Guys... I'm slightly confused if the nikaah is already done or not. But I'm seeing engagements become a common practice in Azad Kashmir. As someone who is British born and bred but wears the hijab proudly and grew up in a traditional Kashmiri household, I grew up believing practices like engagements are not very Islamic. Exchanging a promise of action i.e. giving ones word is enough to secure an alliance. A ring has no more significance than that word itself. If it is a gift, it can be given by the parents. Engagements and exchanging rings without a nikaah as a non-mahram is against the teachings of the Quran and the Prophet pbuh. Surely such an act and ritual prior to nikaah is an imitation of those of other religions- And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever imitates them is one of them.” Where are the traditional Kashmiri who were known for their simplicity and purity gone? 😕

The engagement ring has no significance in Islam and is an unislamic ritual/practice. Holding hands/romantic pictures and ceremonies with someone who is not yet your mahram is not a dignified act with suits muslims either. As a British Kashmiri woman- I would genuinely feel so ashamed if a man who is not my mahram was doing all this- especially in front of my father 🤦🏻♀️😳
