  • A day in the life of an Engineering Mechanics student (senior/4th year) at the University of Wisconsin - Madison (UW Madison). Engineering Mechanics (& Astronautics) is a degree that is similar to Mechanical Engineering but actually has some major differences. While a Mechanical Engineering degree is fairly broad and contains coursework like manufacturing processes and geometric modeling, Engineering Mechanics is more narrow in breadth, excludes manufacturing courses, but goes much deeper into topics like structural analysis, advanced dynamics & vibrations, computation, and aerospace-related material.
    Notable timestamps:
00:02:10 -- Start of Nozzle machining
00:04:59 -- Start of Engine Tuning presentation for EPD 275
00:07:28 -- Quick look at Senior Design project
00:08:42 -- Getting home / random clips of roommates
    00:10:45 -- Designing in SolidWorks
Engineering Mechanics graduates often work in job areas like:
structural engineering, materials engineering, aerospace structures, flight controls, aerodynamics, finite element analysis, automotive engineering, and more.
In this video, 4th-year undergraduate student, Connor Williams, brings the camera along with him throughout the day to show you all what it's like to be an Engineering Mechanics student in the College of Engineering at UW Madison. He starts out the day with some studying for a Heat Transfer exam, follows it up with a few hours of machining in the student machine shop (TEAM Lab), continues on to class & studying before heading to the exam, and eventually makes it home for the night.
Though this video is a pretty accurate depiction of a day in my life as a senior in engineering mechanics, there are obviously days where there's less hands-on stuff, and more pencil & paper work, and most often, tons of coding work in MATLAB and EES.
    Connor's Fall 2019 Course List:
    EMA 469 - Senior Design I
    EMA 521 - Aerodynamics
    ME 364 - Heat Transfer
    EPD 275 - Technical Presentations
ME 273 - Engineering Problem Solving with EES
    Connor's Fall 2019 Part-Time Jobs:
Instructor, UW Madison COE TEAM Lab (~5 hours / week)
Undergraduate Research Assistant, UW Madison Engine Research Center (~10 hours / week)
Filmed with a DJI Osmo Mobile 3, Google Pixel 2, and GoPro 4 Session
    Edited with "Shotcut"
    - all of which had issues throughout the making of this video, so I apologize for the glitchy video, text, and audio in some spots.
