Tech tip! Leave the T50 bolt threaded on the last few threads so you won't reef the steering wheel off and possibly damage the clockspring and connectors! Great video man!
Normally just turn the wheel 180 degrees so it's upside down to get to the holes. Then I normally use a pick or even a small Allen wrench to insert into the hole and push the clip. They are a pain even at the best of times so it all about patience. If you don't feel comfortable definitely take it to get done somewhere. It sometimes helps to take of the trim from around column off to get better access. And most importantly disconnect both cables from the battery before doing any of this. Good luck!
Thanks for share this project! I do the change last week, the original wheel look good but is too big , the 2012 wheel is smaller, better grip and new letter! total cost $400.00. Look Awesome now.
@@ssjohnny6311 As long as you get the right replacement wheel (auto). I assume your current car is auto, so as long as you get a updated wheel for an auto should work without any issue. If you get a manual wheel it will not have the paddles.
well im doing this! hope the paddles still work unfortunately i have a automatic but it was the cleanest unmodified gen 5 that i could find in my area at least.
Hello! Nice tutorial, I’m following it for upgrading mine… but I’m installing a LED wheel, so by chance would you know which one of the wires is a 12v switched in the old style harness?!
Front bumper is super easy! I did mine with no experience and got it off and on in about an hour! Door is pretty simple to take off a little bit harder to put back on
I could use some direction. I started this adventure of replacing my 2013 Camaro HUD. Everything was going well until I removed the steering wheel. I forgot to remove the wire harness for clock spring and pulled it apart (ribbon is hanging out) when I removed the steering wheel 😥. Do you know if there will be any issue if I just replace with a new spring unit?
Owch, sorry to hear. Yes I'd recommend replacing the clock spring, just make sure it's like for like (IE you had stereo controls/auto or manual) that way the harness will line up without repinning
I kinda wanna do this for my 2011 camaro but it’s just an LT. I’m wondering if this would make much of a difference. Have the volume buttons on the wheel seem nice though.
Swapping to a higher trim wheel won't automatically give you volume control. You will need the clock spring and harness to the stereo from a higher trim as well
You'll lose your auto paddles (if you had them), you'll also want to verify the buttons are the same. You can't add a wheel with stereo buttons to a non-stereo wheel car and have them work without a different clock spring and harness.
does the steering swap keep all the functions from car? I'm planning on swapping my 2013 steering wheel to the 2011 version, I just wanna know if it will keep all the functions from the 2013 model.
Swapping forward retains all buttons so I'd guess backwards works as well. Just can't add buttons to a car that didn't have them prior, that requires a different click spring and harness
Yes, if it was a car with steering wheel controls prior swapping forward retains all functions. I'm just guessing but going backwards should be the same.
Haven't personally done it but don't see why it wouldn't work. Same would apply for going forward, make sure trim levels match, IE auto to auto, manual to manual, stereo controls to stereo controls. You can't add a stereo control wheel to a non stereo control car without a diff clock spring and harness.
im planning on getting a aftermarket wheel for my 2011 ss but i dont want the airbag light constantly on. do you know of any sites that sell resistors or any tricks to keep it off?
Hi. Know this is a late reply but if the clockspring turned at all while the steering wheel was off then you'll need a new clockspring as the winding inside of the clockspring unwound and broke. It's a thin ribbon of wire inside of the clockspring that is very delicate and the slightest movement can break it. Hope this helps!
It's personal preference. I felt the 2010 wheel was too concave and the button placement angle led to misclicks all the time. Imo the later wheel looks better and is more functional
I don't know why people like the 2013 steering wheel it literally looks likes the sedan malibu's steering wheel. It's a sport's car not an economic sedan.
@@WarzoneDouble The clocksprings look to be the same part number across all models so the tricky part would be if you have the dash harness from the stereo to the clockspring to support that. Pretty extreme cost savings if GM did that. Worst case is try installing the new steering wheel and see if it works. Project FD right that would be so good what I did I took the whole dash harness from a 2015 camaro just incase I need to replace the whole thing since I was trying to also add the touch screen stereo and the HUD dash you think if I replace the whole harness I’ll get all them to work thank you for your help and sorry for all the questions
i have tried everything, removed the airbag twice, disconnected the negative terminal, and made sure the plugs were seated and secured, even had a friend double check my work, airbag light still on and i cant reset it with my bosch scan tool. any advice?
That would not be a direct swap, you would have to move over clock spring/wiring and you will lose at least 2 functions (DIC controls and rev match) along with heated function (if supported) from the 6th gen that the 5th gen wheel doesn't have. Also you'd have to find an airbag that would be compatible with the stock 6th gen system. Plus, it would be a downgrade overall ;)
Gm won't tell you backwards compatible interchange if it didn't come that way. As for convertible I'm not aware of any differences unless there's a different button?
honestly i love the 2010 camaro ss interier style
I perfer the 2010 wheel.
The paddles aren’t even paddles there just buttons
It's terrible. Simply reaching the cruise buttons are a PITA because of how steep they're angle towards the airbag on the old wheel.
