I feel like Minho was the king of this episode! I would never expect him to be such a comedian. Before you ask, I am black, and also a Stay. I watched the entire ep and didn't see anything wrong until I looked at the comments section. I'm not familiar with the show Run Hani (besides what I've seen referenced on variety shows) but I'm sure Hyunjin didn't have any bad intentions. From what people have explained, the character he dressed up as is very popular as a meme since the show is so old. I'm only 22, I've never seen old shows like Astro Boy or Akira, but I'd know the characters when I saw them. Please stop automatically assuming that everyone everywhere will know everything there is to know about Black history. Just like plenty of americans don't know about the cartoon 'Der Fueher's Face', Hyunjin probably didn't immediately connect the connotations of the character's features. Please stop assuming the worst in people. That won't get us anywhere. Instead of canceling him, why not just simply tell him about how the character is reminiscent of a bad time in history ? This Korean character is believed to be based off black face, although it's not confirmed, it has many racist undertones which led people to believe it was made to make fun of black people, and the black face aspect comes from the fact that the character has extremely large lips, curly hair, and slightly noticeable darker skin. Although it was not in anyway Hyunjin's intention the show had said he looked like that character, which resulted in backlash. Straykids made a formal apology on their official Instagram, and addressed that they in no way accept discrimination towards anyone. I'm not familiar with the show Run Hani (besides what I've seen referenced on variety shows) but I'm sure Hyunjin didn't have any bad intentions. From what people have explained, the character he dressed up as is very popular as a meme since the show is so old. I'm only 22, I've never seen old shows like Astro Boy or Akira, but I'd know the characters when I saw them. Please stop automatically assuming that everyone everywhere will know everything there is to know about Black history. Just like plenty of americans don't know about the cartoon 'Der Fueher's Face', Hyunjin probably didn't immediately connect the connotations of the character's features. This Korean character is believed to be based off black face, although it's not confirmed, it has many racist undertones which led people to believe it was made to make fun of black people, and the black face aspect comes from the fact that the character has extremely large lips, curly hair, and slightly noticeable darker skin. Although it was not in anyway Hyunjin's intention the show had said he looked like that character, which resulted in backlash. Straykids made a formal apology on their official Instagram, and addressed that they in no way accept discrimination towards anyone. You can see the apology on @/realstraykids (Their official Instagram) just scroll down to the post of a blue sky with their signature phrase "Straykids everywhere all around the world, you make Straykids Stay"
