasn’t been as bad as the others, but his game has dropped off considerably. Wouldn’t want to place the burden on Cuylle in only his second year, but he’s certainly captain material. That’s been the kiss of death with this franchise, but I believe it’s been the result of poor choices. Being named captain can serve to be a huge boost for a player who can handle it. Fox could use a boost, but I’m not sure he’s captain material (too quiet and not very assertive). I believe Trocheck can handle it and, perhaps benefit from the extra responsibility.

Many times I’ve felt proud and grateful to have Zibanejad as a Ranger. But somehow I can’t see him as part of the solution now. If he can’t be moved, they should just communicate to him that they understand he is not really a 1C/point per game player, they don’t expect that of him, and if he can just chill out and play like a $3-4m/year player then that is much better than being a total head case.
It's difficult. The lack of toughness, the contract etc. I always thought he could be s second center behind a guy who is more two way leader. This is why he sees Barklov in his sleep. Take care 👍🏒!
