  • Many colleges and universities have called in police to crack down on the pro-Palestine encampments that have popped up on dozens of campuses across the U.S. in recent weeks. But the ACLU of Massachusetts argues that response "escalates tensions" and "creates unacceptable safety risks." The organization's executive director, Carol Rose, joined Saraya Wintersmith to explain, along with Tufts Professor Amahl Bishara, Robert Pape, a University of Chicago political science professor and the director of the Chicago Project on Security and Threats.

Didn’t Brown or some university in Rhode Island agree to divest? It’s both a tragedy and a blessing that we see the flaws of universities and who controls their every move - donors. They are immobile and inept at standing by their own values.

They were camping out NOT blocking entrances you are in the wrong UA-cam section that is NOT what happened in MA. If your classes are NOT outdoors you could enter the building. Again facts are important. And in most cases, it's the university that blocked access.

Free speech doesn't infringe on safety, period. If a mob presents a threat to other students, it is NOT free speech.

They could try speaking reasonably with students about what they hope to achieve while respecting their rights and not crapping on their public image by just calling the cops on them like an angry elderly neighbor.

I have listened to this 3 times and all 3 times I got the same thing free speech is constitutionally protected the right to peacefully protest is protected blocking someone's movement are stopping them from using an area is not protected ripping a scarf off someone or a necklace is not protected destroying property is not protected violence of any kind is not protected setting up a tent city is not protected suspending students is lawful arresting them is lawful the rights are not being in French on the students committing unlawful act are being arrested and suspended lawfully so where's the problem it seems quite simple to me if you don't want to be arrested or suspended don't break the law

I think they buried the lead, I had one of these super left-wing professors once and I had to drop the course because we disagreed so much and I didn't trust her to grade me fairly. I nearly graduated late because of her. So that's a real fear on campus to all the students who just want to get a degree and go out and get a job.

More pressure needs to be put on the Universities to meet student demands. Our court system in MA should NOT shoulder the financial burden of political speech. The Universities should also have to pay an assessment tax for every arrest to cover court cost. They have brought these students from around the country and world and they now want to dump them into the state's criminal justice system. Universities do NOT pay enough real estate taxes to utilize the police. This is NO different than shipping migrants to MA from Texas or FL.

@@waynecmontgomery they don’t like it, they can move on. Universities are also entities in US. They receive money from government of US. If they want to admit people just because they pay money and these people will be voting for interests of other countries … well, universities can move to those countries. Or student can move to other universities. Companies unis are working with are critical to our security

@jenalatz3589 I have seen minimal violence. There are frat party fights that are more violent than what is happening at these protests. Police intervention is authoritarian and irresponsible and is why police should have even more scrutiny so we can avoid them being persecuted because of bad actors in their departments. If police abide by the laws themselves, they wouldn't be so distrusted by much of the population.
