  • The Pando Clone is an aspen stand encompassing approximately 106 acres on the Fishlake National Forest. This clone (based on DNA testing) is thought to be the largest organism in the world. The Pando clone is declining and Forest managers and scientists are working together to study why and formulate solutions to reverse the decline.

It is the biggest organism because all of the trees in this area are genetically identical, meaning they all come from one single root very deep in the ground and its thousands of years old.

This is very cool I did not know about the Pando but have heard of the Aspen tree. the saplings shown look very similar to small tree saplings I have on my land here in Western New York

It makes me somehow tearful, that the clonal forest is actually older than religion, yet the individual trees are just basically saplings

maybe it's dying because you have a frigging highway going through it.

Maybe it does not need to replace dying stuff becouse it is somehow to much of it and have problem with feeding? So at certain point it might stabilise..

What about selling Pando seeds/sprout to other people who think it's a good chance for lumber harvesting or increase trees population.

they wouldnt be pando seeds, they'd just be aspen seeds. pando is a root system.

In any case, what you need is roots not seeds. Thought - is there one ancient original aspen stuck in the middle of all these saplings?

Thanks for sharing this info on Pando! In re: low regeneration, is the soil healthy? Yes, trees make soil, but ideal soil with beneficial bacteria & mycorrhiza could address viability. Good luck with your stewardship. Peace
