    Another great and accurate review Steve!
    Hey, I'm back Four months later after putting maybe 40 miles on my Olympus 4's. Altra has taken a nose dive, they just can't get it right and their customer service is bogus to boot. The fabric on the upper comes with holes already in it right on the outer part of your foot that inevitably scrapes on every plant, rock, and stick. The holes, (for breathing) make for a great spot for the tear to get started, and that's exactly what happened on my first run. And that's not all, 6 runs down the trail the top eyelets on both shoes tore out, and I wasn't yanking on my laces from the top like a kid. I tie my shoes with intention like my dad taught me. The shoe laces didn't even show any wear yet, nor did the outsoles. The Mega Grip Sole is the jam for scrambling and it lasts pretty well too. I give credit where credit is due.
    The issues that I'm having, other people are also having. Altras defects are becoming a well-known fact. My hope is as a community we can help Altra get back to their A game. We have to call these companies out on their crap. I'd rather haul a few extra grams down the trail than have to deal with their shitty custy service. I contacted warranty they said "tough luck pal". Long story longer, I just went and handled the Olympus 5's to see if they had addressed any of these issues. The eyelet material was identical and the plush soft thin upper material had even bigger holes than the 4's in the very same vulnerable area. Disappointed!

    I have owned Altra Olympus 4 and Olympus 3. My size in both has been an 8. I just bought and tried the Olympus 5 in a size 8 and from the moment I first slid my feet in a pair, the 8's were way too tight and small. I've been a size 8 in the Altra's Timp, Torin, Escalante. I did think the Olympus 4 and Olympus 3 were a little too wide and sloppy but the 5's are so much smaller. I will have to return these and try a 1/2 size larger. Just my two cents.

    • @RunMoore

      We have found it to also run a little smaller than the 4, but it now runs true to size, whereas the previous versions ran large.

    Thank you Steve, from the UK. I have just ran in my Olympus 5’s and they have transformed my whole experience of running and given me more confidence than ever. I was using the Altra Lone Peak 6 and I love that shoe so much but for the runs I do which is trail and quite lumpy under foot the Olympus felt so good. With the Lone Peaks I felt they were a bit floppy for me and I kept turning my foot over in them. I will still use them though. Having come from Inov8s which were too narrow but an excellent company, with Altra I think I have found the holy grail with the Olympus. At first I thought they were a bit clumpy, they are not. As I write this I am planning my run tomorrow. Thank you for such an insight into this shoe.

    I would suggest going up half a size (compared to the Olympus 4). I tried a pair of these new 5s and that extra heel padding pushes your foot a bit forward in the shoe. My toes were a bit too close to the front of the toebox.

    Just got a pair of these - I wear a 10.5 in the Lone Peak, got the same in the Olympus 5 - length is about the same but these feel smaller/tighter across the forefoot, not in the width as such, but in the mesh that covers the forefoot - I had to take them off after about half an hour. The LP I never notice on my feet, these I could feel, like I knew they were there. They might stretch a little with use as the mesh is pretty flexible. I might try a different lacing combination as I don’t want more length by going up another half size. The laces are actually too short to make use of the extra holes you would normally use a runners knot with. On the up side the sole is super squishy

    Nice looking shoe. I wore Olympus 3& 4. I had 4 pairs of version 4. I saw them at TRE but still not released in late Spring 2022 and they told me Fall 2022. I switched to Speedgoat 5 since I use Mach 4 on roads. I am ramping down Altra. I like the shoes but not the company so much. They need to improve a lot of things. They didn't do justice for Olympus by ramping up all the other new versions but let Olympus slide for a long time. They only care about Lone Peak and Timp. They should make a road shoe based on Olympus. It is a great design for larger runners. Just my opinion.

      I would have to say the Olympus counterparts from Hoka would be either the Stinson 6 or the Hoka Challenger 7 ATR. The Hoka Speedgoat falls more into the mid-cushion, lightweight, fast trail shoe category. The Stinson and the Challenger models both have plusher midsole experience and incorporate a wider base, which contributes to improved stability during your runs like the Altra Olympus.

    Was I wrong about my hope with this shoe? I was recommended to go to a more cushioned shoe to help with my stress pain and for my GORUCK events that will have me rucking for 12 and 24 hours.

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore  Рік тому +1

      The Olympus fits true to size, but since you are doing longer runs on the trail we recommend going half to a whole size up. If your foot is around 10.7 inches long, we would recommend going for a US size 11 or 11.5.

      It will be hard to speak about upper durability until it has been out long enough to get reviews, but the new upper definitely is more like a traditional Altra upper than the Olympus 4 and seems to be more flexible which I think will provide more give.

    How is the tongue on this version? I almost had to drop from a 50 miler due to the incredibly thin tongue in the Olympus 4 causing the laces to dig into my midfoot.

    • @RunMoore

      The Olympus is pretty wide, it may be a little much if you have a very narrow foot. The Timp has a little more of a slim fit through the midfoot, you might want to try that.

      You could get away with using the Olympus 5 Hike Mid GTS for running. We suggest using it more for walking/hiking because it is a bulky shoe. A lot of people prefer the lighter variant for runs. But that doesn't mean you can't run in the mid-top variant.

    Hi Run Moore , I am curious to know how good of the water drainage of this shoe , in my country we always cross creeks in a trail running and the water levels are mostly above the ankle height.
    PS. I notice that there are no more drainage holes at the toe cap. (There are some in the Olympus 4)

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore  2 роки тому +3

      Although the Olympus 5 doeS not have drainage holes in the toe, they did change the upper to be a much more breathable and quick-drying material. However, the Timp 4 has extensive drainage through the midsole and is a great max cushion alternative if you are looking to stick with Altra.
