Over the centuries, the history of tattooing has known very different interpretations.
Through its motifs and rituals, this very ancient art expresses the various meanings given to it by the various Pacific communities. This documentary takes a look at the various forms of tattooing performed in Pacific cultures.

That’s because it’s not just about the language, the language is the starting point of understanding the culture and traditions. Not everyone gets the pe’a or malu just because they feel like it, it’s a rite of passage and not some fashion statement. The tradition is that only certain people can have the pe’a or malu and it is earned. Ka muamua le guku/ulu oga ka ai loa le pe’a. You have to know the culture and be a part of it and not apart from it, tautua. Sadly the culture is being watered down due to the lack of knowledge being passed on to the next generation. Now everyone thinks anyone can get it just because, but that’s not the case. Language is the biggest barrier that people struggle with and so they think it’s unnecessary to even learn it but once one learns the language one is able to truly understand the culture and who they are. Believe me I’m no expert in Samoan language or culture so I’m trying to learn as much as I can now. Alofa aku.
