- Donna Harui’s grandfather was running a thriving produce stand and nursery on Bainbridge Island when Executive Order 9066 set in motion the expulsion and incarceration of some 120,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans during World War II. Bainbridge Islanders were among the first targeted for removal. The Harui family was forced to abandon their land during the war, leaving their carefully tended Japanese gardens to fate.
Follow Donna Harui as she remembers and builds upon her family’s legacy, rooted deep in the soil of the Pacific Northwest. Then, across Elliott Bay in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District, learn how fourth-generation Japanese American artist Erin Shigaki uses her work to engage and educate the public on this chapter in American history. Find inspiration at the Wing Luke Museum and the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial, and join in the mission to preserve and honor stories of the past for future generations.
