this actually helped me in baseball. i almost tore my rotator cuff diving wrong but this helped me learn to dive properly. thanks brodie! p.s. hows the knee?
@fr0sty Now very good point. Here is the thing. I wanted for this video to show just the basics and the safest way to layout. If you actually watch me layout i do land on my side a lot because that gives you an extra inch or two on reach which is crucial. However, unless you have built up strength in your shoulders you can really injure yourself. So stick with this and when I post the Advanced Layout Vid...take a look at that.
Great vid, this is true. I never realized it before, but when you see vids of guys doing lay out D's out of nowhere and stuff, that takes more than just energy and willingness to do it, there is a pretty technical part of it. The practice helps.
This is exactly how to do it. I've been playing Ultimate for 35 years and I yesterday dislocated my shoulder for the first time because I over-rotated onto my side. I FORGOT HOW TO LAYOUT! > also I layout on my shoulders a lot, but I make sure to focus on strengthening them in the gym to allow them to not get banged up as much. Laying out onto your shoulder likely won't work over age 40. Keep landing with weight distributed on hips and chest.
You can prevent this. Somewhat counter intuitively, the faster you're running, the less it will hurt. You are getting the wind knocked out of you because of too much vertical force (you jump up and come down hard instead of converting that energy to sliding on the ground). You can avoid this by jumping out (parallel to the ground) more so than jumping up
This weekend at my baseball tournament I was playing CF and I got a chance to dive for a ball and I remember this vid and i worked. First thing that went through my mind was brodiesmith no joke so thanks.
That are some real helpful tips! this looks quite smooth.. after my last layout i had a sort of whiplash thing for some days. guess it´s because I tend to land sideways? Thanks!
Love the video Brodie! I'm also very excited to be playin with one of your friends,Cody Johns! Hes taught me so much and I'm gonna put a video up of him and I meetin and talking for the first time, please watch thank you!!
i totally agree on the mentality part, you have to be fully commited and ready to lay out or else you'll just hesitate and the opportunity passes. I also think right as you layout somewhat lead with your chest, like how sprinters do at the end of a race at hte finish line... to me it seems it gives that extra effort you might need, although it might take away your reach
Dude that flick you did at the end was crazy. Tutorial? Me and my friend try something similar just for fun, but that looks like it could actually be used in a game.
@11POHLMI The cleats I'm wearing in this vid are the Carbon Flywire. In my opinion the best cleat out right now for Ultimate Frisbee...what are u talking about? Cleats from another video of mine?
@steelerfan786 really focus on using your hands/arms to break your fall and then slide from your chest down to your stomach...also I layout on my shoulders a lot, but I make sure to focus on strengthening them in the gym to allow them to not get banged up as much. Def want to do some weight lifting training if you will be hitting the ground from 4 feet up
One thing I think worth mentioning, this should go without saying but I see a lot of kids making this mistake. If you watch brodie's dive in slowmo you see that he starts to get low before the dive in order to propel himself forwards and slide when he lands(Like a slip n' slide) instead of jumping and slamming on to the ground like a pancake. This will make your jump maximize it's distance and also reduce the impact.
It's not about whether the disc is upside down or not, it's about your hand. You can't stabilize and absorb the impact from hitting the ground with your hand upside down nearly as well as you can with it the right way.
i love layouts. my arms go numb from the shoulder down from time to time, and i've got the shoulder strength of a bedridden 89 year old great grandmother in certain ranges, but i made some brilliant blocks and catches. if anyone has footage of vancouver down on jericho beach in the early 90's...
Great videos, I've watched a bunch tonight and this one as well as all the others have been really useful. I'm really looking forward to practicing tomorrow when the sun is out. Also, hot damn! You are really fit! ;)
this type of dive will keep your hands in front so you can catch the disc. A volleyball dive with a disc in one of your hands won't work. Plus, you generally don't slide on grass as well as floor (rain-slick grass the exception).
Brodie, What kind of floor, ground is it? Is it better to layout in the short grass? Artificial ground? Because most of Time i'm waiting for the rain ^^
Brodie, I have been trying this and when I layout to catch the disc, I am always landing on my catching hand's thumb and a few months ago I sprained my thumb doing this, do you have any tips or advice for this? Cheers
Brodie, I'd like to know how you learned to layout. I didn't have a mentor or instructional documents to guide me along. Its easy to say I learned the hard way. I'd like to know how you learned to bid.
1st of all wasn't exactly a spike. 2nd of all his practice layout is pretty damn impressive, and 3rd of all, why is it such a big deal if he is having fun I wouldn't have cared if he spiked it into the ground and celebrated. You can't judge a person on that when they put so much effort into doing this guide to help ultimate players. don't be a troll!
Took a disc out in the rain, and cut up my forearms doing this... Is that normal? Also, it's been a couple days, and my ribs are still sore. Do they just need to get used to laying out?
Nah, I play ultimate frisbee, and u will prolly not get used to laying out but you will get used to the pain. It isn’t very good for your back but it is very impressive when you do it :)
I have been playing ultimate for two years going on three and I have never dived because I popped my shoulder playing soccer during my first year of playing ultimate and I have been scared ever since to dive. Would this help me with my fear and make me more confident in diving?
hey Brodie, when I layout either indoors or outdoors I always find my right hip seems to take the flak even though I land on my chest, i end up having massive friction burns on the right side of my body. is it from a lack of core strength or having boney hips?
I always wondered why you can't lay out like a beast except in a game. You see shoulder high lay outs in games but someone prob couldn't do that while practicing layouts.
the most difficult to overcome is the fear in your heart
a0933082185 why doesn't this have more likes? Lol. That's so true because once you overcome that fear, you can do it again and again out of habit
8 years later and this is still the best layout tutorial.
13 years later and it still is
Yes 🎉🎉
Yessir
This is the best instruction I've seen about 1) how to get comfortable diving, 2) how to catch and turn the disc as you dive.
this actually helped me in baseball. i almost tore my rotator cuff diving wrong but this helped me learn to dive properly. thanks brodie!
p.s. hows the knee?

This is just a great tutorial. Period. Hands down lol gonna try to use this for our school team practices :) thnx brodie
Great vid, this is true.
I never realized it before, but when you see vids of guys doing lay out D's out of nowhere and stuff, that takes more than just energy and willingness to do it, there is a pretty technical part of it. The practice helps.
@Zackthefireman Def going to make both of those! Stay tuned my friend
Keep landing with weight distributed on hips and chest.
how is this done without crushing nut?
Stephen Strain Your chest takes most of the impact
I find i get the wind knocked out of me when i layout. Is this just me or does it happen to others as well
You can prevent this. Somewhat counter intuitively, the faster you're running, the less it will hurt. 1:23 this is my position when I am lazy
Me too 👍🏻
This weekend at my baseball tournament I was playing CF and I got a chance to dive for a ball and I remember this vid and i worked. First thing that went through my mind was brodiesmith no joke so thanks.
Had to go back to some old school videos after that epic proposal!!!
It’s been a while but this is a great video, I’m playing ultimate in my school and I’m trying to learn to lay out.
Ive been waiting for this for an extremely long period of time.
thanks for the video, learned a lot as someone who consider to be good layouter.
Cheers from Israel
@thatguyjevans Yea im thinking of the best way to get suggestions from you guys all in the same place.
Man, you the best. Your tips help beginners and the rest above refine their skills(: keep going man!
Haha I don't think that many of Cody followers have seen this!
cody and brodie, the ultimate chads
That are some real helpful tips! this looks quite smooth.. after my last layout i had a sort of whiplash thing for some days. guess it´s because I tend to land sideways? Thanks!
@juamachin I use iMovie...i freeze framed that part of the video and put the title up
thank you for the vids it helped me a lot for my ultimate team and we made it to the championship!!!! i showed all my team members 2.
"Layout for profile pic" FTW! LMAO. Nice tutorial by the way! Thanks bro! I'm learning a lot! :)
Love the video Brodie! I'm also very excited to be playin with one of your friends,Cody Johns! Hes taught me so much and I'm gonna put a video up of him and I meetin and talking for the first time, please watch thank you!!

I miss u in this sport😫❤️❤️
Dude that flick you did at the end was crazy. Tutorial? Me and my friend try something similar just for fun, but that looks like it could actually be used in a game.
nice video bro..
i was searching for this long time, I'll try this on our next training...thanks!
Does this not make you itchy?
If someone had taught me how to lay out this way it would have saved a lot of pain down the line
@3nZoTheKing nope! but sometimes it just happens and you cant really do much about it but take the next point off lol
@11POHLMI The cleats I'm wearing in this vid are the Carbon Flywire. In my opinion the best cleat out right now for Ultimate Frisbee...what are u talking about? Cleats from another video of mine?
i've done this without knowing what its called or how to properly do it, now i know how to do it better!
these tips are great and i play lacrosse too and i love how brodie is wearing the nike zooms xD
@NoTimeToBlink probably be in the how to catch video not sure though
Sick throw at the end
@steelerfan786 really focus on using your hands/arms to break your fall and then slide from your chest down to your stomach...also I layout on my shoulders a lot, but I make sure to focus on strengthening them in the gym to allow them to not get banged up as much. Badass low release skipper in between the legs after the layout at the end
Cheers for this mate! I really appreciate it!
@brodiesmith21 thanks brodie, i'm definitely going have to hit the wieghts this summer so i'm ready for the college season next year!
I loved the under the legs bounce to the camera guys shin at the end.
Layout for the profile pic! lesson learned.
as a bigger guy (being heavier) this will help me without hurting myself
@thatguyjevans thanks for the advice!
It's not about whether the disc is upside down or not, it's about your hand. You can't stabilize and absorb the impact from hitting the ground with your hand upside down nearly as well as you can with it the right way.
THIS LOOKS DUMB, BUT IS REALLY EFFECTIVE!!
THANK YOU!!
I ASKED MY PARENTS FOR A DISK AND THEY GAVE ME AN XBOX
(-_\)
@colbrio1 correct
@fr0sty We are making a schedule of vids.
I just watched a man repeatedly fall on the ground for five minutes and I valued every second.
@proteincheese I don't think that does anything for you besides maybe add style points.
This helped a lot thanks!
@brodiesmith21 souunndsss sickk! are you gunna put some shoulder strengthening exercise in the advance or is everything up in the air?
It's really easy to pop out your shoulder if you layout on your side. This way there is little danger of injury.
Okay, will try this :) Thank you heaps
some of this can even help for baseball!!!
@guitar14guitar wait what throw?
You need to practice standing up man, you keep falling over
@mattyfattee i think its more proper/less injury to lay out on your chest, but if u think about it you have more reach when you layout on your side
yup nease alum!
@ekkjamper76 Thailand! LETS GO! congrats
when i try to layout i always fk myself up on the landing, i think this is going to help. thanks! great video
@brodiesmith21 I have more suggestions for bro tips. Can you make a video on how to read the Frisbee? Or is this going to be included in How to catch?
Hey Brodie! Any tip that can help us to layout indoors?
i love layouts. my arms go numb from the shoulder down from time to time, and i've got the shoulder strength of a bedridden 89 year old great grandmother in certain ranges, but i made some brilliant blocks and catches. if anyone has footage of vancouver down on jericho beach in the early 90's...
Great videos, I've watched a bunch tonight and this one as well as all the others have been really useful. I'm really looking forward to practicing tomorrow when the sun is out. Also, hot damn! You are really fit! ;)
tried the babystep into the layout...did not slide at all. I assume this has to be done on grass that isn't completely dry or on turf?
this type of dive will keep your hands in front so you can catch the disc. A volleyball dive with a disc in one of your hands won't work. Plus, you generally don't slide on grass as well as floor (rain-slick grass the exception).
can you make another video showing how to practice high bidding and positioning to layout on defense?
I think I have a pretty decent layout.... it's just that now I'm playing on an astroturf field. Getting a nice little perma-roadrash thing going.
nice catch
Hey so I can do a Volleyball dolphin dive really well, so would you suggest that I just dolphin dive or perfect this type of dive?
Brodie, What kind of floor, ground is it? Is it better to layout in the short grass? Artificial ground?
Because most of Time i'm waiting for the rain ^^
Any tips on what material your clothes should be made of so they don't get ruined when you do this?
@standens2 Try wearing compression shorts! They hold your junk in place so they wont be jangling and get smashed hahah.
Brodie, I have been trying this and when I layout to catch the disc, I am always landing on my catching hand's thumb and a few months ago I sprained my thumb doing this, do you have any tips or advice for this?
Cheers
Maybe keep your arms out and fingers up
@@wer4824 little late
Brodie, I'd like to know how you learned to layout. I didn't have a mentor or instructional documents to guide me along. Its easy to say I learned the hard way. I'd like to know how you learned to bid.
Spiking on a practice layout! Cool! Brodie do you spike your toothbrush after you've brushed your teeth in the morning?
1st of all wasn't exactly a spike. 2nd of all his practice layout is pretty damn impressive, and 3rd of all, why is it such a big deal if he is having fun I wouldn't have cared if he spiked it into the ground and celebrated. You can't judge a person on that when they put so much effort into doing this guide to help ultimate players. don't be a troll!
I love you brodie, your my idol
@brodiesmith21 you sir are correct...
Saw that shirt and was like, HE KNOWS TEBOW!
you broke both thumbs?
Does it help to left your legs up as you layout? I see some players do that
Hey Brodie, do u recommend this method for people like me whom had dislocated my shoulder which is my master hand?
A how to sky vid would be sick
It's Cody johns!!!
Exercise. Train the muscles. In this video, Brodie is pretty buffed.
haha "dont layout like a noob. layout for the profile pic"
That's actually very important tutorual
1:23
@brodiesmith21 so can this work for other sports besides, ultimate Frisbee?
@L0kide1337 Bro Tips on how to Spike! I like it!
@brodiesmith21 He's talking about that awesome through-the-legs-ground-bounce-spike. Yeah. That one.
I always wondered why you can't lay out like a beast except in a game. You see shoulder high lay outs in games but someone prob couldn't do that while practicing layouts.
Brodie, Is it ok that the disc touches the ground when doing a layout? are there turnovers? pls. Reply Advance Thanks.
what kinds of cleats should i use for ultimate?
