I absolutely loved the video through the city just as much as the scenery in Cat. Island… I felt like I was right there with you guys. Awesome awesome work.
What a fantastic place and it was great to see Long Beach and Queen Elizabeth which reminded me of my trip there last year. Thanks for sharing it was really fun to watch. The progression from being in the city and then making it to Catalina Island was also an interesting contrast.
I didn't really notice the contrast but do now that you mentioned it. Glad it brought back some good memories from your visit to Cali. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Found your channel while researching Catalina. Love everything about this video. Thank you for the onscreen descriptives. And for not pointing the camera at your head while you talk.
@@schmeebot7903 Thank You! I try to do a balance of providing a resource for future adventurers and yet capture the adventure. I agree no need to see my noggin instead of the awesome surroundings. Show the scenery rather than talking about it
@@socaljoe Hi Joe. We just did a one nighter on Catalina, camping at Shark Harbor. We rode the equivalent of your day 2 and day 3 plus a couple of small spurs, Catalina Harbor and Black Jack Mountain. We tried to get to Orizaba but the fencing was not passable. But we did get a clear view of the runway and watched a couple of planes take off. We passed on going to the airport because of the pot-holey road and lack of time. We didn't get to see a bison up close like you did but we did see two afar. And foxes. The ride back to Avalon was hectic; I had to walk the two steep sections. We managed to get back to Avalon with enough time for a nice dinner before getting on the 7:40 ferry. All and all, nice trip. Thank you for the route beta and the inspiration!
That was awesome to watch - thanks for doing it so I could sit comfortably indoors and watch. :) I lived a huge chunk of my life in SoCal and only went to Catalina twice. Now I want to visit and spend more time to see more of the island.
@@DeniseLookingOut I know there was water at Hermit Gulch (Avalon) and Two Harbors. I know Parsons was primitive and I think Little Harbor was too. One can preorder water and firewood for those sites. Our mileage per day was pretty short and we would pass water along the route. I wouldn't recommend doing it in the summer. I will say it's an expensive adventure. $85 RT ferry, approx $40 night camping, $35 permit plus everything costing more being on a island
Wow! Another world. Thanks so much for sharing all of this. A most excellent edit and narration ~ with drone shots! So cool. I've heard of this place and you are sharing the details. Thank you so much. Just great. ~~~ Mr. Not Worthy from New Hampshire.
This past winter we did a similar bike packing trip across Catalina starting in Pasadena. 100% bike path from Arcadia to LGB. We had a fantastic time! Highly recommend!!!!
@mattgti86 Definitely the way to go if one is more east than we were and/or wants to ride on bike paths exclusively . Hopefully they connect the path from DTLA to Downey by the Olympics. There is something very satisfying about leaving from your front door by bike for an adventure!
That Bison tho! 😲 I took my 3 kids to Two Harbors and we camped in the tent on the right ha 13:37 My daughter absolutely enjoyed the peace & tranquility of this side of the island! 🥰 The other day my neighbor the maga goon told me they should build casinos on the island. 😩
nice ride.....i plan on having base camp at 2 harbors....riding a mtn bike to parsons...then riding to Avalon and back with stops at airport and lil harbor....might even do some freediving off isthmus cove
I flew in once in a cessna 206, friend was a pilot. all those trails go up then down. not much flat over there. 13 miles decent from the airport to little harbor, turned around to climb it. there were bee's galore eating at the airport. I think back in the late 70s I camped under that picnic table you guys were at at little harbor. we were told it's the best place to not possibly get stepped on by a bison, lol. fun times if your a rider. if not don't let anybody talk you into it 🤣
I used to live next to the LA river in Long Beach…. As a kid I’d frequently jump on the river to ride my bike or skates down to Catalina landing. Shoreline and occasionally Seal and Huntington Beach. Use caution around the “city” areas - especially since there’s a heck of a lot more homeless people hanging about the underpasses. There’s a certain amount of danger you put yourself in making that bike ride.
Great video! This is bucket list territory for me. I am curious if you were do to it again (without the pavement sections in LA) would you consider a full suspension bike with lower gear to better handle the climbs and descents?
@@klurejr I had pretty low gearing. 30t chainring and 11-50t cassette in the back. For the route we took i think a gravel bike is a better choice to save weight. There may be some MTB trails there but the conservatory runs the backcountry there
@@socaljoe Thanks for the Reply! One day I hope to get out there for such an epic trip! I have hiked on Santa Rosa in the past - but they do not allow any Bicycles on that Island - but it would be an epic bike packing place as well.
Beautiful video! I just returned from backpacking the TCT. Was the bike trail different? I definitely saw some familiar sights, but some differences too! Very nice. Thanks!
@@racheljensen2902 thank you for watching and the nice comments. We were exclusively on fire/gravel roads (except for maybe the descent to Parsons) but i do remember crossing the TCT and seeing some backpackers. I spoke to one near the reservoir in the video. It was awesome 😎
Yes, having ridden that section several times it is the most challenging part with the debris, no shoulder and having to use the full lane with the big trucks. I think they are hoping to have the bypass complete in time for the Olympics. Thank you for watching
This looks epic. Curious; do you think you need a full on gravel setup for the gravel roads on Catalina? I have a BMC Roadmachine currently riding on 28mm tires and am able to get away with light gravel in my area. Wondering if I would need beefier tires for Catalina? Thanks!
Love all the beautiful tents and “art homes” along the LA river. It’s a bummer when my tire gets a few punctures along that stretch from certain types of needles, but it’s nothing five or six inner tubes can’t solve. 👍🏼
Basically fly the drone so it’s at a start position and push the right stick to fly forward in a straight line as we ride past. There is a shot following us and that was probably the drone flying autonomously. Thanks for watching!
Those little camp grounds in the canyons near Two Harbors are "owned" by different SoCal yacht clubs. At least that is how it was explained to me when I visited years ago. Nobody was there, but I wasn't supposed to be there either.
Ha! Alas it was just the 2 of us but thankfully my friend Dave is patient with the process (and me) and gladly holds my bike while I run up hill for the camera placement.
Are e-bikes permitted there? I've sailed to and around the island many times but never explored the interior, which was interesting. Got engaged there in 1996 on a mooring.
I would suggest a google search or the Catalina island conservatory site. They basically run the island but my instinct is probably not in the back countyry
Really enjoyed the video but one issue is the volume when music is playing need to turn down then crank up to hear you speak........... Great job on those hills!
Yup, that’s $27 in transaction fees for 3 nights and that’s before the campground fees and the $35 back country permit needed to ride the bike, although the $35 is good for a year
