FreeCAD has really made huge improvements in the last year. I greatly appreciate the efforts the developers put into polishing the UX and fixing annoying bugs. There still is some room for improvement but FreeCAD has become a very usable alternative to commercial CAD software whereas about 1 or two years ago I quit multiple projects and restarted them in onshape because FreeCAD did weird or annoying things. So thanks to everyone who worked hard to get FreeCAD to where it is today!
I've been using Freecad for a long while (modelling for 3D printing), and I do think this update deserves the 1.0 version number. I don't want subscription software or my files being held hostage in some cloud, and I'm not gonna pirate anything. Freecad was "more or less good enough" for my purposes, but it feels like a mature product now.
i move to freecad from F360 about one year ago and in the last year its really jump and get to "close to easy cad" so yes the 1.0 is good for the pricing you talk about (F360) its just the start you need to add "models" for alot of the work so its go up and up BUT F360 do get "free" version for "home use" still freecad is the only way for me (and the only one that work out of the box on linux)
Great topic, great video. Please be careful of audio volume when playing the FreeCAD demo video and the outro music. You talk quietly so I turn my volume up to hear you, then I get blown away when music plays.
@ I use headphones. But unfortunately I have bad hearing and I actually need headphones so I can crank up the volume. I need useful feedback from healthy ears so I can better tune my video. I dropped the intro sound -5db down in my latest video, I hope it is good now.
@@LinuxRenaissance I just listened to the freeBSD 14.1 video. The sound is much improved. That 5 dB was a good change. If I were to be picky, I would suggest lowering another 2-3 dB and a little longer fade in with your outro music. This would help the listener "get into" the music? I'm guessing you do a 3 second fade in for outro, try 6 seconds? If you do no changes it will also sound good👌
@Open5to6 I am a bit away from my computer so I cannot check my fade seconds, but I can imagine the proposed difference in my head. I will test the longer fade in the next video. Thank you!
The only constant about software versioning schemes is that there are no constants. Version numbers can mean anything, or even nothing at all! If there's some semantic to the numbers, then it has to be established by the project or its surrounding ecosystem.
@@nmavor It's not about the code, rather it's about an attempt to get industry to adopt a FreeCAD-based CAD software. That is what will really propel development; when professionals and companies with millions if not billions of dollars are using your tool. Further, if industry uses a FreeCAD-based CAD software as its standard, then it'll trickle down into education, academia, and just what is generally supported and taught to most people. That is the strategy Fusion 360 has employed to be so dominant.
I've played around with it a bit this morning and there is definitely some usability gone into it over the last release. They need to keep their attention on this because all there less rough edges it is still not an easy tool to use compared to the likes of Onshape or Fusion 360. It needs to stop throwing so many buttons in the user's face at any given moment.
Just video title triggered me. FreeCAD 1.0 is loose on all fronts. First of all I need to express huge gratitude for developers, and everybody involved. Without you we wouldn't have any freedom at all, But to get to freecad 1.0 was super rocky, TopoNaming problem was a big problem for years which was solved in every other proprietary CAD software. Ondsel died which I was very excited about and I was hoping that will be lifeline that freecad needed. We are loosing CAD battle on all fronts. I feel like it's dangerous saying otherwise. FreeCAD is extremely important FOSS tool, but FreeCAD 1.0 is not win.
As I said in the video, I am not a CAD user but I am a libre software enthusiast, FOSS if you will. I love to celebrate everything libre software and I felt like FreeCAD isn’t getting enough love from content creators because it’s not a mainstream topic. I need to do what I can to rectify this. Now a question for you, from me who is a total newb regardin CAD: are parts of Ondsel not integrated in FreeCAD? Can you please teach me why is losing Ondsel this significant?
your gimic with the shirt is gone i am dissipointed been seeing it less (saw last time under shirt) but sure is nice to have some programs that get finished.
@@LinuxRenaissance i ment your pack man shirt kind of became a gimmick like the red hat. maby i am using gimmick incorectly but like a staple of the channel that you expect to see wen watching.
@@IceBlade1992 unfortunately I only have one and I actually go to work/office in that shirt so if I record on the same day then it ends up in a video. Otherwise it ends up in the washing machine 🤓 I might be able to buy one more. The thing is, I was looking into purchasing a whole red suit. But that’s not readily available in stores, I would have to order it to be made for me. Appologies for thinking out loud, perhaps I can buy a 2nd Pac-Man just for recording so that one will always be available for the camera I guess.

I am a CAD user. I've used Autocad mechanical. mechanical desktop. pro engineer. Pro E. And free cad feels like home for me.
This is a really nice thing to read ❤️

Sorry about that; I will work on improving this. And thank you.
Especially for viewers who wear headphones.

majorgnu! It is nice to see you again 🫡
But “1.0” sure does look nice, doesn’t it?
The HAT!!! Subed just because of that
Thank you very much!
This is great news for the community. I also have never used AutoCAD or freecad software but i can see the importance of it. Yay 🙌
Unfortunately, Ondsel has shut down operations at the same time.
FreeCAD 1.0 is nice, but the loss of Ondsel is a meaningful setback.
a lot of the Ondsel code was/is backport to freecad so its not "dead"

I may get a 3D printer in the future. That will be my limit of needs for software like this so I am glad to see them actively developing it.
