*Update on the use of 3rd Party OS' on UGREEN NAS with hardware, with regard to warranty*: "The Ugreen team confirms that whatever is promised in their warranty policy will not change, which only covers the hardware. They also mention that there is a risk of damage if you install a third-party OS, including data loss and compatibility issues, etc." - Ugreen Representative, 26/3/24
safest 3rd party os would probably be ubuntu server as it is debian based, right? i never prefer the built in os on most nas so I just go with ubuntu server usually.
@@wshyangifyonly thing i dont like about that and unraid is the extra ram usage that could be used for vm or containers. ubuntu server minimized is not too hard to work with but people love gui
@@BrickTamlandOfficial This is the issue of people wanting a NAS, but for it to also be a server of some sort. How do you balance out those needs. if you need to run VMs and be a NAS, time to pay more to get more umph!
This looks pretty great for a first gen product not going to lie. As long as they keep pushing good updates to the operating system, things should shape up to be a really great competitor. If they keep the price affordable people will 100% go UGREEN
You sir, just summerized it better than my own 59 minute video. Take your 'like' and get out!!!! Jokes aside, it's a good prototype, I just want them to put it back in the oven for longer till it's 'done'
@nascompares yeah, seems like the hardware design is close, but I imagine software is a new venture for them? Curious to see how it'll develop. Hopefully positively in to a meaningful competitor in the market space, but it won't be easy.
The writing is on the wall for Synology after years of neglecting the hardware side for years. Fully agree, for a 1st gen product it's very impressive.
First of all, thank you for the detailed test of the hardware and software. I think you are the only yt who does such a great and detailed test, that's why you got my subscription. I have been waiting impatiently for this video review. As I understand it, the hardware is great and the software is still in beta. Now I don't know whether I should buy the 4800 plus or 6800 pro or the 480t plus. I want to use the Nas as a Plex Media Server, Portainer, VM, backup of my Apple devices. This should be my 1st Nas with which I don't want to have any trouble for years. So I trust your suggestions and advice. Would appreciate some advice from you and thanks for the great work 👍👍👍👍🤙🤙
Tbh man, as my (way too long) conclusion says, the system doesn't feel finished right now and therefore I cannot make a recommendation based on this ore release prototype (no one should!!!). But I would say that they (UGREEM) DOES seem legit about this. I saw 4 (technically 5) software updates on the month I had this device and it got better and more optimized with each update..but it still ain't 'there' yet. If I was in your shoes, I'd probably back this. But I would maybe hold off till a few more reviews arrive. I've been chatting to a few other UA-camrs and we all have the same thoughts (give or take). Good hardware, but the software needs more work (shout out to the @thetechnotice and @wundertechtutorials reviews that I believe are on the way v soon, and another bigger that I'm not allowed to mention the week after). Bottom line man, I'm getting good vibes from this product.. but it still needs more time in the oven!
@mariuszfuchs2010 Synology has AMD CPU. Only the old ones have Intel which is too old now. I would buy the ds923+ any day over anything if it only had a Intel processor. Hardware acceleration plex isn't best. Been looking at a Synology for months and was hoping they bring out a new one with a new generation Intel. This Ugreen has much better hardware than any other NAS. Now I rather buy this Ugreen for half the price. And throw another OS in it. I don't care about the warrant anyway.
@@RespectedDesperadoExactly my opinion. Hardware cannot be compared with Synology and Qnap. I had also ordered the 923+ and unfortunately had to send it back because the transcoding simply didn't work. I also waited in vain month after month in the hope that Synology would release a new Nas but it doesn't seem to be the case. And for the price for this hardware and design just great
@@condon4355 Thanks for for firming that the da923+ isn't good at transcoding. Even tho I know it isn't I still was doubting to get one. I've heard and seen some videos that you can somehow install Synology's DSM on another NAS and you can use all the features. I will dive into that. If we can manage to install DSM onto Ugreen that would be perfect.
Thx4ur hard worx! I will get my hands on 6bay variant as an update for my Qnap TS-452-D2-8G only as a secure datavault (raid5, snapshots and backup). So the kickstarter prize triggers me and i love to see further updates of ur intel.
True. But from the Q&A video they did with this channel, they really don't want to go down the rabbit hole of supporting every OS configuration imaginable so they went with a spin of Debian they forked in house as the one they officially support. It remains to be seen whether or not they have installed any anti-customer BS like efuses that would impact any potential RMAs should you swap the boot drive with something else. One question to be asked is will they offer the OS install on these machines on their site as an ISO or better yet a Github instance?
That's a great review and the NAS is very very promissing. Finally seems like some competition for Synology and QNAP. May I ask if it would be possible to do a PLEX review with this device? I'm very curious to see how it performs. Thanks a lot and keep up the great work!
Unfortunately, not at this time. Not because I don't want to (I really, REALLY do). But currently there is no container/VM tool, no support of Debian/packages 3rs party app tools and no Plex app in the app center. So, unless I install a 3rd party OS (which would not be officially supported, so therefore not reliable/applicable in the review), I cannot test Plex yet. But I definitely, definitely will as soon as one of the 3 options above opens up
@@nascompares thanks for your answer. Hope they figure out Docker support. That would take the NAS a big step forward. Wonder how the likes of Synology, Qnap and Asustor will react. At the price point of Ugreen, they have a serious and imminent threat (provided they figure out the software side).
Just a heads up (and q bit arrogant to share my own 'gear', I know) But the software beta review is now live - ua-cam.com/video/YaLPl41LByo/v-deo.html I am only sharing here with your comment as your raised Q's about UGOS. Have a great weekend!
@@nascompares yes thanks for that.. UA-cam suggested it even before i saw this comment lol.. can you ask ugreen or recommend to make a version that used the 2.5inch ssd or hdd or those are just being phased out?
Commenting before watching: I'm really excited to see Ugreen break in to this space and see what they can bring to the table! I've been enjoying their designs in the charger and adapter sector. While I don't yet see them as a name that's synonymous with guaranteed quality and the highest standards, they do seem to be pushing competition in value delivered. I think that's very exciting for us laymen!
First impressions just on visuals is, like I mentioned previously, I love their brand image and visual design language. Gorgeous box and trays. You suggest Fallout around 5:30 but I was thinking something more like Evangelion perhaps. Or just generally, very clean and modern, but sort of sci-fi utilitarian.
Thanks for showing how hard it is to install another OS on it...that was pretty extreme😮 37-53W seems like a lot of power for a NAS...and this isn't even the 1235u 6 bay I'd get 😔
im just about ready to transition from a 4 bay to an 8 bay so I think im going to snag the 8 bay for the discount and sit on it while things get ironed out. The price for that hardware is just too good that that price imo. Great review!
You aren't alone in this bud. The 8 bay in particular (when it's closest comparable turnkey solution in the market at retail is the QNAP TVS-h874 at $2500-3000 + TB4 at $3500 maybe) is a bloody steal. I just really, really see them do more with the software
I agree with you on two factor security being key. I am going to get a unit ones your pleased. I am 84 years old, Physicist, am spend 54 years working on Eglin AFB.
the 40% early bird discount is what got me to back this product. I have a Ryzen 2700x from a prior system of mine that is mostly sitting unused. I would just need need a new a case and motherboard, preferably RAM as well, but being able to lock in $600 for a six-bay NAS is incredible.
Phenomenal review. Being the first time considering buying a nas what is your opinion on buying this or something else instead? I want to finally centralise my file system but it does become incredibly confusing.
I'm just thinking, isn't it possible to pass the power to the NAS through a Wi-Fi enabled plug? That way every time you need to use it you can turn the plug on via an application for that, and then just wait a minute or so for the NAS to connect to your network so you can access it remotely. Would that work??
If the only thing that we miss out on is the warranty but we still have the option to install 3rd party OS options. then I think that's acceptable. worst case use it stock until the warranty expires then upgrade to a supported 3rd party OS (or sooner if you don't care about the warranty)
Waited so long for you review! Huge fan of yours since I am new to this whole NAS topic and your videos are really helpful! Is it in general possible to use this NAS (or any other) for hoarding data, especially videos etc and use a Mini PC as the Plex server that accesses the videos from the NAS? My use case would be mostly for storing digital documents, photos and videos. Since they currently don’t seem to have a Plex app, I wonder if above solution would be possible. I am currently cheering for this device due to the comparably great hardware/€… Would rather use synology but cannot believe what kind of hardware they are selling compared to others
Just a heads up (and q bit arrogant to share my own 'gear', I know) But the software beta review is now live - ua-cam.com/video/YaLPl41LByo/v-deo.html I am only sharing here with your comment as your raised Q's about UGOS. Have a great weekend!
Please explain how you disassembled the server casing. I removed the rubber caps from the back and unscrewed the 4 screws, but I still cannot remove the server casing. I want to replace the UGREEN disk with another one and install a different OS. Video Chapters 19:24 - Internal Hardware
I was pretty interested but after I watched a Q&A video where they mentioned if you install any other OS they'd void the warranty... Nah. Currently considering a DIY NAS...
Great review. I’ll pass now and pick up a QNAP instead since I need Plex support sooner than later and there is no timeline on that, let alone everything else to do with its software. Thank you again!
33:3038:11 These issues are not "beta" category. Edit: these issues are post-v1-release category. UGreen NASes were manufactured for a non-English market and did not successfully sell. Their kickstarter is a well-veiled fire sale; project -rewardees- backers beware. Nice video 👍 great YT channel. Thank you.
Great review, the product looks high quality, if they allow to run FOSS, they can have a market cracker. Their embedded software for average users (looks a lot like CasaOS spin/Debian) and then Crysis/TrueNas for the geeks. I could not agree more with you on the CrowdF path. I think if they can make the product retail at a decent price , they can really release a market cracker@@nascompares . Do you think they will let people install their own OS?
Installing 3rd os is definitely doable (ran UnRAID with relative ease), but it's still up for debate if UGREEN will change their policy on hardware warranty support on users making this OS switch
totally agree with you on the sd card slots, it always seemed weird to me how many off the shelf nases don't have one when they seem to mostly advertise to photographers and other content creators who are mostly moving data from sd cards anyway.
Thanks for this. Not sure how I missed the boat about that 40% discount but that alone has gotten me very interested in this, so it seems I have less than 24 hours to decide if I want to pull the trigger or not. For that price with that hardware, I'm considering just getting the 8 bay and sitting on it a while until I can get good prices on drives and give them time to sort out the software etc. or reverse the decision about voiding the warranty if you install another OS. It's completely unusable for me without Docker anyway, as I do everything with Docker Compose.
Which way does the air travel through the system? Is it from rear to front or vice versa? The reason I ask is I suspect that I would assume that the air is coming in from the font and is blown out the back at which point the filter in the back is of no use.
@@nascompares On the beta unit it's rear to front, so I don't see why this would be any different. Oh and when you disassembled the unit, the orientation of the fan shows that it's rear to front.
Can these NAS drives be used for storage and play of 4k UHD Blu-ray Discs? Would I need additional hardware to stream it over my home network through the newest Apple TV? I am quadriplegic and can’t change discs without help so this device could be very helpful and freeing for me. Thanks for reading.
Any network-attached storage can be used to stream video, including 4k, to media devices. Now whether it works depends on the chosen method (which is the video format - disk image, or a rip), the network setup you have (particularly at higher resolutions/bitrates), the method of playback - playback by media device such as Nvidia shield/Android tv box/apple tv from a file stored on the network, or playback by media server running on the nas device, and for the latter - direct play from network device which requires better network or transcoding which requires more CPU performance and works best when there's a GPU/a CPU that supports stuff like quicksync. E.g. I use Nvidia shield for playback on my tv, files are stored on my Synology Nas and some on my PC, 1gbe Ethernet connecting devices, alternatively there's wifi as backup and it also works well. Not watching bd images/remuxes but watching bd rips up to about 50 gigs in size without issues via Kodi. Conversely, jellyfin didn't work out for me because the older Synology I have is too weak cpu-wise to transcode the files without uncomfortable delays.
I mention this in the written review (and forgot to add it here in the video). In the current beta, the MTU was fixed at 1500 cap on the NAS (I could only scale down, not up!!!). So adjusting the jumbo frames on my 10G nice would have been pointless. Absolutely NO IDEA why the beta won't let me adjust above 1500... Absolute AGONY
The linked review for the unit and the UGOS software review in the comments dig into the beta OS alot more. Will address this more in the DCP480T video.
@nascompares well, it's more for us DYIers to know how capable the system is. Anyway, thanks for the review! I had already decided on buying the 6-bay unit as soon as I saw the specs. It's a lot more powerful than my Qnap 672X, and way cheaper. I will most likely install a different OS, tho.
What are some good alternatives for DXP4800 plus from Synology? I like synology better and would like to put my money in who is in the industry for a longer period?
I'm interested in the 8 bay variant as I currently have a 4 bay synology and when that fills up I'm going to need more bays. Im hoping for something where I can still slowly upgrade the storage one drive at a time like the synology. Im wondering if the OS or an alternate one can support that since this seems a better value than getting a synology 8 bay.
Great Review. The idle power consumption of about 55w with 4 drives is a bummer. Other 4-Bay NAS with 4 Drivers consumes about 30w in Idle. Thats about 25w more on Ugreen, which sums up to 220kwh per year (~75€ in Germany). I could not find any snapshot capability ether, which is a key feature for a nas. At the end of the day the hardware and price really shines, but theres not much you can do with it with Ugreen OS.
Remember that my power tests there were pretty primitive tbh and there are better and more precise tools out there (I just didn't have time in the end to expand on this, but working towards resolving this in a follow up vid). Nevertheless, the power use was higher than I expected, even by my comparatively basic testing
It seems like they borked power management with a firmware update. I'm a beta tester and when I was running an older firmware, I was seeing 26-28 degrees Celsius on idle but when I upgraded to the newest firmware, my idle temp is around 43-48C. Not cool...literally. Such a low power CPU should not be getting that hot on idle.
From what I understand, talking to other 'tubers' the firmware updates have been far from consistent for all - with varying 'current' firmware revisions floating about. It's going to be something of a review pottery to see what FW different reviewers will be running when other videos land
I can explain that It is still an early sample, not a shelf/final version They have a big team of developers who keep working on this Please give some time for KS starter project 😊 All issues will be fixed and all features will be there, but we can't guarantee anything or give the timetable due to NDA restriction We also try keep the system closed to provide industry best support and user experience , stay tuned Best , me a random guy pretending to be a marketing person Thank you
If they add a few as certain functionality and improve security and 3rd party support (PLEX and such). Also if they offer something similar to Synology SHR raid configuration I would definitely consider switching from Synology.
Will the final released version of the Ugreen NAS's have any different hardware or other parts inside might be different than these Kickstarter versions?
Excellent video.i really like your videos. So what is ur suggestion..do the diy like i9 erying PROJECT or buy the ugreen nas 6 bay and wait for them to do some miracle to software or allow 3rd party O.S?
ALOT to unpavkere here. Ok, so 1, if you CAN DiY it (skillset, time, availability), go for it. It's more rewarding and also allows greater gains + savings. But the UGREEN (if they nail it) has the potential to be the best alternative out there to this for the price. The software (and indeed the system) isn't aimed for retail till well into the summer... So UGOS and the system optimization might be a different ballgame come July/August. Cannot tell. Also, re: 3rd party OS support in conjunction with h/w warranty, I'd comfortably bet that they will change their stance on this when the crowdfunding starts and the comments section rolls in!
If I just use it as aNetworkdrive with two NVMEs for writing and reading cache + HDDs, and turn anything else off, make it not reachable, I should be fine? Or is the certificate breach a problem still?
DXP6800 Pro, with 6x2TB Ironwolf SSD's plus 2x4TB Crucial P3 Plus NVMe's + 64GB RAM. Set up single storage pool w/ 6 SSD's (12TB, 8TB usable). Updated to newest FW. Rebooted a couple of times. Problem - in Storage Manager, there is no option to add SSD Cache. Should be found by clicking the 3 dots to the right of the storage pool. That pull-down menu does not list SSD caching at all. Further, under Hard Disks it shows the 2 NVMe drives and says they are both "normal". Are these NAS incompatible with Crucial P3+ NVMe's?? This is frustrating.
Someone on reddit commented that caching may not be available if SATA SSD's are used for main drives. Haven't found that stated anywhere. After running file transfer tests, SATA SSD's more or less fully saturate the 10GbE link so caching might be useless anyway. But strange that the option is fully removed in this configuration.
A few questions, does it come with 3.5 to 2.5 inch adapters? Also do you have the 6 bay model? curious about the size of the PCIE x4 expansion slot, wondering if one can shove a GPU in there
The thing is, I don't mind beta products for many uses, but my storage systems need to be solid. My current 3-drive NAS has been running for over 10 years. I can't see trusting an incomplete, crowdfunded solution. And, face it, the main reason for crowd funding is when the company doesn't have the resources to complete the device without getting money up front. My conclusion is that either Ugreen really doesn't have many resources or they are using crowd funding as a method of marketing.
Thanks for the review always appreciated. Very disappointed by Ugreen policy to limit starter to Germany and the US. Why many people are getting test units for free outsides of those 2 countries, but was refused to subscribe
It's an odd one. Do watch my latest video and use the chapters to skip to my point about international delivery...if you can look past my silly jokes, it's a valid point !
The move here is to put truenas scale on it and call it a day, probably makes a perfectly competent truenas box, and you get all of the features you could ever want, probably more performant too
I don't think we really need yet another NAS OS, especially not a Chinese made one. So can you run Unraid or even better TrueNAS on these UGREEN boxes?
Just a heads up (and q bit arrogant to share my own 'gear', I know) But the software beta review is now live - ua-cam.com/video/YaLPl41LByo/v-deo.html I am only sharing here with your comment as your raised Q's about UGOS. Have a great weekend!
I like to see new players entering the market. I feel like Symbology has become lazy in recent years and needs a kick up the bum (Low ram, 1GB ports, etc).
I hope the final product will allow me to use ZFS instead of Btrfs. Otherwise I could always disable the watchdog, enable UEFI boot and boot unRAID from a USB stick, I guess... 🤔
As someone completely new to this space I had a question. The transfer speeds that you showed over 10gbe was slow and again sorry for my incompetence when asking this but, thats transfer stuff over the network so wireless right? I have a mac studio that has a 10gb ethernet port could I plug the ethernet cable directly from my mac to the NAS and receive much fast speeds?
If you want to just have extra storage attached to a desktop pc or Mac, you could consider a DAS. Google QNAP DAS units. They generally connect via USB 3 at 10gb speeds. DAS generally cheaper than NAS. I'm not saying the NAS won't connect to the Mac though, it's just that being cost conscious, and enjoying mocking Mac users, I am not familiar with Mac
You can use a Peer to Peer Connection. But you dont will get a faster Speed with this nas as is Shown in the Video. SATA is Limited to 6GB/s. Magnetical HDD are even slower. So you Need all SATA SSDs or if you Need the Full 10gb, Switch to the nvme Modell.
Why does the spec sheet list that the 2 bay and 4 bay use 32gig EMMC OS drives? I won't buy devices that use soldered EMMC storage. EDIT: Also what is the HDMI port for? I don't see any options for something like a plex server or other media server service.
Haven't tested the N100 2 and 3 bay, so cannot speak for them. The HDMI currently only provide multimedia output and is managed by the media app in the browser (and mobile I believe, need to confirm that)
I feel like a n00b asking this, but is your video of the interface accelerated at all? I have a pretty beefy QNAP and it in no way responds that quickly.
Not a noob question, it's native and not in any way altered. Also, this video will be live next week, just you can watch it now (adding chapters later) - ua-cam.com/video/YaLPl41LByo/v-deo.html
I like this NAS, but compared to the Synology that uses a 12cm fan that is easily replaceable, the ugreen uses a rather custom fan that can be potentially hard to replace if it fails
Tbh I didn't even consider this, as no one asks for it. If you can ping me an email on Monday morning, I'll send you the dimensions, weight, etc. out of the studio till then, but happy to oblige if you ping me an email. robbie (at) NASCompares.com
Hi Rafael (10/10 NAME BTW... RIDICULOUSLY JEALOUS). Sorry I am replying here, I saw your email but I couldn;t reply as I am traveling and my email server is restricting me. I was in the office earlier (before running away to a support job for a colleague) and measured up the system and shipping container for you (the shiny retail box is like 2mm less in each dimension than the shipping container!) Retail Box: 37.5cm x 26cm x 27cm System: 25cm x 17.8cm x 17.8cm Regarding weight, that was a bit of a problem. I am currently letting a couple of U.S based UA-camrs access the system for their own reviews of the software and when I got to the office, it was painfully obvious that they were in the middle of recording something (stock or actual review content - the ultrastar 10TBs were buzzing away and the network was ABLAZE!), so I couldn't move the system to some wall scales in another room. I would say though that the system and PSU itself is approx 3-4KG (5K with the drives) and retail kit probably brings it to around the 8-9KG mark. Apologies for the vague numbers. The retail package DOES state the product dimensions...something I discovered AFTER measuring it manually (LIVID!!!), but zero mention on the retail kit or container about the weight and ti was shipped alongside the DXP480T unit and some packaging materials, so the DHL shipping label would be vastly inaccurate! Hope this helps man and I do hope you enjoyed the video and article.
I'm thinking of using the 2 nvme 4+4=8tb with docker and lancache with one of the 10gb nic. Then make a raid with the hard drive for my network share drive using the other 10gb nic.
Unless you are hoping to rock on with a 3rd party OS..your plan might hit a wall at Docker... They do say they will be rolling out a container tool down the line though. TBC
There's no automatic setting for that, but few NAS brands include this, as (unless you have a USB/cloud backup in place with the NAS) it would potentially result in your files technically having zero backup

Yes, same height. Putting together a Q&A vid together on the unit after this vid..as I FOOLISHLY said this was an 'everything' review, but so far it turns out I missed about 7-8 questions people have asked (inc yours!)
For the DXP4800 Plus it was: Retail Box: 37.5cm x 26cm x 27cm System: 25cm x 17.8cm x 17.8cm I'm like 95% sure the 6 and 8 Bay are gonna be the same height
@@nascompares Okay, I take it that the dimensions are (D x W x H), so the height of the unit is 178mm/7.007", a tiny fraction above 4U (which is 177.8mm/7"). That will help me decide on if it's space-efficient enough for a server rack shelf and if I should budget 5U of space for it. Thanks!
Yep, I just realized that I said this in the intro segment, but accidentally cut it out when I had to remove a part about the launch date (originally March 12th, now March 26th). Sorry about that man
I got my DXP4800+ a few days ago (as of this post) and while the default software looks more polished, I'm now struggling with network speed issues (facepalm). Latest software version is not helping. Goes full throttle for a few seconds, then it drops to a crawl (kb/s) I may have to give a 3rd party software a go at this rate. But I knew what I was getting myself into, so it's just annoying, not game breaking xD Can't say the same for innocent people who only wanted an off the shelf experience though.
60W idle power consumption is a no go. This would cost 160€ in energy per year in germany. No wonder noone else is talking about the power consumption. If it stays like that i am out.
To be fair, my tests were not exactly scientific and this is an early prototype. That said however, it is definitely hungrier than I thought it would be!
@@nascompares well, your shargeek measured the output power delivered directly to the nas. So the power consumption from the wall with the psu wich is typicaly around (80-95%) would be even 5-20% higher then what you measured. This is a dealbreaker for me.

I was interested in the 4bay or 6bay options... The 3dP OS capability does not look important compared to their inability to provide delivery to some countries on the planet *apart from two (2!)*... That, also coupled with a strange KickStarter-only nice price, looks like another blatant cashgrab, like several other KickStarter projects. This is definitely not befitting a company with more than 10yrs presence on the market - it creates a bad precedence for their future product lines and it is a valid reason for many people to stay away .
@@nyccontrabass3489 I never learned that while I was there as an exchange student. Had to wiki it, there's a few theories but the bottom line is nobody really knows.
I've been saying for a while that I don't understand why this processor hasn't been more popular with these kind of devices. The 5 core 1P+4E benchmarks pretty close to the N100 overall, but it has a bunch more PCIe lanes.
I think it's the power use, the N100 is (comparatively) comically lower than everything else at the moment. Then you have the N300/305, which scales things up, whilst still keeping that active use watt use low. The 8505 is a SOLID CPU and price wise, great vs the i5 etc, but it also gets pretty hungry, even with 4 e corea
Looks good I am considering; however ...... they should have concentrated on the hardware and put something like TrusNAS on, or allow you to choose an OS when purchasing. Companies shouldn't keep trying to reinvent systems. Would have been relased quicker and less expensive without their custom software. I would be happy with Ubuntu server with ZFS. But would be overkill, so I should stick to repurposing old hardware I suppose. I worry about the Drobo situation if they kill this project. Wouldn't be great running out of date NAS software. The hardware looks great and mature.
To be fair, alot of users overlook how the licensing for something like TrueNAS goes. Currently iXsystems is THE TrueNAS partner...UnRAID is a little more flexible (see Lincstation), but it's alot more tricksy that people (including ME!) think
Do you know, if on the 6 bay and 8 bay Versions, the Thunderbolt on the front is to connect to the Computer direkt, so the NAS can be used as a Storage pool, or is the thunderbolt port in front only for a external hard drive to connect?
The TB port is for the host (NAS) control only. i.e it only supports external storage and peripherals where the NAS is in control. What you are describing is currently only available from QNAP
Your 10gbe tests should be with a single 6+GB file, not 18 files making up 4GB. The AJA test was with 512mb. You should increase that to 10GB. 10gbe will complete 512mb before it gets started.
That you have to disassemble the whole thing to get to the drive where the OS is installed is a big NOGO Edit: Thanks for the in depth review, but I'm so pissed, that there is no hardware only option for this thing.

Might be a wait. Main issue with ALL NAS is the proprietary nature of their drive sleds. Buy a couple if one is going to keep the NAS for the long run.
@@brodriguez11000Fair enough. The early adopters, who will encounter the teething phase of the software are getting a 40% for their troubles. That disconnect may be a offer that cannot be ignored for some. I'm thinking of backing the campaign and giving the OEM software a try. If it hasn't matured from the current state by the time I get my NAS, I'll switch to a different NAS OS (like unRAID).
@@brodriguez11000my QNAP NAS has been running 24/7 since 2008 and I had to remove only one drive once in all that time. And even then pulling out the drive and directly putting it back in its slot solved the issue. So, I don't expect much strain on the drive carriers.

Fully agree, for a 1st gen product it's very impressive.
actually its not first product of Ugreen NAS, the first Ugreen NAS product DX4600 has already release for a few years ago in China
6 Bay for 600 bucks is so tempting that I might just spring for it. This was a fantastic in depth review and I greatly appreciate you making it!
Awesome review! Many thanks! 👏Looking forward to the TrueNAS/Proxmox UGREEN video 🤞
Definitely want to know if transfer speeds pick up at all under TrueNAS, and if power draw changes at all
First of all, thank you for the detailed test of the hardware and software.
If it's me I will choose my first nas as 1 Terramaster 2 Asustor if you need something more advanced go for Qnap or Synology.
Hardware is awesome, but the software seems to need some time to mature. Voiding the warranty if you install an alternative OS is a bit disappointing.
Hopefully they will consider a little flexibility on the whole IS thing...we hope
If you dont buy a nas with emmc but a os nvme noone will know if you just replace it with a nvme with another OS on it... 😅
True
Software is harder to get right compared to hardware.
But I definitely, definitely will as soon as one of the 3 options above opens up
Handle would be nice.
@@nascompares thanks for your answer. Hope they figure out Docker support. That would take the NAS a big step forward. Wonder how the likes of Synology, Qnap and Asustor will react. At the price point of Ugreen, they have a serious and imminent threat (provided they figure out the software side).

Tbh I absolutely love the chassis design (barring those trays)
Also, those are some 10/10 descriptive references btw!
Great fair review - shame its not available in the UK - Germany and US only. Im sure they will learn and go with third party OS surely.

im just about ready to transition from a 4 bay to an 8 bay so I think im going to snag the 8 bay for the discount and sit on it while things get ironed out.
Agree, the 8-Bay Pro hardware for that discount price, I am waiting patiently
That power consumption would absolutely kill my buying intentions if it stays that way.
Would love to see its idle power with Unraid and powertop.
Hopefully that work on optimizing this, alongside other things
As someone from a country where I pay around 1 $ per kW, this would quickly be a bad investment..
@@OleVanmanwhere are you from? I would get off the grid using only solar or running my own generator.
I have the feeling the PSU that comes in the box is ~60% efficient, accounting for maybe a quarter of the idle power draw.

I can totally see them reversing this decision!
Great review. I’ll pass now and pick up a QNAP instead since I need Plex support sooner than later and there is no timeline on that, let alone everything else to do with its software. Thank you again!

33:30 38:11 These issues are not "beta" category. Edit: these issues are post-v1-release category.
UGreen NASes were manufactured for a non-English market and did not successfully sell. Their kickstarter is a well-veiled fire sale; project -rewardees- backers beware.
Nice video 👍 great YT channel. Thank you.
But, can it run Crysis? (AKA TrueNas)
*smashes like button so hard the screen cracks*
Great review, the product looks high quality, if they allow to run FOSS, they can have a market cracker. Their embedded software for average users (looks a lot like CasaOS spin/Debian) and then Crysis/TrueNas for the geeks.
I could not agree more with you on the CrowdF path. I think if they can make the product retail at a decent price , they can really release a market cracker@@nascompares . Do you think they will let people install their own OS?
Yes but you will break the warranty.
From another review, all the HW is recognised under standard Debian Linux distro, so running TrueNAS should be no problem at all.
Installing 3rd os is definitely doable (ran UnRAID with relative ease), but it's still up for debate if UGREEN will change their policy on hardware warranty support on users making this OS switch
If it is the retail version, would you recommend to buy? (Since the price in south-east Asia is very competitive with around 300 pound)
totally agree with you on the sd card slots, it always seemed weird to me how many off the shelf nases don't have one when they seem to mostly advertise to photographers and other content creators who are mostly moving data from sd cards anyway.
Absolutely staggered that SD card slots are not 'a thing'

Thanks for this. Not sure how I missed the boat about that 40% discount but that alone has gotten me very interested in this, so it seems I have less than 24 hours to decide if I want to pull the trigger or not.
For that price with that hardware, I'm considering just getting the 8 bay and sitting on it a while until I can get good prices on drives and give them time to sort out the software etc. or reverse the decision about voiding the warranty if you install another OS. It's completely unusable for me without Docker anyway, as I do everything with Docker Compose.
Looking at the KS page, it seems this is only shipping to USA & Germany, so can't actually back it in the UK
Which way does the air travel through the system? Is it from rear to front or vice versa? The reason I ask is I suspect that I would assume that the air is coming in from the font and is blown out the back at which point the filter in the back is of no use.
I'll check on Monday. Good shout! I didn't consider this
@@nascompares On the beta unit it's rear to front, so I don't see why this would be any different. Oh and when you disassembled the unit, the orientation of the fan shows that it's rear to front.
Thanks for the clarification 'cd. Currently off site and you just saved me a lot of mucking around. Cheers bud
Also, where is the air going? There are no vent holes on the front so the pressure inside the unit is just going to get hotter with nowhere to go.
@@gordon861 There's actually a decent amount of air gap between the drives for airflow.
Just FYI, you used 10Gbe but kept the MTU at 1500. You should test with jumbo frames (9000 MTU).
@@nascompares absolutely bonkers! Try adjusting directly on Linux via SSH.
Ah, but then it wouldn't be a fair demo of the status of the system 'as is'. Catch 22..bugger!
Thanks for the great in-depth review
I want to see the review of the DXP8800 Plus please.
I can explain that
It is still an early sample, not a shelf/final version
They have a big team of developers who keep working on this
Please give some time for KS starter project 😊
All issues will be fixed and all features will be there, but we can't guarantee anything or give the timetable due to NDA restriction
We also try keep the system closed to provide industry best support and user experience , stay tuned

Question: Have you enable jumbo frames on your OS NIC settings? Thx
If they add a few as certain functionality and improve security and 3rd party support (PLEX and such). Also if they offer something similar to Synology SHR raid configuration I would definitely consider switching from Synology.
can you upload other software? can you install unRaid or TrueNAS?
What is the direction of the fan in relation to the filter, from front to back or from back to front.
Mine is showing up tomorrow. We will see what happens
Would you buy it to run unraid? I'm looking to replace my aging home built nas.
Will I be able to use the thunderbolt connection to transfer files from my drobo to the urgreen?
Hi, i think it’s a great device, but i have two u.2 server ssd Micron and Intel, can they be used with this NAS?
A few questions, does it come with 3.5 to 2.5 inch adapters? Also do you have the 6 bay model? curious about the size of the PCIE x4 expansion slot, wondering if one can shove a GPU in there
The screws that come in the box are to screw in 2.5" drives to the bays.
Very much the latter I believe
Thank you for your review. Is it possible to connect another computer directly to this nas via cable to open the disks?
Only via IP protocol

I like to see new players entering the market. I feel like Symbology has become lazy in recent years and needs a kick up the bum (Low ram, 1GB ports, etc).
Weak CPUs, poor qvl, vendor-lock, poor client software...
@@BoraHorzaGobuchul The apps (DS Video, etc) all need a big overhaul for sure
I hope the final product will allow me to use ZFS instead of Btrfs.
Otherwise I could always disable the watchdog, enable UEFI boot and boot unRAID from a USB stick, I guess... 🤔
Yep, bingo, bongo, 3rd party OS. Done! I reckon they will soften on this subject soon, it's too high a request to ignore in a crowdfunded product
Is there a regular UEFI/BIOS that would allow to use an alternative NAS OS such as UnRAID, FreeNAS in conjunction with the USB port?
Technically yes, but you have to play a little with UEFI
I don't like external PSU, I don't mind the NAS itself a bit bigger.
No one has mentioned the PSU yet, cheers for your thoughts on it
My 6 year old Synology DS1618+, populated with 6 Iron Wolf Pro 7200rpm drives, gets 733 MB/s write and 1026 MB/s read over a 10 gigabit network.
Yep, there are plenty of HDD systems that can saturate 10G
What are the physical dimensions?
Does anyone know the idle power consumption of the just SSD version?
Do these units support RAID?
by chance does anyone know if this kickstarter is going to be able to be delivered to the UK? I've seen contradicting info
Us and Germany only i think. We'll know when kickstarter will launch in few hours
Does it support truenas?
Can we get the measurements of the retail box it ships in?
Tbh I didn't even consider this, as no one asks for it. If you can ping me an email on Monday morning, I'll send you the dimensions, weight, etc. out of the studio till then, but happy to oblige if you ping me an email. robbie (at) NASCompares.com
Hi Rafael (10/10 NAME BTW... RIDICULOUSLY JEALOUS). Sorry I am replying here, I saw your email but I couldn;t reply as I am traveling and my email server is restricting me. I was in the office earlier (before running away to a support job for a colleague) and measured up the system and shipping container for you (the shiny retail box is like 2mm less in each dimension than the shipping container!)
Retail Box: 37.5cm x 26cm x 27cm
System: 25cm x 17.8cm x 17.8cm
Regarding weight, that was a bit of a problem.
@@nascompares Much Appreciated!
TBC

is it possible to ssh-connect on the system?
Man I just built my own NAS and didn’t even know about this thing. I wish I did.
When you backup photos can you make it delete the photos on your phone once those are uploaded?
There's no automatic setting for that, but few NAS brands include this, as (unless you have a USB/cloud backup in place with the NAS) it would potentially result in your files technically having zero backup
Just a heads up (and q bit arrogant to share my own 'gear', I know) But the software beta review is now live - ua-cam.com/video/YaLPl41LByo/v-deo.html
I am only sharing here with your comment as your raised Q's about UGOS. Have a great weekend!
@@nascompares I appreciate it! I have been looking forward to more UGOS in depth reviews because software plays a big part in the nas
What are the dimensions of the case? Will the 6-bay and the 8-bay model be the same height?
Yes, same height. Putting together a Q&A vid together on the unit after this vid..as I FOOLISHLY said this was an 'everything' review, but so far it turns out I missed about 7-8 questions people have asked (inc yours!)
For the DXP4800 Plus it was:
Retail Box: 37.5cm x 26cm x 27cm
System: 25cm x 17.8cm x 17.8cm
I'm like 95% sure the 6 and 8 Bay are gonna be the same height
@@nascompares Okay, I take it that the dimensions are (D x W x H), so the height of the unit is 178mm/7.007", a tiny fraction above 4U (which is 177.8mm/7").
That will help me decide on if it's space-efficient enough for a server rack shelf and if I should budget 5U of space for it.
Thanks!
Can you swap the fan to something like a noctua?
I mean, probably. But it's not too bad as it is tbh
Wait they put drmos vrm on that thing 😮
Hardware looks nice ,just software still need some work to become a turkey nas product
This is only available to the USA and Germany right?
Yep, I just realized that I said this in the intro segment, but accidentally cut it out when I had to remove a part about the launch date (originally March 12th, now March 26th). Sorry about that man
I got my DXP4800+ a few days ago (as of this post) and while the default software looks more polished, I'm now struggling with network speed issues (facepalm). Latest software version is not helping. Goes full throttle for a few seconds, then it drops to a crawl (kb/s) I may have to give a 3rd party software a go at this rate. But I knew what I was getting myself into, so it's just annoying, not game breaking xD
Can't say the same for innocent people who only wanted an off the shelf experience though.
Could you test this again in more detail in idle mode? This is really a deal breaker for Germany power prices 😅 @@nascompares
@@nascompares well, your shargeek measured the output power delivered directly to the nas. So the power consumption from the wall with the psu wich is typicaly around (80-95%) would be even 5-20% higher then what you measured. This is a dealbreaker for me.
I know the constant use of the word “Utilised” is intentional - to cater to American audiences’ distorted English. But it does grate!
Can it run unraid?
Will this get Docker and Plex? It looks like a really attractive option but my main uses would be just for Plex and maybe a minecraft server.

I am only sharing here with your comment as your raised Q's about UGOS. Have a great weekend!
5 core? 6 threads??? How, what, I'm so curious what is under the hood of that CPU
I hope we can get a stable version of TrueNAS Scale to run into this until the UGOS get better.
You can run it with some tweaks in UEFI, but the real debate is about the hardware warranty
Will they allow you to buy 2 units with ONE $5 deposit?
That's one to ask them tbh
Your main camera is the only thing you need
I hear seagulls. More than the device. Hahaha
So do I...all the time... I never not hear them....
@@nascompares hah! Well, I am sure you have better fish than I do out here in Indiana.
@@nyccontrabass3489there's fresh corn though for you Hoosiers :)
@@BoraHorzaGobuchul hahaha. More pork than corn. Lol. Also what the hell is a Hoosier? I’ve never figured that out
@@nyccontrabass3489 I never learned that while I was there as an exchange student.
@@nascompares Yes. I did notice, which I haven't heard from other reviewers, UGREEN are using BTRFS so that's decent.
Do you know, if on the 6 bay and 8 bay Versions, the Thunderbolt on the front is to connect to the Computer direkt, so the NAS
can be used as a Storage pool, or is the thunderbolt port in front only for a external hard drive to connect?
The TB port is for the host (NAS) control only. i.e it only supports external storage and peripherals where the NAS is in control. What you are describing is currently only available from QNAP
1000th like! (if I'm to believe UA-cam.)
Your 10gbe tests should be with a single 6+GB file, not 18 files making up 4GB. The AJA test was with 512mb. You should increase that to 10GB. 10gbe will complete 512mb before it gets started.
That you have to disassemble the whole thing to get to the drive where the OS is installed is a big NOGO
Edit: Thanks for the in depth review, but I'm so pissed, that there is no hardware only option for this thing.
I'm still not see that part yet It sounds like another way to warranty void if following their style 😂
Tbh, removing the casing to get to the OS SSD isn't THAT unusual..but the 3rd Party OS switch barrier is certainly a major sticking point
@@nascompares if think positive it is the third m2 slot we can using as storage /cache/ interesting add on m2 like mini NPU
Hardware wise it is not many 4bay nas give 3 m2 2280 slot
I still don’t understand why UGreen needs to crowdfund this product…
Umm....yeah
Greed, free beta-testing, hype
Not buying something that might be some day. I'll check it out when its really for sale.
Valid!
@@brodriguez11000 Drive sleds don’t wear out. Had a Synology running for 8 years. Suffered 1 drive failure. The sleds have basically been touched for 10 minutes total.
