As someone who played Dungeonborne extensively, I do agree the combat is still clunky a bit underwhelming. However, theres a lot that Ironmace can learn from its competitor already: 1) Intuitive Lobby UI that is easy to use and navigate as well as perform actions in 2) They had a functional market before DaD and I still believe it was better implemented in Dungeonborne 3) Gem crafting 4) Way better communication - dedicated CM force, specific channels for announcements/events that were respected and used (no diving into general chat or having to follow a specific streamer to know what the heck is going on), community events with tangible rewards (steam gift cards etc), quests and new player systems 5) While considered less hardcore, it also brought in a lot more ppl that were turned off from DaD 6) larger, more creative map design 7) Functioning Arena with no gear loss that was on a timer to affect the playerbase less. 8) Proper marketing strategies - trailers, events, community participation, being part of a Fest 9) stat thresholds opening up new abilities/possibilities for classes 10) easily identifiable gear as you upgrade when looking at someone (no inspecting needed) and there's probably more im forgetting
crazy how all this basic ass shit that any studio worth anything could figure out and get done no problem is something that alludes ironmace. I pointed this out to some of my friends and they didn't think anything of it, but the crafting system literally just... dying armor a bold color? absolutely crazy that *this* level of polish is ok to DaD players.
While I agree with a lot, I hope something like gem crafting is never a thing. You say it was more identifiable but that is false while you also include gem crafting. Gear stats can shift wildly due to it. It even unlocks abilities for your character that are not always accessible once you break a certain stat threshold. I do think DaD can learn SOME things like the level designs and company communication, but Dungeonborne still has a very lackluster and restricted combat system. Largely thanks to its cumbersome movement and animations. (Something I do think they could fix at some point but this late in development seems unlikely) I would love more competition though. And I would also like to say I am unsure of the size comparison between the two and where they pulled their money to create these games. We only know Ironmace's story.
@@professionalfire3902lmao were do you get the idea you “dye” armour in dnd a color? You literally craft it out of the metal you mine in the games different maps and dungeons and the higher the tier the metal and armour the higher the stats will be lmao I fkn wish I could dye my armour 😂you ain’t even play dark for a day bro
A competitor can copy/paste as much from the original as it wants. If it succeeds or not, depends on whether they make the OG experience even better and iron out it's flaws, or if it brings fresh wind in form of new ideas. I don't see dungeonborne doing that. Despite DaD's minor flaws like clunky UI/Lobby for example, i have a major concern with DaD. The Maps. Usually i prefer handcrafted maps over procedurally generated ones. Not so for DaD. In the playtests, when everyone was new to the game, it was much more fun. Nowadays people find the perfect built and current meta within a day and share them with the community. This cannot be prevented and that's okay. But having lionhead chests, bosses, etc always in the same location takes away the tension and exploration out of the game. DaD's gridroom system would be perfect for procedural generation. resulting in much more fun and fairness for everyone. they wanted a DnD-like dungeon crawl experience. but DnD isn't fun if you play the same 3 prebuilt adventures for years. But maybe that's just me.
I think calling it a "knock-off" at this point is a little disingenuous. They've obviously continued working on the game, and it's distinct enough to merit a little more respect in my opinion. I haven't played it, but from what you've shown in your video.. It looks like it's coming along nicely. The graphics look nice, and the monsters seem well-animated. I think I'll play next playtest (whenever that is).
I loved DB personally. It was a ton of fun to play. I have over 2k hours in DaD and playing dungeonborne was different for sure but still, for a play test, I think they are heading in the right direction.
A pve focused dungeon extraction game would be awesome to see however it seems like the game developers working in this genre are just too focused on the pvp aspect. I think it'd be so fun to fight a multitude of different mobs where you must have the knowledge of their abilities to fight them effectively. This would also help the game developers to rid themselves of the dark and darker copy cat name.
That hand picked comment is hilariously fake, or pandering to win $50 (if that prize even existed, which I doubt). It’s hilarious they gassed up saying wow you guys are amazing writers: “this game not same game as other game. This game different game”
DaD had such potential but i really think they've suffered from not being on Steam. It means they only receive feedback and statistics from hardcore players, and not the regular type of player. I believe this is also why EFT suffers from terrible balancing and QoL issues, even after 8 years of supposed development.
Dungeonborne looked really cool until I played it. Feels jank as hell. Not to mention it also has the piece of shit RNG affix system so it's just as bad if not worse than dark and darker when it comes to that
On stream a few days ago grimmz was basically saying dark and darker is just a placeholder that he can play in the meantime while dungeonborne is in development 💀💀💀
There was also a game called Greed is Good. It was an asset flip, don't get me wrong. It reeked of a rugpull and that's what they eventually did, shortly after being released. The thing is that the game was actually pretty good and fun. I'm not saying this is going to be the same, but it's likely.
There is one thing that gives me hope that this game will be better than dark and darker and its what they said about how the combat should be "What Sets Our Weapons Apart? In short, our design philosophy ensures that each weapon offers distinctive characteristics that enhance both tactical depth and combat enjoyment. Fights shouldn't be a left-click spam, we want every duel to feel like a dance of death, where players must utilize gap closers, light and heavy attacks, blocking, counter-attacks, character skills, and even map knowledge to outplay their opponent." if they actually do stick to that i think it will be amazing
yeah they released without any sounds as they said the sounds weren't developed yet. My guess is that they wanted to get this out as fast as possible to compete with Dark and Darker's test branch released of the Druid
The lack of creativity is what I've pointed at in Dungeonborne since the first day. It isn't trying hard enough to separate itself from DnD. I think that that is the reason why it's always going to be "that DnD clone" or whatever. Lackluster release teaser of a panther after the Druid test server release is in line with the Dungeonborne release and screams a lack of creativity, ingenuity and most importantly, longevity (imo)
Its worth noting that during their first open play test a couple months ago, Dungeonborne had more concurrent players and viewers from streams than Dark and Darker. Of course, people are trying out the new thing, but it bodes well for Dungeonbornes future if they continue in the right direction. A lot of people have bias towards DaD, just like many other games out there where competitors try to make a similar game, just like whats happening with Tarkov, Grey Zone, and Arena breakout. But this is how things become better. As you stated, competition and people expanding on ideas and figuring out what works and doesnt. I played the playest for Dungeonborne, and I had fun. It surely needs more work, but the aesthetic, QoL, animations, and UI are all there. If its not a cash grab in desguise, I believe it will be a serious competitor to Dark and Darker.
I played both playtest and the game needs a lot of work. But to be fair to the team they came a long way from the first to the second playtest. Features like an auction house was in their game before IM which is a bit laughable. Personally I think Dungeonborne devs are a bit more in touch with what gamers want and imo seem more organized than IM. Like for example they patched one of the classes pretty quickly when people complained it was over powered. Ranged damage in dark and darker is still an issue and they never address it hard enough. I’m a long time DnD fan, even have the limited wooden mug. But I’m excited to see what mithril studious is cooking and I’m actually rooting for them. I don’t like ironmace, I lost trust in them months ago. they had a great idea but executed poorly. Hopefully these guys can take that idea and execute it better.
I personnaly really enjoyed playing dungeonborne with some friend in extraction and in arena i also enjoyed the combat system and the fact that the pve was less hard but still interesting however i do understand why a lot of people dislike it because compared to the polished DaD it can look unfinished and a simple rip off however if they played the game more than 2 games of the first gamemode they would have realised that it wasnt
im on the line of quitting dark and darker. all my friends already have, and every update is a big let down. so idk, dungeon might be a knock off but as of this second, it seems alot more promising then dnd as a whole.
Dungeonborne has potential for sure , but it needs a lot more time to cook . Love the map design, but man did the gameplay feel … weightless and clunky .
I like dungeonborne more aesthetically, the way the weapons work and the magic looks feels a lot more idk, fantasy? to me, and maybe that's just budget lost because dark and darker isn't on steam anymore and they had alot of issues, but that was one problem I always had with dark and darker, it felt clunky and lack of the fantasy aspect other than (haha funny magic & class) it didn't come off as something mystical like Baldur's gate, it feels too monochrome and lacks real identity with its classes, which is what I hope dungeonborne will do better, to make ironmace step it up a little. its not overstimulating, and it isn't all over the place it could genuinely BE the better dark and darker if handled correctly, but its all up to player perspective and views, what nexon did to dark and darker kind of left a permanent stain on the game and I'm hoping epic games can pick that up and help them really run for it.
The Dungeonborne weapon and skill feel is so horrible. There's alot of cool things in it but it just feels blegh to play. I'd love gem crafting in Dark and Darker but we need some balance changes to support that.
I thought Dungeonborne was a pretty awful experience. Also, Why are all the Dark and Darker style games stuck on just 2 abilities to use? Heck, gimme 3 or a whole hotbar full like an MMO.
I own one of the dark and darker tankards. I was so hyped for the game. Sadly, the games combat is super trash. Its not skill based in the least. My experience as an 80str barbarian was just absurd. The only thing i expressed was a single attack that dropped damn near every player and all their loot at my feet. People share pictures of their loot more often than clips of outplaying enemies. So basically dark and darker became a game that rewards those that put in the most time, not those that are the most skilled. Which is why it will always stay as a tiny niche community game.
That game is more bland, unbalanced and boring it makes dark and darker look more enjoyable got bored after trying it out for like an hour the only people that are gonna play that game constantly are the delusional and the coping people it really is just a shit knock off no where near rival level even the crafting system is worse I’d rather watch paint dry at that rate

6) larger, more creative map design
7) Functioning Arena with no gear loss that was on a timer to affect the playerbase less.
8) Proper marketing strategies - trailers, events, community participation, being part of a Fest
9) stat thresholds opening up new abilities/possibilities for classes
10) easily identifiable gear as you upgrade when looking at someone (no inspecting needed)
