    Both are fantastic, and I can definitely hear the difference. One of each, please, and a D-18 as well!

    When I bought my HD28 I did an A-B test of the D28 and HD28 to my own D18GE that was 16 years old and beautifully opened up. The D18GE had the sound I loved as far as volume, clarity, and bass. When I A-B’d them, the HD28 came closer to my D18GE than the standard D28, I presume due to the scalloped bracing. Thus, I bought an HD28 ! Hopefully one day my HD28 will come into its own level near my D18GE.

    I visited your store this summer and sat for an hour with that HD-28 in my hands and a stupid grin on my face:-). It's a killer guitar!
    btw. I liked the Billy Strings thing.

    I made a choice between these 2 for real. On your video the D-28 wins but in the flesh I decided on then HD-28 and after all the HD-28 is closer to the original D-28 than the current D-28 specs are.

    Loved this video thanks for making it! In future, maybe you could play the same kind of thing as it’s a back to back? So fingerstyle d28 then fingerstyle hd28 / flat pick d28 then flat pick hd28 for example. Love the sound quality tho!

    Right off the bat more sustain on the HD. It’s crispier and has a bit more depth. Both great instruments! I just think scalloping the braces makes a difference for the better. (Most of the time)

    Great comparison guys. I think it may be down to individual guitars. I was just listening, not watching, so I didn't know which was being played. When I looked, it turned out that in finger picking I preferred the D-28. I don't know if the difference was the base though. It just sounded cleaner, more resonant? (words fail me a bit). I couldn't really tell a difference with the strumming. Keep 'em coming, I love these guitar battles.

    I actually use a feeback buster in my HD28 to ‘tailor’ the low end if ‘chopping wood’ on it....but I will say, when I fingerpick, the bass content is wonderful. ;)

    If your patient you can find HD28s that are balanced really well. They typically are boomey and overpowers the treble. But 1 out of every 20 HD28s are balanced great. They are boomey AND articulate. You gotta go to stores and play ALL of them until you find that one. Might have to play 20 guitars but you will find one 👍. When you do it's really special. I played every HD28 guitar center had in two different locations to find mine. Sadly it burned up in a house fire last year and I can't afford to replace it 😭

    I would love to you compare the D-42 to the HD-28 as they are identical construction (scalloped fwd shifted), to see if there is any tonal difference or just the bling?

    •  3 роки тому +4

      I would say at the 40 series level the wood is superior than the 28. I own them and a D-45 and the sound is just richer, overall more resounding than the 28. The D-28 and HD28 are great guitars on their own but you really pay what you get for in the 40 series guitars!

    • @thefellowshipofacoustics
      @thefellowshipofacoustics  3 роки тому +2

      @ Wood grade certainly is superior and you feel that. We actually did a D41 vs a D28 and you could tell the difference!

    • @davidkyle5552
      @davidkyle5552 3 роки тому +2

      @@thefellowshipofacoustics But there is a significant tonal construction difference between those two also...D28 non-scalloped bracing vs scalloped on the 40 series...that’s why I’d love to see you do this same video with HD-28 vs D-42...both are identical construction tonally.

    Two very similar guitars and two very similar sounding guitars. Hard to tell the difference here. When finger-picking the guitars sounded the same. But when it came to flatpicking, you could definitely hear the HD 28 was slightly louder. I'm more of a 000 or a 00 person when it comes to Martins. If I had to choose between these two dreadnoughts, I would pick the HD 28 over the D 28. Mind you, and you may think I'm crazy, but I have an old 1979 Yamaha FG 335 that I think sounds better than both of them. Thanks for another good Guitar Battles. You take care and be safe.

    i mean my fairly cheap Pc monitors could not handle the HD, they started to jump on the table, and the part with the pick, much rounder bass and the midrange as well, the treble is bit swamped on the HD , but hd sounds more like vintage martins. the regular 28 sounds almost like an 18 next to it.

    It would really help if you would edit the performances so that we hear both guitars, alternating back and forth for the fingerpicking section and the flatpicking section. Otherwise, we are compelled to depend upon memory, which is not necessarily that accurate. Music Villa does this on their reviews. Check it out.

  • @jwtre

    D28 is way better from a tonal perspective. It's a beautiful tone and much more recordable. Scalloped bracing on dreadnoughts make the guitar feel more resonant in person so it has a wow factor but its kind of a gimmick because the tone is muddier and unbalanced. Also standard shifted sounds better than forward shifted which would mean that nothing beats a pre reimagined D28 that has opened up nicely. It's also a guitar that I happen to own. I have to think a lot about recording so I wouldn't buy an HD-28 over a D28.

    played too close to the bridge to give us any useful demonstration of how the instrument sounds strummed. Strum closer to the neck to get the actual tone of the instrument.

      @@thefellowshipofacoustics it's not as bad as some I've seen who demo guitars and do this, but it's close enough that it basically sounds like a "piezo." Strum where you normally do, then strum a bit closer to the neck, and tell me which produces a better, richer tone.

      For optimal volume and tone the best playing position is down the back of the rosette, ie closer to the bridge, which is pretty much what you guys are doing.
