**Before commenting, PLEASE READ:** Some of you have been asking why I throw away those plastic bags/tear them. Unfortunately they aren't really reusable for anything else. As a maker who gets thousands of pins at a time per shipment, the bags become useless really fast, and hurt to open individually as I already get wrist pain. I always reuse packaging from other products but these unfortunately one thing that most makers toss since they can't be used for much, and are really thin and flimsy. Usually they're very paper-thin and tear easily. :( They also can't be sent back to my manu since they don't want them back, and like I said many rip/stretch out when being openness due to thinness. The baggies also help to protect the pins that go straight into my inventory storage, and prevent them from scratching against one another or damaging due to humidity. Graphic design 101, anything on a screen is done in RGB anything in print or paint or dye is done in CMYK so basically they dont translate to the same color Adobe Illustrator is one program you can design that will transfer from rgb to cmyk.
Because enamel is baked after being applied to the metal mould of the pin, it doesn't always match the digital version of the color irl. The Pantone book is the only surefire way to get the color you really want.
Graphic Design 201, Pantone is not CMYK. CMYK uses a blend of pigments to produce a desired color whereas Pantone produces a single set color which provides significantly more control for the designer since each machine will blend colors slightly differently but pantone is a set color regardless of the machine. There are also some colors which simply cannot be produced in CMYK.

That Pantone booklet looks like a fantastic tool for anyone doing digital art for things such as stickers or for designers who get custom fabric prints. I had to splurge for an X-Rite ColourMunki display calibration tool and used NEC monitor just to ensure the MOST color accuracy for my digital artwork between creation and print. Was bloody expensive at the time but a lifesaver since it meant fewer issues with commissions where customers would say 'oh, why is this yellow shirt green? This teal is violet!'. Also, I learned to never depend on native screen color calibrations to be the same because different manufacturers have WILDLY different standards.

Watching you and many other pin maker's videos has been suuuper helpful about the process and i hope to open up my own shop someday featuring enamel pins, acrylic keychains, prints and more!! It's so exciting to think about the future I can make and have with information such as this video, awesome job!
My question is, in the designs you send your manufacturer, is it necessary or ever a problem that you add the gray/gradation in your art for the metal shine? Like i see you have some of the black lines made to look like they're shiny as the pin will be, but is that something you have to do when sending in the designs? Or has it ever caused confusion with the manufacturer? (seen at 8:07 in the video) Also, Can you share, not who the manufacturer is, but what correspondences look like with them throughout the process, and just a little bit more on how that business side of it goes? This video is very informative on how to design pins in general, and how the product will arrive, but it feels like it's missing the details of what happens after you send your designs to the manufacturer, and before your pins arrive. Do they send you test pins for approval? Do they have any follow up questions? What kind of things do you say in your correspondence to get the conversation started, and communicate what you want aside from the design spec sheet? Knowing about the Pantone color booklet is super helpful, and knowing in advance that pin makers usually charge per color is great, as well as the plastic backing remover tool you showcased, But I'm definitely curious to get more of the details on how to deal with the manufacturer, since that is the area that I can't know or figure out without experience or asking someone who has experience. Thanks so much in advance! Really loved seeing all your cute pin designs in the video too.
From what I looked up, it'd depend on your manufacturer. You'll have to contact several of them because the way they work will depend, as well as the price. I saw that they usually sell by pins of 100 as a minimum as it's more convenient for them, but they'll probably send you 1 pin first to see if it's all good for mass manufacturation. If they don't do that, then they're quite unprofessionnal imo. If you want to know who she works with, then-- she'll probably never answer. It seems that pin artists keep it a secret, I'm not sure why. Maybe because if too many people start using the same manufacturer as them, it'd make more competition? Or maybe the manufacturer will become too busy and they won't be able to order in as large supplies anymore? I have no clue, since I don't do pins myself. From another video I saw, the artist said you can't shade your pin as the black lines are what is used to contain the color. Seeing how appleminte DOES do shading, I'd guess she found a very good manufacturer. Even more of a reason to not share it around I guess. On that note, I guess she does that lighting on her drawings because she finds it more aesthetic and her manufacturer is fine with it, because they have been working together for long enough.
Darn, I was hoping to find out a good manufacturer, haha. I already knew "how" to set it up, just finding a "good" manufacturer for a reasonable wholesale price is a little difficult. (Not just for pins, but most things)
@@lazer2521 why though? It doesn't cut into the individual's sales at all, it's not like I'm taking her files and selling them myself. There's no reason to keep the company private really.
@@Shadows_Inc It’s smth I don’t like myself, but it’s been said that it’s mainly bc if more ppl start using the same manufacturer, the lower the quality gets
I read the pinned comment of course and saw a lot of comments about the mini ziplock bags, it is indeed useless, imagine creating thousand pins and having a lot of this waste BUT! Maybe a suggestion, is in your packaging just include the empty mini bag, Like an extra. As you said you don't take out your pins until they are ready to be shipped/used/make cause this protects them from being scratched. In the same way you give your customers some "extra" protection. Maybe they can use it to store too if they do have collections of pins maybe. It doesnt hurt to include the mini bag, not very heavy and it's easy to put in any small package. Again this is just a suggestion. Just yknow, instead of just throwing everything maybe some will find it useful despite being thin and flimsy. I enjoyed your video btw! Very cool, thank you for sharing.
Is there a pre-authorization from the owner needed to use a licensed character for the pin? I’ve seen many pin makers use licensed characters and none have answered this question.
thank you for this video ive been wanting to make enamel pins for a while but wasnt sure if there was some special set up you had to do for it. now if only i could get myself to draw things, ive been stuck in a rut for a while. ur art is really cute and wonderful.

Great primer video! I kind of fell down a rabbit hole this morning with enamel pins, as I was looking into creating hard enamel keychains. I've got some strong designs that are doing well on other products and I think they would translate well into this format. Quick newbie question please, if I'm using only 3 colors in a design and the main one is black, how do I indicate that I want the separations of color to have metal lines? Thank you so much!
i think the idea of making pins is really cool and was curious what manufacturers are good to to make them. i'm very curious why one wouldnt want to disclose their manu, coming from someone who has no idea about this stuff. if youve already answered why in some place i'd like to read or watch it please
wow the pins are so beautiful! random question - what's the process like for using existing cartoons in your work? like i always wondered if artists apply to the creators for usage or something? also how do u balance creating your own original characters with that, id be really curious to hear about the decision making process there thanks!
I think it just depends on the copyright. I know some companies that are okay with you making a profit as long as you specify it is fan made and it is not your own creation. Some are a bit more strict where you can’t create any profit from it. I could be wrong tho this is just from what I’ve heard
A lot of creators are stingy with that information because more traffic towards the manufacturer can mean a longer wait time for them, as well as more reasons. I think it's kind of a crappy thing to do but I can sort of understand the reasoning
There are a lot of reasons. Some including: 1. My experience may be great, but another person's may not be. 2. Manus get overrun easily with orders, which slows down production for everyone. 3. Makers like myself spend a lot of time with trial and error testing different Manus and doing our own research, so it's fair for others to do the same. But I'm more than happy to point people into the right direction when finding a manu that works for them
I don't plan on making pins lol but this was adorable and very informing! I would love to buy an enamel pin from you someday but not soon because I have no money ✌🥲 love your videos! They are so pretty and helpful, thank you Apple ❤
Copic Markers used to have Pantone codes on them (apparently they don't anymore, but they have a cross-reference chart on their website). You draw some epically cute stuff, I'm almost afraid to show my wife and daughter, but.. I will. Good advice btw, thank you!

I can say the same 💜
Mhm I agree; My art style is a mix of my own, drawingwiffwaffles, and yours!
What I really want to know is, why people find this basic art as inspiring and cool, when there's someone out there making bigger and cooler things that take a LOT of time and effort... I do like this as well and sometimes I draw smaller things as well... I just think there's things that deserve more attention....
@@PersonTP there is no art style better than any other, its subjective
The enamel pins are adorable!! You are so talented!
6:30 a little tip any art programs you use will also have the hex codes you use in the art
OMG I LOVE ANUBIS SO MUCH! And I like your process as well😁
“How to design enamel pins”
Would be the better title.
I could actually watch this video on loop. There's just something about this I love so much
Aw thank you!
When you create your drawings you could create a box for each of the colours you use so you can compare a larger sample to your Pantone book
you have NO IDEA how helpful this was!! me and some friends are starting a small business and we needed some guidance on the process of making pins!! thanks for the guide 💗💗
Good luck with your business 🥰🥰🥰
Need to rename video - "LET'S ORDER ENAMEL PINS FROM CHINA FACTORY!"
OMG I'M EARLY FOR THE FIRST TIME!! I've always wanted to make enamel pins btw, so thank you! 😊
This is so interesting! I’ve always wondered how this worked. Thank you for breaking it down for us! Love your pins!!
This is the most useful video on enamel pins I ever saw, thank you!
It so cute apple 😁
Thank you! Seeing it laid out like this makes it less scary to start.
All baggies are recyclable! Zip lock, glad...they go in with your store plastic bags. I have been recycling all my bags...cereal bags, cranraisins, cake mix bags, Walmart bags.....so take those baggies in another used bag and toss it into the bin at the front of most grocery stores.
I love Anubis, he is my FAVORITE Egyptian God....lovely art and pins!
Ahh I’d love to learn your ways! Now I can make my own! Tysm Apple!!
i love ur art style omgg
Ahhh your pins are so pretty! Also I love your art style
These pins came out really cute
ok i don't think you are going to see this but i think you are an angel because you mack me happy when i am upset you inspire and when i want to give you keep me going you are just amazing it is like you were sent from heaven
Oh my gosh
I used to watch you then i changed my account!
I’ve finnaly found your channel again and i remember how i would watch your videos and use them as ‘how to draw’ vids!
Omg I used to do that too XP
Thank you for this video!! Watching you and many other pin maker's videos has been suuuper helpful about the process and i hope to open up my own shop someday featuring enamel pins, acrylic keychains, prints and more!! It's so exciting to think about the future I can make and have with information such as this video, awesome job!
Thank you for talking about Pantone. They have so many books that it becomes a nightmare to translate colors.
Oh goodness I’m gonna buy the Anubis AND I LOVE the neon orange I think both batches are super cute
Aw thank you 😆
Would love a video on the financial side of running a small business!
Thank you for the information! I love your pins and every cute detail of your process!
I been wanting to get into pin making and this helped me so much! But rn I’m having an issue finding a manufacturer
I own a factory which specialize in manufacturing enamel pins you could reply me if you currently demand a manufacturer😁
Wow! I had no idea so much went into making pins! O_O I mean, they're gorgeous, but man... a lot more work than I would've guessed!
Aw, so cute pins! Now I wanna start to make pins myself, haha. Great video!

This was such an amazing video!!
I love ur art style so so much
Hey I love your pins! Didn't realize you have a youtube channel. What a pleasant surprise!
Very cool look behind the scenes. Thanks UA-cam for recommending this to me! :) And thank you for your great video :)
Thank you!
You could always try calibrating your computer monitor with a colorimeter like a Spyder to get accurate colors.
Oh my colors look different than how they look on my pc's screen when I look at them on phone screen :0 would it fix that too ?
Very cool, I like pins and never have any plans of opening a store lol, but it's nice to see this as a sort of "how it's made video" you know?
I happen to own a factory which specialize in manufacturing enamel pin you could reply to me if you need a new one thx
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I’ve always wondered how this works. ♥️
I'm so confused, those are small ziplocked bags why do you just rip it open like that? (9:10)
That’s exactly what I thought
they're literally reusable lol
Read her pinned comment ^^
Darn, I was hoping to find out a good manufacturer, haha. I already knew "how" to set it up, just finding a "good" manufacturer for a reasonable wholesale price is a little difficult. (Not just for pins, but most things)
Same here. I was trying to find out where to get them made.
I could cast them in copper or silver. In realty maybe a small batch but we could probably collaborate
That's not info some people are willing to give up. You'll just have to do more research.
@@lazer2521 why though? It doesn't cut into the individual's sales at all, it's not like I'm taking her files and selling them myself. There's no reason to keep the company private really.
@@Shadows_Inc
It’s smth I don’t like myself, but it’s been said that it’s mainly bc if more ppl start using the same manufacturer, the lower the quality gets
They r so cute apple!! Also it is a waste of plastic, but sooo cute 😍!!!
Is there a pre-authorization from the owner needed to use a licensed character for the pin? I’ve seen many pin makers use licensed characters and none have answered this question.
Sorry Forgot to say, wow they actually look cool. thanks for sharing how you made them.
Thank you, i need this 💕
thank you for this video ive been wanting to make enamel pins for a while but wasnt sure if there was some special set up you had to do for it. now if only i could get myself to draw things, ive been stuck in a rut for a while. ur art is really cute and wonderful.
these are soooo cute !! i also hate having to waist plastic that isn’t reusable, it’s sucks :( but it happens !
I really want to make pins one day, but I'm kinda color blind so it might be a little difficult to do that.
Greyscale pins could be very cool!
Ah wowww! These are all so cute I wish I could draw as good as you ;w;
Appleminte art has always been there for me and you realluy represent that so thankyou
I was wondering what are the reasons you don't want to share your manufacturer?
6:11 You can sell the wrongly colored one like a "rare shiny" like in pokémon :D
Wow thank you so much for making this!! No joke it’s a lot easier than I thought it would be 😂. Very informative and so happy I found you channel!! SUBSCRIBED!
They are so cute! I wish I could make pins! But how you do them is so cute and they are so cool!✨✨❤️
appleminte. UR A GENIUS THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME MAKE ENAMEL PINS
Great video! Super informative! :D
I would love to know where you get your pin backing cards made. I made a few pins for my 1 year subs on Twitch and right now I'm just using old jewelry boxes :x Is it off of Alibaba as well? Or do you print your own?
For backing cards the best thing to do is order business cards! Different companies have different sizes available :)
Those colors are so pretty! :)
Thanks for the video, was a little curious about how this worked.
wow the pins are so beautiful! random question - what's the process like for using existing cartoons in your work? like i always wondered if artists apply to the creators for usage or something? also how do u balance creating your own original characters with that, id be really curious to hear about the decision making process there thanks!
I think it just depends on the copyright. I know some companies that are okay with you making a profit as long as you specify it is fan made and it is not your own creation. Some are a bit more strict where you can’t create any profit from it. I could be wrong tho this is just from what I’ve heard
@@afunkylittleguy ah that makes senses actually cause there are definitely some brands i see way waaay more fan merch from then others
Why would you not share the manufacture name?! 🤔 That’s the most important thing a lot of people would like to know! 😑
A lot of creators are stingy with that information because more traffic towards the manufacturer can mean a longer wait time for them, as well as more reasons. I think it's kind of a crappy thing to do but I can sort of understand the reasoning
There are a lot of reasons. Some including:
1. My experience may be great, but another person's may not be.
2. Manus get overrun easily with orders, which slows down production for everyone.
3. Makers like myself spend a lot of time with trial and error testing different Manus and doing our own research, so it's fair for others to do the same.
But I'm more than happy to point people into the right direction when finding a manu that works for them
Thank you so much for the information! I’ve been trying to figure out what is screen printing and how to get it done on pins.
Great video! A lot of good info👏
I don't plan on making pins lol but this was adorable and very informing! I would love to buy an enamel pin from you someday but not soon because I have no money ✌🥲 love your videos! They are so pretty and helpful, thank you Apple ❤
I’m sooo excited for it to start
Aww I do like the neon orange ones too though!! 🦊🧡
Appleminte could you please do a video series, turning planets into characters. 😁😊💖
Thank you for this tutorial! I want to make some pins but had no idea where to start.
Copic Markers used to have Pantone codes on them (apparently they don't anymore, but they have a cross-reference chart on their website). You draw some epically cute stuff, I'm almost afraid to show my wife and daughter, but.. I will. Good advice btw, thank you!
Why are you scared to show them? :')
@@bookwormbon482 They'll buy out the whole store. LOL!
Why haven’t you posted been waiting for so long ?! Pleassseeeeee 🙏🏻🥰
