Don't feel overwhelmed Stephie Dear. It took them years to get that garden in the condition it's in. Don't worry, you'll see the fruit of your labor little by little. You're doing great.

Oooohhhh... what a BEAUTIFUL garden, thank you for taking me there!! An inspiration indeed!! 😍
About the hostas and ferns, you can eat the young shoots of them both, so they are planted there for consumption, I’m sure.
And one thing about the straw, if Mummy really wants to try that in your garden, make VERY sure that it is clean straw... I used straw in my zucchini and pumpkin field last year, in the strawberry patch as well, to have less work weeding. Right. Then I had a field of corn instead... 🤪
Thank you again so much!! 🌻💚

That was such a treat. Even through the computer, I could feel the serenity of those gardens. I could almost smell the fragrance, feel the heat and hear the drone of industrious bees. No wonder this gave you so many ideas for your own gardens. If I had the money, I'd send funds for a garden designer and a month full of willing workers. But I know that even without those helpers, you will get there in your own time. What you've already accomplished at Lalande is stunning and it's exciting that there are so many projects ahead of you.

Dear Mommy, I’ve been gardening for 55 years. Here is a tip. People who keep cows and such love to find people to take the manure. I bet an ad in a local paper would find someone who will gladly deliver it to get it gone. Let the pile sit to compost before using. Then free fertilizer. I dream of coming to help you. I had a design company and I see so much potential. Even starting your own feee plants from cutting. I just made 40 roses for a hedge. It’s such fun. Ahh but per chance to dream .....I will watch from afar and send all my best wishes.

You need to get a statue of St. Fiacre, the patron saint of gardeners. He has blessed my garden this spring. Getting a landscape designer to help you with a garden plan is a great idea. When I had it done, I asked them to design the garden so I could do it is stages as my budget allowed.

I can see her mom panicking a little at the size of Stephanie's dream! LOL. Stephanie, before you go off too far with designing new gardens and beds at the chateau, please contact me. I can save you much time and heartache. I have a college degree in floriculture/crop science. I do a great deal of ornamental and vegetable gardening including in my own greenhouses. I have studied formal gardens and garden designs of Europe for 3 decades or more. That makes me older than you and younger than your mum and I will leave it at that. I do love so many European gardens and garden designs. I would be happy to get you started in the right direction in your landscaping endeavors and could also be helpful with your designs. I am in the USA but have spent time in many a garden, in the UK and I am quite familiar with the plant material and understanding which plants were popular during different time periods of history.
The walled garden at Priory of Notre Dame d'Orsan is further along in growth than your walled garden because of the raised beds (even though yours are raised a bit) and the pea gravel. The sun heats the soil of the raised beds more quickly and the pea gravel absorbs heat during the day. The natural radiant heat is released at night. The walls are tighter than at your chateau and this prevents less wind through the garden too. I noticed your walled garden can be quite windy and the soil is dry. Yes, your soil needs a great deal of amending to get the kind of growth you see at Priory of Notre Dame d'Orsan. So, both you and your mum were correct on why the garden was much further along in growth.
The windows in the hedge of this garden help create views which move you from one area of a garden to another. It's just a peek to grab your interest. A good design will draw you down a path with an arch and/or ornament at the end and still create a bit of mystery which makes you want to take the path. The best gardens have me rushing through them because I want to go here and there and everywhere. Sometimes I nearly run through them the first time through, because they are designed so well.
You were on the money about the transition between the formal garden and the natural areas. A good formal design will always transition you without a stark contrast. I do have the same feelings you have about gardens with vistas and keeping to the history of the property. It is important that a garden fit with the architecture and blend seamlessly between indoors and out. Gardens are an extension of living space.
I have two homes here. One is a farm with a simple cottage style home and my front garden is cottage style with not a blade of grass or lawn to be found. My other home is an 1889-1900 Victorian with more formal gardens than my farm. Gardens need to fit the architecture they are seen with.
The Arch hedge, I believe that is how you referred to it, was pleached hedging. Often hornbeams or beach are used for this technique. Many of the hedges in the garden are beach. They need a lot of work to keep them maintained. They need sheared several times a year.
The vegetable garden was interesting in the way they used the wattle fencing around the beds as structure and also to add age to the garden. This takes you back hundreds of years. You said this garden was the same climate and the same soil as your chateau. It may be the same climate but it is most definitely not the same soil. Soil can be quite different within just a few feet. I won't go into why. It would take too long to explain here. Understanding this is a very common mistake that gardeners make. It takes a great deal of knowledge and experience to have a beautiful garden and most hobby gardeners don't study enough to understand the science and chemistry of the soil.
This is the first time I have commented. I found your channel late one night several months ago. You kept me up all night as I watched nearly every video the first night and into the next day. I have enjoyed your journey and stories as you restore your home. Personally, I have loved the Victorian era for decades. My husband and I would pour over architectural designs of Victorian homes when we were first married. Through the years we toured Victorian homes, read books about them, and studied the time period. I love design, gardening/preserving, cooking and antiques. His hobby, which was handed down from his father, is woodworking. He enjoys both home building as well as doing all of the electrical work, as well as building fine furniture or recreating original wood trims. About a dozen years ago we bought an old Victorian with good bones and good woodwork. It needed a great deal of work. We gutted most of the plumbing and did a great deal with the electrical. Some of the original wiring was still being used in this house. I don't know how the house had not burned down because of it. It took 10 months before we could begin to move into the home and of course it still needs a lot to restore the third floor. We set out to restore the home and bring it back to the jewel it once was. We do have contractors that help out but it has been our vision, design and labor that brings this home back to life. We also went through the process to put the home on the state and national Historic Register of Homes. It is the closest thing we have to the National Trust in the UK.
If you would like some help or advice, just let me know, your home deserves beautiful gardens. I would be happy to get your started and no I do not expect payment. I just want to arm you with some of the knowledge you will need. In the meantime, I look forward to your next video.

Oh my goodness! What a fabulous, beautiful garden. Of course, La Londe's will put it shame in years to come, that goes without saying...but I agree..you do need to do some negotiating with some local farmers. Good manure will make your soil so rich and healthy that you will have the most amazing garden in all of France! As soon as this lockdown is over will send you something for your garden from WA, State.

Look into Permaculture Design if you are so inclined. I have been studying Permaculture for 8 years and it is a happy medium to learn all the little designs that work with your land and climate, and in your case, the aesthetics. My mind keeps swirling with all the designs I would like to do for your property, all the property, not just the walled garden. But take note from this priory's design how close to the building the gardens, kitchen gardens and often visited food gardens are positioned to the buildings and kitchens. Note the directions of the sun from sunrise to sunset and the directions of the gardens to make the sun fall just so. You mentioned many of the things, the raised garden beds, the straw/mulch, someone mentioned the manure in comments. As much as I would love to visit and offer my knowledge for the experience and labour, I am in Canada trying to figure this one out for myself as I would love to buy a house and land in Nova Scotia area and adapt it to a Permaculture, Regenerative Agriculture and market garden farm. WWOOF is also a site (willing worker on organic farm) that have travellers to France or already there (non-organic is also welcome). Just a suggestion. Another large French Chateau has converted their gardens and orchards, and now a winery to Permaculture Design Principals and Ethics and they too are wonderful. There are many videos on youtube of permaculture if you are interested. It is a good place to start ideas. When you get the land surveyor, ask for duplicates of the land maps from birds eye view, with measurements of distance and elevations, as that is a great starting point in designing the property. I hope this helps and good luck, I have be green with envy, it's a permaculturists dream land.

Thank you so much for this video.♡ This garden has been one of the inspirations for my own potager in Washington state, USA. The climate here in the middle of the state is similar to France. I shall be watching this video multiple times. (Also, Mummy was fabulous, as usual)♡

The potager at Villandry is another favorite. Maybe you could get Michael to help you by visiting Giverny. As an artist, he would be a natural there, and it is much closer for him to visit. ♡

manure helps a lot of this to grow..thats what you DO need, your garden will thrive after that..use the chicken manure too..it all helps..and straw is a good way to keep the moisture on the plants to stop them drying out on those hot summer months and protect against the frost too..not that i am a great gardener or anything lol

Seems there are many Chateaus for sale with their beautiful rolling countryside all around... I saw one online today that I would love to buy if circumstances would permit... you're so gifted in this ministry, Steph, you lift it to the next level. You Mom is so cute too. God bless.

What a beautiful place! My husband and I garden. One of the best things you can do to enrich soil is worm castings, mushroom compost, and wood chips. Chicken manure is great mixed into the compost with some worm casting and then place wood chips on top of everything. The chips help keep the ground moist. Watch Back To Eden gardening on UA-cam. We do this type of gardening and are very happy with our garden.
