CMHC is a disgrace and should be disbanded. Let mortgage interest rates reflect a bank’s level of comfort with the risk. CMHC had a place for soldiers returning from a war who didn’t have regular credit history on which to base a mortgage application. However, like many administrations in government, instead of winding down when it was no longer useful, it grew into the monstrous bureaucracy that it is today.
Most Canadians are too busy patting themselves on the back, telling everyone that we have it great and we're better than the U.S. Canada is high on its own farts. It flat out sucks right now. Wages have been stagnant for decades while the cost of living (especially housing) has skyrocketed. Immigration is as high as ever before, exasperating the housing crunch. People like to compare it to developing countries and say our standard of living could be worse, but why are we comparing ourselves to these other countries? We should compare Canada to Canada before, just like a human being should do. Things are indisputably worse, most notably for younger generations: millennials, gen z. Countries like UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, are all experiencing identical problems. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? Canada should join the U.S like Greenland.
