    This is the best instruction I've seen about 1) how to get comfortable diving, 2) how to catch and turn the disc as you dive.

    this actually helped me in baseball. i almost tore my rotator cuff diving wrong but this helped me learn to dive properly. thanks brodie!
    p.s. hows the knee?

    @fr0sty Now very good point. Here is the thing. I wanted for this video to show just the basics and the safest way to layout. If you actually watch me layout i do land on my side a lot because that gives you an extra inch or two on reach which is crucial. However, unless you have built up strength in your shoulders you can really injure yourself. So stick with this and when I post the Advanced Layout Vid...take a look at that.

    Great vid, this is true.
    I never realized it before, but when you see vids of guys doing lay out D's out of nowhere and stuff, that takes more than just energy and willingness to do it, there is a pretty technical part of it. The practice helps.

    This is exactly how to do it. I've been playing Ultimate for 35 years and I yesterday dislocated my shoulder for the first time because I over-rotated onto my side. I FORGOT HOW TO LAYOUT!
    > also I layout on my shoulders a lot, but I make sure to focus on strengthening them in the gym to allow them to not get banged up as much.
    Laying out onto your shoulder likely won't work over age 40. Keep landing with weight distributed on hips and chest.

      Stephen Strain Your chest takes most of the impact

      @gavinlee7185 9 років тому +6

      I find i get the wind knocked out of me when i layout. Is this just me or does it happen to others as well

    • @jb17415
      @jb17415 9 років тому +19

      You can prevent this. Somewhat counter intuitively, the faster you're running, the less it will hurt. You are getting the wind knocked out of you because of too much vertical force (you jump up and come down hard instead of converting that energy to sliding on the ground). You can avoid this by jumping out (parallel to the ground) more so than jumping up

    i totally agree on the mentality part, you have to be fully commited and ready to lay out or else you'll just hesitate and the opportunity passes. I also think right as you layout somewhat lead with your chest, like how sprinters do at the end of a race at hte finish line... to me it seems it gives that extra effort you might need, although it might take away your reach

    @steelerfan786 really focus on using your hands/arms to break your fall and then slide from your chest down to your stomach...also I layout on my shoulders a lot, but I make sure to focus on strengthening them in the gym to allow them to not get banged up as much. Def want to do some weight lifting training if you will be hitting the ground from 4 feet up

  • @nfsgt0
    @nfsgt0 12 років тому

    One thing I think worth mentioning, this should go without saying but I see a lot of kids making this mistake. If you watch brodie's dive in slowmo you see that he starts to get low before the dive in order to propel himself forwards and slide when he lands(Like a slip n' slide) instead of jumping and slamming on to the ground like a pancake. This will make your jump maximize it's distance and also reduce the impact.

    It's not about whether the disc is upside down or not, it's about your hand. You can't stabilize and absorb the impact from hitting the ground with your hand upside down nearly as well as you can with it the right way.

  • @vballgodc
    @vballgodc 11 років тому

    this type of dive will keep your hands in front so you can catch the disc. A volleyball dive with a disc in one of your hands won't work. Plus, you generally don't slide on grass as well as floor (rain-slick grass the exception).

    • @xxYourself42xx

      1st of all wasn't exactly a spike. 2nd of all his practice layout is pretty damn impressive, and 3rd of all, why is it such a big deal if he is having fun I wouldn't have cared if he spiked it into the ground and celebrated. You can't judge a person on that when they put so much effort into doing this guide to help ultimate players. don't be a troll!
