Interesting to hear you talk about Somerset Maugham - Cakes and Ale, The Razors Edge and Of Human Bondage. He is one of my favourite novelists. His short story collections are especially wonderful as well, if you can get hold of a copy still (there were many editions and collections printed). Have you read 'The Painted Veil'? It's about mysticism, eastern philosophy, love, infidelity and mortality.Similar themes in many ways to the Razors Edge and Cakes and Ale so I'm sure you'd love it.
