4:40 Those upgrade prices for RAM and storage are outrageous. I could get 2 2TB NVMe SSDs for less than they're charging for just one. Definitely buy the base model and do the upgrades yourself.
It's how a lot of these small time laptop manufacturers make money. Almost all of these linux laptops can be upgraded manually after the fact but some users do not want to open their new device and are willing to pay the premium not to. For those of us who aren't afraid of opening the back plate, just buy some ram and an ssd on amazon.

Wow this laptop is almost exactly what I dream of - the PERFECT screen selection; large trackpad uh love it; not-overkill Nvidia GPU; upgradability is there; solid build quality with metal construction; a 1080p webcam that doesn't suck; and of course Linux support out of the box. And then the price! Oh my at €1550 it's basically among the best value out there.
Unfortunately my MSI laptop from 2019 is still doing just fine so I guess I'm not buying one. But if they are to make a refresh two or three years later, it will certainly be one of my top choices.

Thank you for this kind of detailed review. I've been using a lot of laptops in the past year from several different manufacturers, and I have to say - it is *really* hard to find one that has the combination of a good chassis, good keyboard, high quality matte screen (way too many with ~60%-70% sRGB), decent noise levels, and a reasonable price. My go-to productivity laptop, the Dell XPS series, has been a major let down in the past 1-2 years. Terrible quality control with LCD light bleed of a totally unacceptable degree for their price point (which Dell is either unwilling or unable to fix properly) defective touchpads, and noisy fans. You really go into the most useful details in your reviews, and recognize shortcomings appropriately. Good job, and thank you.
I got the business version(precision) of the 17in for linux support and I haven't had any issues with back light bleed and the touch pad is pretty darn good. Over all I am really happy with it and the build quality. Coming from a mac book it is just as solid or more. I would say it is a high bar to meet in terms of build quality and over all. It checked the most of my boxes for what I was looking for in a new laptop and it has exceeded my expectations.
Why do these include DC barrel jacks? They should just go USB-C charging only, and include a usb power adapter in the box. That way you can also use it with other devices you own. 140W power over USB-C is a thing... I doubt they need more.
Good video, as always! Thank you!!! This video and others that you have created have helped me a great deal! I have been using an HP Spectre X360 with Ubuntu for the past, six years. But, it has never worked perfectly. And now, from about a year ago until now, there are larger 'bugs' popping up...slow starts, extremely slow shut-downs or restarts...whole logs of things pop on the screen. And, updates get stuck in a loop where nothing seems to update. As best as I can tell, there is some kind of BIOS incompatibility... So, I just purchased the little brother of your recommendation. A high pixel / very good screen is most important to me (after made to run Linux/Ubuntu). I did not know about this company before your video. Thank you, again : )

I seriously considered this laptop in July, but I ended getting the ProX15 instead, because of budget. I love that machine though, very light and great screen :)
Oh man, I think I feel a little buyer's remorse as well. I just bought the RedmiBook 15 Pro (2022) for around 1200 euros and it has an i7-12650H (which is almost as good as i7-12700H (?)), RTX 2050 (which has around half the G3D mark rating as RTX 3050 Ti). Then both laptops have most of the things I want: 2k+ resolution, TB4 connection for possible gaming using an eGPU, keyboard with full size arrow keys and home/end keys, decent dedicated GPU, 15" form factor, lightweight, and good build quality. The only things that was missing from RedmiBook, that I wanted, but this laptop has are: upgradeable RAM (Redmi has 16GB soldered), and two M.2 slots (Redmi only has 1). Then Slimbook also beats RedmiBook by having: 1 more USB A port, 10WHr more battery capacity, 1080p webcam (Redmi has 720p), 1 more native video output (Redmi has HDMI 2.0 and TB4 but the extra USB C port doesn't support display out), and TUX key instead of Windows key ;) But I think I'm still happy with my purchase because I think the lack of features compared to the Slimbook is justified by the price difference. But now I'll definitely keep my eye on the future iterations of this laptop (maybe in 4-5+ years). Thanks for the review!
I use a number pad alot, as math is a daily need for me. I don't know why some people are bothered by them - use them, or don't. But not having one really slows me down.

I don't know about all you guys but I need at least 5 USB ports. Otherwise, it would be very inconvenient for me to use as I would always need to bring a USB hub with me. I'm using the HP Elitebook 8760w which I bought used without a hard drive for a very nice price and I love it.
Definitely something to maybe save up for and maybe the next model. Unfortunately as a Canadian my wallet would get destroyed by the conversion rate from Euros.
Finally a laptop with real arrow keys again that isn't a crappy "gaming laptop" The only thing I wish it had would be a 360 degree hinge and backlit keyboard. Then I could finally retire my 2015 Lenovo Yoga 3 1470 with an Nvidia 940M gpu.
Feal for you. I live in Czech Republic and here there is QWERTZ layout which also requires shift to be pressed to actually get numbers. Without you get the diacritics. Comming from Poland, where we get the diacritics with alt key, it's super anoying. Separate number keyboard is a must :) It still riddles me how capital diacritics are written, as shift plus a key gives you a number. Is switching caps lock on and off required? Must ask people eventually :)
I thought it was my eyes but the camera focusing in and out on the up close shots of the laptop were really tripping me out. Other than that, awesome video!
question: Does hybrid switching work? Like it does on windows? It's quite competitive to the Asus Zephyrus G15, not bad! Might be my next laptop! I have a few more questions though, where can I ask em?
Thank you for your review. I want to purchase a Linux-designed laptop for my next purchase. I have been using Linux for about 3 and a half years as my daily driver and want to support a Linux computer supplier. Yes, I know and understand that I will be paying a premium. However, I used Apple Macs for years and never complained about paying upward of $2,000+ for several on my Macs. Therefore, I have made peace with spending approximately $1,500 - $1,800 for my next Linux laptop. Thanks again, and God bless,
That AZERTY keyboard layout messes with my brain just by looking at it 😵💫😵 There are other good reasons for a numpad. Some programs (eg. blender) use them as function keys. It is very annoying if you have to rebind the keys just to have a somewhat same experience.
Damn I got the Stellaris as well and hot damn, this slimbook is a beast. Not only is it cheaper but has better performance, feels bad. But not too bad, the Stellaris is still an amazing laptop which I'll use for a few more years to come.
Great video, Merci! It is really funny how Apple hardware is a used comparison point by people from the Linux world. I get it that it is very good quality (usually) and so popular most the people tried it at least once, but still, keeping referring to Apple is not a good idea. Even Microsoft struggles to produce hardware that can compete in quality with Apple. So it is mission impossible for slimbook to produce as good as them. In my opinion, it doesn't serve them. It should be compared to Asus, Acer, and Dell, ... people doing a much smaller amount of each series than Apple, which has very little hardware choice in comparison. And Slimbook is doing at least as good as them, if not better!
What it takes to get to apples level is the willingness to put years into a product of R&D and then never ship it. for every product apple release they will have many internal projects that are multiple years of dev behind them that never ship. Your write that means smaller OEMs are going to struggle to do this as they just cant afford to have the majority of thier staff working on projects that will not ship.
Linux laptops shipping nvidia is something I'll never understand or get behind, even if you just run xorg, shit WILL break and you'll have to deal with extreme jank, and good luck trying wayland with xwayland introducing insane sync issues when using nvidia, when it even works at all that is. I understand that if you switch to Linux, Nvidia might be what you already owned and it makes no sense to switch but why anyone running Linux would voluntarily sign up for this hell and pay a premium on top of it goes beyond me.
@@ppolo12 myself i don't tend to need it on the fly in a laptop, it's best to just use a stationary pc for anything serious unless the laptop is one's only computer and they don't wanna use cloud computing, then i guess for that very, very, very limited number of people, easily less than 1% of the market, it makes sense to have nvidia in a linux laptop
Interesting brand. Two issues with their website/products 1. They don't list screen resolutions for their models AFAI can see. 2. Norwegian keyboard is not available, (understandable - we're a tiny market and Danish is pretty close) (I would have purchased the 14in version if it has more than 1080p vertical res. My Linux resistant Asus 14in has 2880x1800px res.) Maybe next time. I guess by then, the Linux kernel has caught up with my firmware issues and I can switch, yeah!
Update 22. Oct 2022 I found a patched kernel that works on Ubuntu. My Asus Vivobook now runs Kubuntu 22.10 exclusively. Thanks to Amit Singh Dalal. Good times! (I scale my screen/desktop to 1.25x - works really well)
So glad they made the ram and hd upgradable. Would recommend that USA buyers buy the base model and upgrade themselves. You can often get the ram and SSD for less than the company charges on their sites.
This would have been the laptop I'd have purchased if only it was also convertible with stylus. I ended up getting an Asus ROG Flow x13, so now begins the effort of making it work well with Linux. So far I haven't found any Linux laptops with both a dedicated GPU and convertible form factor + stylus.
Just got my new Executive 14 last week. It's almost the perfect laptop, screen wobbles way too much but that's all. The stickers were gone after not even 5mins. Even though I really don't understand why they slap so many on there.. One thing I don't understand: the BIOS almost has no options, and I have no idea were to find updates for that?
@@TheLinuxEXP Also the screen has the same specs (only the contrast ratio seems to be slightly different), same cpu and the same options for the gpu. Are they somehow affiliated? Anyway, thanks for your review! :)
Intel / NVIDIA? No thanks, I'll take the Pro X 15 model with AMD Ryzen 7 + 16 GB RAM and install Kubuntu 22.04 on it. That would make the perfect office laptop for me. No gaming needed.
well I bought AMD/nvidia and believe me it's been the worse experience ever. ANd even paying 3.5k for a laptop. 5900/rtx 3080. Stuttering. Freezes, Forget about linux.. It hangs even during installation.
Is the RAID option a hardware RAID? or are the 60€ just for the setup? I get that Ubuntu (I only checked that one) doesn't really offer a (gui) install with RAID, but I'll most likely install my favorite distro from scratch (no, not LFS, but a fresh install) so I'd have to initiate the RAID by myself anyway. Upon looking at the install options I noticed that you can choose RAID and "no OS", which doesn't really make sense to me (as in: it has to be a hardware RAID then, otherwise this isn't possible (or viable, as you can easily erase all partitions and just use the whole disk)).
I don't understand why people like notebooks with dedicated GPUs. I bought an XPS 15 a few years ago with an i5 11300H and a GTX 1050. Just the "H" CPU has a big TDP and thermal throttles a lot; but when the GPU kicks in, holy moly, it micro-freezes all the time and the performance is bad! I just want a laptop with integrated GPU, higher resolution than 1080p@60Hz, and a bit bigger than 15.6" :( For now my best candidate is the new Tuxedo Pulse 15 Gen2 because even though it has an high TDP CPU, it has a beefier cooling than my XPS despite having no dedicated GPU!
well, in my case I work with 3D and animation, so having a dedicated gpu is a must. But believe me that I suffer a lot with all you said above. I wish not having to use dedicated gpu at all.
Regarding Keyboard: my next Notebook definitely won't have a German keyboard even if I'm German. I don't blame other countries but I blame US companies making Keyboard shortcuts suck on non US layouts. I mean there's a reason why keyboard layouts differ and it's how often some letters get used in a specific language.
One major thing that's missing from your reviews are thermals. - Fan noise doesn't make sense without knowing thermals. Fans can be very quite but CPU may hit 80 degrees when you're browsing. Some may be comfortable with loud fans & lower temps, others might disagree. - Specs also don't make sense without knowing thermals. You can have a 12700h which throttles to 10300 level after 15 minutes of load. Please try to include sustained performance/stress test/temps 🙏🏻.

I love and miss the numpad that was on my 2013 hp prebook.
Get a ThinkPad as it works well with Linux and has a great keyboard.
My employer just replaced my old XPS15 with a ThinkPad P14S-2 AMD Loving having a good laptop, that has no issues with Wayland.
You should review the framework laptop. I Would love to hear your thoughts on it.
Just a question, on the min 0:37 it shows only office with the window decoration of the system. How do you set that up?
I don't know about all you guys but I need at least 5 USB ports. Otherwise, it would be very inconvenient for me to use as I would always need to bring a USB hub with me. I'm using the HP Elitebook 8760w which I bought used without a hard drive for a very nice price and I love it.
Yay sounds very good, even if it is only the adv.
why does the 14" have a higher res screen over the 16"? its an interesting choice
Since it's made of magnesium would it catch fire easily?
Definitely something to maybe save up for and maybe the next model. Unfortunately as a Canadian my wallet would get destroyed by the conversion rate from Euros.
Finally a laptop with real arrow keys again that isn't a crappy "gaming laptop"
The only thing I wish it had would be a 360 degree hinge and backlit keyboard.
Would I get the latest updates related to my slimbook hardware only if I use their OS or is it irrespective of that?
Also, OnlyOffice is very hard to configure on VPN or integrate with ownCloud/nextCloud
You should review the Powerboard Tyche laptop when it releases.
question: Does hybrid switching work?
Thanks again, and God bless,
That AZERTY keyboard layout messes with my brain just by looking at it 😵💫😵
There are other good reasons for a numpad. Some programs (eg. blender) use them as function keys. It is very annoying if you have to rebind the keys just to have a somewhat same experience.
I like a lot of things about it but is has that 1/2 way resolution either 1200p or 2400p displays please.
Is this still the laptop you would buy for yourself? How does it compare with the tuxedo infinitybook? which one would you pick?
10:53 Using a lower power charger will only affect the CPU performance if you take the bettery out, otherwise it will just charge slower.
Nope, I can confirm the laptop had a geekbench score of 2200 in multi core when charging with a low wattage USB C charger
how easy is it to get to the ssd & ram if you want to upgrade yourself?
Does anybody know why non-Apple laptops don't have a big track pad like Apple ones? Does a big track pad help in anything?
13:15 , 500 Terra Bytes of SSD ???? I want one of those! 😃
Don't we all!
Woops 🤣
@@TheLinuxEXP I wonder what the resilver time would be for a petabyte raidz of those?
Damn I got the Stellaris as well and hot damn, this slimbook is a beast. Not only is it cheaper but has better performance, feels bad.
But not too bad, the Stellaris is still an amazing laptop which I'll use for a few more years to come.
Oh yeah, the Stellaris is still amazing!!
I understand that if you switch to Linux, Nvidia might be what you already owned and it makes no sense to switch but why anyone running Linux would voluntarily sign up for this hell and pay a premium on top of it goes beyond me.
we need CUDA lol
@@ppolo12 myself i don't tend to need it on the fly in a laptop, it's best to just use a stationary pc for anything serious unless the laptop is one's only computer and they don't wanna use cloud computing, then i guess for that very, very, very limited number of people, easily less than 1% of the market, it makes sense to have nvidia in a linux laptop
Interesting brand. Two issues with their website/products
1. They don't list screen resolutions for their models AFAI can see.
2. Norwegian keyboard is not available, (understandable - we're a tiny market and Danish is pretty close)
(I would have purchased the 14in version if it has more than 1080p vertical res. My Linux resistant Asus 14in has 2880x1800px res.)
Maybe next time.
I think the 14 inch version looks even more compelling: higher resolution, bigger battery! (yes really) and it's only 1250 bucks.
I have a System76 Pangolin, bought it specifically because it came with an AMD CPU and GPU.
What a coincidence! Just a few hours ago I was looking for a new laptop.
What a coincidence! Just a few hours ago I was looking for a new Nick video
3:50 I can almost hear the thousands of screams 😂
This is a great channel.
Thanks!
5:06 i was unprepared for this 😆😆😆
This would have been the laptop I'd have purchased if only it was also convertible with stylus. I ended up getting an Asus ROG Flow x13, so now begins the effort of making it work well with Linux. So far I haven't found any Linux laptops with both a dedicated GPU and convertible form factor + stylus.
I wish we got more convertible laptops running Linux out of the box!
Thanks for sharing your experience. Can I ask your experience so far with the cooling? How loud can the fan get?
They always lose me at the Nvidia GPU xD
How does it go with DaVinci Resolve?
Can't afford it unfortunately.
Got an MSI laptop for $1000 CAD, 5800H RX6600M, 144hz.
No Nvidia for me on a Linux laptop. I’ve learned my lessons. And what about hibernation & sleep ? Does that work well ?
"F U Nvidia!" 😂
curious about this as well...
When will you upload in resolutions greater than 1080p?
Probably not soon, I'd have to buy a camera that does 4K60 and these are super expensive
Cool, you have three sponsors at the same time. There's nothing wrong with that, I'm just a little jealous.
I have one sponsor in this video, OnlyOffice. This video wasn't sponsored by slimbook or tuxedo
This is exactly the same shell as the Infinity Book Pro ?
what about those tuxedo laptops?
This looks incredibly similar to the Tuxedo Infinitybook Pro 16 Gen 7
Yeah, they use the same chassis
The number pad is super useful for anyone that has to type a lot of numbers. The number pad makes typing numbers so much easier.
I just want a laptop with integrated GPU, higher resolution than 1080p@60Hz, and a bit bigger than 15.6" :(
For now my best candidate is the new Tuxedo Pulse 15 Gen2 because even though it has an high TDP CPU, it has a beefier cooling than my XPS despite having no dedicated GPU!
Sometimes you need to be able to do graphics intensive stuff.
well, in my case I work with 3D and animation, so having a dedicated gpu is a must. But believe me that I suffer a lot with all you said above. I wish not having to use dedicated gpu at all.
Nice but no rj45 is terrible. Dont want USB Ethernet via USB garbage Realtek Ethernet. Great review!
What's your opinion on Slimbook pulling an 🍎and integrating the power button into the keyboard?
It doesn't matter in the slightest, I think
Regarding Keyboard: my next Notebook definitely won't have a German keyboard even if I'm German. I don't blame other countries but I blame US companies making Keyboard shortcuts suck on non US layouts. I mean there's a reason why keyboard layouts differ and it's how often some letters get used in a specific language.
I was wondering why you still see the numpad on laptops and now I know.
Even Me also Bought Lenovo Idealpad Lenovo Laptops i seen Frequently many models it's Having hinch problem... Lenovo , Newly Thinkpad's 😞
This does look nice though...
Ah, comment tu serais content avec le clavier Suisse alors :)
"that I should have bought" - did that also hold for the Executive 14 vs tuxedo's latest infinitybook pro 14?
I never bought any of these, so, no!
Too bad - given that they have the same basis, I'd have loved a direct comparison :)
I have 5 laptops and 3 of them have num. pads!
I would love buying a slimbook but it makes no sense for US customers. No local support and shipping costs makes it a non starter.
ohh cool
A 500TB SSD for €1500?! G'DAMN I need me one ASAP! 🤓(sorry Nick, I had to... heart you!)
