When connecting to a 12V DC lead acid battery, always connect the Positive (Red) Lead first. When disconnecting remove the Negative (Black) first. Doing otherwise can induce sparks causing an explosion due to gasses emitted from the battery. Even more so when you induce an external load and cause a higher charge rate from the battery.
