wow!!! the depths of some of those reliefs are crazy!!!!!! i don't understand the grapes hanging lower than the front board/facade on the balcony however; how was this achieved? was the relief carved then the board itself shaped/cut? You sir are a master of your craft; stunning work that will be around for centuries ^.^
@nbeckste Yes, they are all different types. The woods I use most for relief carving are alder, genuine mahogany, incense cedar, and cherry. A couple of these are butternut.
Hi Ron! I just checked out some of the carved doors on your website. Incredible! Would you mind sharing what tools you use for beginners like me? Do you use a dremel? If so, which model do you recommend (if there's more than one...) Thank you!!
I determine the depth of the carving by the design and how prominent I want the relief to be. I determine the depth of each layer by visualizing the layers in my head.
I always wanted to carve in either low relief or high relief my master carver teacher pass away before he could teach me this type of carving, may i ask what type of wood do you suggest to carve in relief. I recently turn a wooden chalice bottom base i like to carve in relief but im stuck on which way to go high or low relief.Remember this will be my first piece, any suggestions would be very helpful.OH the wood is butternut on the base planning on carving the 12 deciples thanks
The wood depends on the final look you are going for and whether you are using edge or power tools. Lighter wood tends to show the detail better but some people like the look and durability of darker and harder woods. Butternut is pretty soft and is pretty good for using with edge tools but not so good for power carving. As far as low versus high relief, again, you are the artist so let your muse make the decision.
Some people will pay. It's taken me many years to develop a following where I can get paid a living wage for my work. It's hard to say whether a living wage is enough for the effort I put into my work. Some painters and sculptors in other media command very high prices for their work. That doesn't happen very often with woodcarvers.
Hi Joe, Yes, I sell all of my carvings. Most are commission pieces. I can design and carve most anything you want. Visit my website to see more. carvedbyramsey.com

I add wood onto the surface to create the effect where the grapes hang below the edge.

So Beautiful. The thing is people don't want to pay the price to real artists. What is your comment on this. Well done, I love your work.

What tool(s) do you use to buff/sand to a finish without damaging the more delicate imprints? Thanks in advance - very fine work.

I make my own patterns by making a rough sketch and blowing it up to full size. I then make adjustments as I go.
Exquisite work.
Excellent....!!!!!!
I use either 3M Scotch-Brite™ Radial Bristle Discs or Klingspor Mini Mops.
