Being from Maryland, a lot of us were pissed with how Billick treated Trent. He clearly just did not like him for some reason. Ditched Dilfer for Grbac, which cmon at least give Trent his bench job back. Instead they didnt even talk to him when he came in to get his ring and his stuff. Just shipped him off and didnt even entertain the idea of keeping him. Billick was not actually a good coach. He got very lucky to have Marvin Lewis commanding his defense, Ray Lewis being a generational if not all-time talent, and a lot of the players on the Ravens being under-the-radar dominant players- Sharper, McCalister, Stokley(Sp?,) Ismail, and about 10 other names I could list but I'll stop. @@Adays700 - true, but Young had some big moments as a backup. He filled in for Montana and got the 49ers to the playoffs for the '88 season. He was excellent during the 1991 and '92 seasons that Montana lost to injury. He was an excellent backup who accomplished something every time he got a chance. He just never directly took them to a Super Bowl except after Montana had gone to KC and Young was the unquestioned starter.
As a Cowboys fan I think he should be like 7-8 CURRENTLY but if they manage to win again this year with him and he at least goes into the playoffs either as an eagle or somewhere else then he'd be a top 3
Why does everyone keep saying nick foles should be number 1 lmao. I'm not saying he shouldn't be on here but hell number 3 jim plunkett came in as a backup and led the raiders to a super bowl but then came in week 10 like a few years later a d lead them to another super bowl so unless nick foles leads the eagle to another super bowl, there is no way he should bbe number one.
Tom Brady backed up Drew Bledsoe. Picked #199 in the 6th round after 31 teams passed on him 6 times! Won his first Super Bowl (as a back up QB) when I was 27 years old. Just won another one, his 6th, last year after I turned 45... How is Brady not #1?
I think this list is more about quarterbacks who spent either the majority or at least a significant portion of their career as a backup, and when called upon to come off the bench, they’re able to get results. Brady is the greatest quarterback of all time but after 2001, he wasn’t a backup anymore, he was the full time starter and never looked back. If you go by that criteria, Kurt Warner would be higher than Brady on the list because he did it twice, coming off the bench to replace an injured Trent Green in 1999 and leading the Rams to a Super Bowl win, then doing it again in 2008, he was the backup to Matt Leinart, got the starting job after poor performances by Leinart, and leading the Cardinals to an NFC Championship victory and two straight division titles.
Must have been produced before Nick Foles, Super Bowl MVP, 7 TD's in one game against the Raiders, has his own statue.......and other records. Number 2 in my books, right behind Kurt Warner. Kurt was the real deal too.
The Raiders super bowl win just happen to be the 1 year i lived in N. Ca, my uncle had 4 season tickets to them , i went to every home game and the 1 playoff win against Bum Phillips Oilers, pretty cool, i picked a good time to visit family. ha
Drew Bledsoe will always be my #1 backup quarterback. Not because he was actually a backup quarterback, but because if Drew Bledsoe is your starter your team's backup quarterback will begin to play amazing and take his job.
George Blanda once came into a game for the Raiders and they scored 4 times in the final 4 minutes to win the game. Most amazing performance I ever I witnessed!
25:55 The 1980 Raiders became "the first Wild Card team EVER to make a Super Bowl." Uhhhh, no. Even if you discount the 1969 Chiefs, who finished 2nd to the Raiders, yet advanced to face the Vikings in Super Bowl IV, the 1975 Cowboys finished 2nd to the Cardinals in the NFC East, yet upset the Vikings (the original "Hail Mary") and Rams as the Wild Card team and went on to face the Steelers in Super Bowl X.
The original Hail Mary was Doug Flutie at Boston college, dude. He’s the reason they call it a Hail Mary...you know that right? Whatever came before was not a Hail Mary because the term hadn’t even been invented yet.

Weird how the Packer quarterbacks backing up Brett Favre, 5 became full time starters, 3 pro bowlers, 1 super bowl champion and 1 MVP, and the NFL.com analysts acknowledge their backupness on this list at NUMBER SEVEN
Young is known mostly as a starter. This is mostly about career back ups or one year wonders. Brady would have to come off this list as he is now a starter. You get it
Foles should be right below Plunkett, but I don't think anyone would argue if he was #2. But, since the story is still being written, if he somehow does it again late in the season, he is #1.
I thought this list was going to be about guys who were career backups that delivered when they needed to, not eventual stars who happened to be a back up for their first couple years.
Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Kurt Warner, Aaron Rodgers, etc. All great quarterbacks who were backups, but because of some circumstances (injuries, trades, retirements, etc.) became starters. Makes you wonder how many great quarterbacks we've missed out on (or are missing out on) simply because their quarterback didnt get hurt or leave the team
Did you forget that guy named Brett Farve? You named his backups but he was a backup as well. In 1992 he was a backup to Don Majkowski. When Majkowski was injured, Farve replaced him and never looked back.
I turned it off after the second qb. Trent Dilfer, coming off a five year stretch where he started every game he appeared in, something like 60 games, and...Tom Brady.
I love Jim Plunkett and wouldn’t consider him a backup because he began as a starter, lost his way, and then regained his starter status. Some of these other guys were backups, got a moment to help the team, and then went back to backup status.
Unquestionably? Not at all. The only records he holds are career yards, which is a collection stat. His individual efforts are not exceptionally above everyone else like you're suggesting. Doesnt have the most in season, game or per attempt (Manning, Van Brocklin and Graham respectively) He has super bowl victories on a technicality, he's tied with Otto Graham who had 7 championships- the superbowl with a different name- and lead his team there 10 consecutive seasons. He's a great quarterback but the only reason for the NFL to hype him up as the greatest is as marketing. He's another in a line of generational talents that has their individual up and downsides, mostly up, but does not stand out above the others because he cant, nobody can. You really cant pluck a player from an era and say they're better than everyone who played under different circumstances, with other players, under different rules, with teammates, ownership, coaching, medical technology and other things outside of their control all as factors. Even Belichick thinks Bert Jones was a better QB, but he lived in a time before the medical technology could properly support him. They ruined his shoulder whereas today he would have been able to play 15 years. So no, the jury is out unless you're just playing the fanboy.
Steve Young and Nick Foles. Also Ryan Fitzpatrick. I get Ryan never went from back-up to starter to champion, but Ryan is a solid back-up and a back-up to feel confident in off the bench.

He couldn't make an NFL roster the first few years of his career. He backed up Trent Green before he had his coming out party before losing his job to Marc Bulger. He was shipped off to NY where he was just keeping the seat warm Eli and was out cast to Arizona to sit behind Matt Leinhart. He spent a good part of his career as a back-up. He is well-deserved of the HOF, but how can you not remember him as a back-up?
THAT is how good Warner was...he puts me in mind of a Jim Plunkett; both were highly talented, very experienced, had tasted the sweetness of success and the bitterness of defeat and were almost lost to the game, yet found redemption.
I believe Jeff Garcia should be on this list. Look at his body of work after his San Fran run. He became a journeyman that had solid outings with several franchises.
Agreed. He even did decent in Detroit.
People saying Foles are going to be sad to see that this video is actually a number of years old.
Where’s Nathan peterman
He doesn’t count cuz he was only a backup cuz he felt bad for Tyrol Taylor and Josh Allen and wanted them to start
Ha Ha So FuNnY
It wouldn't be fair to have him on a list with these scrubs. Peterman was changing the way the position was played but these low IQ fans never could understand his God like play and neither could hisreceivers. It's all there fault. He they just listen to his teachings, the buffalo Bill's would be undefeated still. Smh, coaches, gm, even the owner should be fired for being too blind and dumb to not see his God like potential and talent.
@@thomasc.5219 Peterman was pulling a rocky and throwing ints and digging the team deeper only to come back with 5td's in the second half but was pulled out before he could show it off
Go colts
I keep remembering that one hit that changed someone’s career to becoming great thank you Mo Lewis
I love that Drew Bledsoe wasn't pissed off that Brady took his job. How encouraged him, told him good good job and tried his hardest to win his spot back, but couldn't. He didn't act like Brett Favre
He was not playing well before the injury TBH !
“Tom Brady, this kid is nervous” Dont think ive ever heard that before
That guy had no clue what he was saying. The previous clip he said if Brady threw the ball on line it was a pic 6. It went right through the defenders hands lol
@@wessimons5028 that was because the pass was high and behind
Cause he actually had to play a Lil when defenses were allowed to actually tackle... Then the changed the rules for brady so he could keep playing... Because sports r rigged and fixed for views and money sadly.
@@wessimons5028um because if he throw it lower that ball was gone the other way.
1:47 I swear to god the only clip of tony playing in existence that one of him hurting that raiders QB
At the time of of his 3rd Superbowl, he had the most, 2nd most, and third most passing yards in any Superbowl game. Kurt Warner is a Hall of Famer.
amen
To me the ultimate backup QB for me was Don Strock (Dolphins)… guy always delivered off the bench for Shula
When Boomer said "#1 overall pick," I can tell you people in Fresno even to this day treat him that way
He was #6 tho?
@@booradley6832 yeah and people in Fresno treat that like he won the presidency. So you can imagine how the Carr family is treated (don't get me started on *THAT* rabbit hole)
Fact that Kurt Warner told them that about Eli Manning, mad respect, great dignity shown from Kurt, sucks he was plagued by concussions i hope his later years will not cause him trouble like others who suffered lot of concussions playing sports.
How you gonna forget Steve Young. He was Montana’s backup.
they were both system qbs wouldn't make sense
@@themega9179 Montana a system QB? No way. He made an AFC championship with the chiefs after leaving SF. Even Brady at one time was considered a system QB more than Montana was.
I love throwing these on in the background while I’m playing Madden.. pls keep making them

Bledsoe: " you just wanna throw so you can get on TV"
Tom Brady: "Thats cute"
The Irony
Honorable mentions: Danny White (punted and backed up Staubach), Steve Young (behind Montana), Romo (behind Bledsoe and has a brilliant football mind), Dandy Don backed up Eddie LeBaron for two torturous years before taking over and taking the Cowboys to back-to-back NFL Championship games, where they lost both times to Lombardi's prime Packers, and with both games decided in cinematic fashion at the goal line on the final play of the game.
All four of them are worthy of this list.
Respect to Trent Dilfer - he deserves more.
He's supposed to be an offensive mastermind but Baltimores offense was always dreadful when Billick got to have his way.
@@booradley6832Dilfer was not a good QB lol. Threw almost as many interceptions as touchdowns that regular season and couldn’t even complete 50% of his passes or throw for 150 ypg in the playoffs. He missed throw after throw in the Super Bowl and threw a pick 6 on a screen that got called back.
Steve young? Foreal? He was a backup to joe montana fuggin geniuses...
it's about relief jobs as a backup. Reason why he isn't on the list
Steve Young was a starter when he won his Superbowl however.
@@Adays700 Steve Young played in '88 and '89 when they won those Super Bowls. When the 49ers let go of Joe Montana, some fans lost they damn minds. When Young and 49ers played Montana and the Chiefs, some 49ers fans were cheering for the Chiefs to win the game. I also believe Steve Bono should be on this list not apart of the Bret Favre back-up tree.
Steve Young was a backup for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before he went to the 49ers too, why he is not on this list blows my mind.

Nick Foles is the G.O.A.T 🐐
Foles is great but he can't compete with anyone on this list

Nick Foles for Number 1
He isn't better than Kurt
As a Cowboys fan I think he should be like 7-8 CURRENTLY but if they manage to win again this year with him and he at least goes into the playoffs either as an eagle or somewhere else then he'd be a top 3
Why does everyone keep saying nick foles should be number 1 lmao. I'm not saying he shouldn't be on here but hell number 3 jim plunkett came in as a backup and led the raiders to a super bowl but then came in week 10 like a few years later a d lead them to another super bowl so unless nick foles leads the eagle to another super bowl, there is no way he should bbe number one.
He didn’t win the super bowl again
Average QB
I almost forgot to see what it looked like to see Tom Brady nervous. Man, that was a long time ago.
Kurt Werner was a rookie at 29 years old and took his team to 3 super worlds and one 1 while also being the best qb when he played
@@tuggxs7637 Hey I like Kurt Warner too. That's a great point. But Brady is the best back up QB of all time.

33:16 Kurt Warner taught Eli well. Even this very lesson is what Eli is now doing with Daniel Jones.
George Blanda had a good "back up" season. Long time ago now.
That's old school my friend. Thank you for being up a guy who played in the NFL for 26 years. This guy could do everything.
Doug Williams Shoulda been Higher
Daniel I agree how about no.1 because of the historic significance of what he achieved.
@7:20 I think he just showed us Foles is #2 for biggest-dicked backup.
absolutely, top 3 undisputed, probably 1
Must have been produced before Nick Foles, Super Bowl MVP, 7 TD's in one game against the Raiders, has his own statue.......and other records. Number 2 in my books, right behind Kurt Warner. Kurt was the real deal too.
The Raiders super bowl win just happen to be the 1 year i lived in N. Ca, my uncle had 4 season tickets to them , i went to every home game and the 1 playoff win against Bum Phillips Oilers, pretty cool, i picked a good time to visit family. ha
I remember the Oiler coaching staff fighting each other on the side lines after the bills took over.
that clip of brady running for the td lol
As many games as he's won, he's probably lost just as many 40-yard dash contests. Haha
I’m a 300 lb high school lineman and had a faster 40 yard than Brady
George Blanda, Zeke Bratkowski. For that matter, Brett Favre was backup to Don Majkowski.
Drew Bledsoe will always be my #1 backup quarterback. Not because he was actually a backup quarterback, but because if Drew Bledsoe is your starter your team's backup quarterback will begin to play amazing and take his job.
Thank you for doing this. :)

20:20 if you're from ne ohio like me, hearing Nev Chandler calling some Browns spectacular play brings back alot of memories 👍
George Blanda once came into a game for the Raiders and they scored 4 times in the final 4 minutes to win the game. Most amazing performance I ever I witnessed!
25:55 The 1980 Raiders became "the first Wild Card team EVER to make a Super Bowl."
Uhhhh, no.
@@billthomas7975 No that's not right. Roger Staubach is credited with naming it the Hail Mary. 49ers were doing some play like this, but, called it the alley-oop pass back in the 50's or 60's.
@@billthomas7975: _"The original Hail Mary was Doug Flutie at Boston college, dude. He’s the reason they call it a Hail Mary...you know that right? Whatever came before was not a Hail Mary because the term hadn’t even been invented yet."_
Doug Flutie threw his game-winning TD pass to Gerard Phelan in 1984.
After the 1975 Wild Card game where the Cowboys upset the Vikings on a last-second touchdown heave from Roger Staubach to Drew Pearson, reporters asked Staubach about that pivotal play...
Reporter: "Roger, what were you thinking about when you threw the ball?"
Staubach: "Well, I closed my eyes and said a 'Hail Mary'".
Roger Staubach has a football on his shelf commemorating the '75 win over the Vikings, signed by him and Drew Pearson. It has "Hail Mary" written on the top line.
NFL Network has a UA-cam video entitled, "Roger Staubach: A Football Life - The Hail Mary". You should check it out. Or maybe check out the video, "The story of the Staubach/Pearson Hail Mary." Or perhaps the video, "'Hail Mary' A Tribute to Drew Pearson - Dallas Cowboys #88." Or be a real brain surgeon and use your favorite search engine and do a search using the phrase "original hail mary pass."
And be a little slower about being condescending next time. You'll be less likely to embarrass yourself like you did here, Bill.
Bill, your comment is bad and you should feel bad for saying it

This list needs to be fixed to have Nick Foles on it. And probably inside the top 3 too.
I thought Steve Young would be here somewhere ...
People stanning Nick Foles in the comments when friggin' Steve Young got snubbed!
They've got a point, you know.
Young is known mostly as a starter. This is mostly about career back ups or one year wonders. Brady would have to come off this list as he is now a starter. You get it
Where's Wade Wilson when he backed up Tommy Krammer in Minnesota
Foles should be right below Plunkett, but I don't think anyone would argue if he was #2. But, since the story is still being written, if he somehow does it again late in the season, he is #1.
I agree. In my opinion Plunkett should be number 1.
Here in Denver we're kinda proud of our backup Gary Kubiak. If Elway got hurt and Koobs had to go in you knew it was going to be alright.
How bout Brock oswiler
We never lost a step when Bubby Brister had to come in for Elway.
How the hell is Steve Young not on this list, let alone atop of the list??
Young was a starter when he won.
I thought this list was going to be about guys who were career backups that delivered when they needed to, not eventual stars who happened to be a back up for their first couple years.
Fortunately most of it is
Agreed. I would not consider Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Doug Williams, or Steve young backups. Nor Trent dilfer.
Steve Deberg?? He should be in here. Most of these "backups" are not true backups
Man, what a career. Played till the age of 44!
I have no idea how he played that long. He was mediocre at best.
@@robmitchell3039 He was around for that long for good reason. He played on a lot of bad teams. But he was effective later in his career
Not to mention those years he spent buried in the QB depth chart in Atlanta...
Steve Young didn't make the list?
disclaimer: this is a old top ten from years ago. We all know Foles should be on this list if not #1.
Case Keenum? Back up to Sam Bradford, Sam goes down. Keenum steps in, and takes the Vikings to the NFC championship
This came out in 2010.
Earl Morrel and Kurt Warner are legendary players at this point so having them as the top 2 back up qbs makes sense to me
Putting Brady on a list of top 10 backups is like putting Giannis on a list of top 10 sixth men
I turned it off after the second qb.
Trent Dilfer, coming off a five year stretch where he started every game he appeared in, something like 60 games, and...Tom Brady.
This needs to be redone #nickfoles
If he wins two SBs as a backup that would be incredible
FUGGIN IDIOT!!!
3:55 look like brady stunt double lol
I love Jim Plunkett and wouldn’t consider him a backup because he began as a starter, lost his way, and then regained his starter status. Some of these other guys were backups, got a moment to help the team, and then went back to backup status.
I watched SB22 from the CCU at a hospital in Fort Worth...Will never forget...
Steve Young, Nick Foles, and Big Ben. Reason why I say Big Ben he led the Steelers 14-0 for the year.
Brady didn’t just go from Backup to Winning The SuperB-owl,
Brady went from Backup to Unquestionably Thee GOAT. 🐐
Kurt Warner was an inspirational player and from what I understand, he is a good person ... Nice guys finish first!
Coach: I don’t want you taking snaps I mean sacks lmao
10:17
Earl Morrall really played behind Y.A Tittle, Bobby Layne, Fran Tarkenton, Bob Griese and Johny Unitas. That’s 5 hofs.
Steve Young and Nick Foles.
Also Ryan Fitzpatrick. I get Ryan never went from back-up to starter to champion, but Ryan is a solid back-up and a back-up to feel confident in off the bench.
Foles
