Politicians often don't do what they say they were going to do; sometimes the situation has changes and so should their policy to suit, but sometimes their pledges are disingenuous with no real intent to carry through - that's a problem.

      Maybe you need to learn to "read between the lines". If she's saying people will all be able to access a GP then maybe (and I mean maybe) she's referring to freeing up GP appointments by removing people who have come here illegally. At the moment, if she came right out and said it she'd have the hand-wringers jumping their own height along with the legal aid lawyers. She's new to the job so let's wait and see what the next few weeks bring.

    i'm working full time for a government owned company that intends to cut conditions and pay, yet i cannot afford to pay the standing charges to the private gas and electricity companies, let alone use any for heat,

      Sadly, nuclear is far less efficient than coal and not as safe. Offshoots from coal fired could be resold in many ways. Offshoots from nuclear is for wars. Then they have to dispose of the waste by burying it or dumping at sea, which causes all sorts of problems and, some sites have been sold on and built over because it was 'profitable' to keep the public ignorant.

      @@pamt7740 I am referring to the smaller reactors. Less waste, less risk and more efficient. Every form of energy has a form of waste and it’s own issues, it is simple physics but you can’t genuinely believe coal is a better option in 2022…

      Thanks to the Blessed Margaret (I nearly said 'Market') all our public services have been trashed and financialised to the point of chaos. Energy, post, trains, water, to mention but a few. Get these privatised monopolies restored to public ownership. It's cheaper - no dividends and no profits. Greater coordination of what's in the nation's best interests, not the best interests of shareholders. No fragmentation of industrial relations and fewer strikes. A good system of budgeting will ensure they keep to financial targets.

      @@fod1855 I no longer live in the UK, but my understanding is there is a cost of living crisis and in particular it looks likely that a very large number of people will be unable to afford to heat their homes this winter.
      Her only policy on the economy is this same wet dream of a low tax country. That just ignores the present crisis.
      Shes been in government for at least a decade and has spent the last six weeks campaigning to be PM in which shes been asked over and over - it should not be News to her that people are struggling to pay their bills

      @@peterjermey7235 Yes you're right, but she's well aware of the problems. It's for that very reason that she is not willing to introduce a windfall tax. It's a quick fix at best, will not necessarily work and will certainly not improve the situation in the long run. The energy companies are only just starting to recover and make reasonable profits again, taxing them heavily would be nuts. Yes for many families at the moment it's tough and appropriate measures should be taken to ensure families are properly looked after but we really just have to ride this out.

    Thought she did good. I too think the energy companies should be told to spend the profits on UK investments and infrastructure in their businesses, if not, the profit would be taken as a windfall tax. Scrap the green agenda target dates and let it happen naturally. Energy self sufficient by 2024 by any and all means. Importing gas and oil from other countries by ship with a fuel consumption of 8 metres per gallon is not very green.

      But answer me this: Given there is no £170 Bn against which to levy a windfall tax why do you keep supporting the liar? The reality is this charlatan lawyer has taken a number out of a Treasury report that looks good shouted across the dispatch box and which he assumed no one would check. But check they have and as Mark Harper MP pointed out to Starmer in an intervention that is the global profits of all companies supplying the UK and he was misleading the House. It is NOT (as Starmer suggested) the profits of UK companies and which can therefore be taxed.
      Reality?
      In 2022 the Treasury estimate for UK based energy companies is £40 Bn profit. Which, with VAT, NI, Corporation Tax and the current windfall levy will see them taxed at 65%. That will never fund the £150 Bn the support programme will need.
      So yes taxpayers will part fund it.
