Gilda/Duke Of Mantua duet from act 1 of Verdi's opera, Rigoletto. Galli Curci and Schipa previously recorded this duet for Victor in 1924. The September 7, 1928 electrical re-recording is presented here.

This is by far my favourite duet from the best of the best!! In those days recordings were made by the singers literally singing into a large horn. Schipa's voice was so powerful you can AUDIBLY hear him pull back from the horn so as not to cause distortion. These two blended beautifully....nothing these days can compare!!

This is an electrical recording; Schipa and Galli-Curci recorded this duet by the acoustic horn process 4 years prior to this one.

@@eblackadder3 My ex-partner has this recording on 78 RPM. In those days the recordings could be "iffy" compared to today and the slightest loud vibration ( in this case the voice ) could cause distortion on the finished recording....so Tito backs off. You can distinctly hear him pulling his voice back...quite brilliant really. A wonderful master of his own vocal ability.

I have 78 RCA Victor recordings of Schipa I listened to hundreds of times as a child … Salve Dimora (Faust) and Il sogno (Manon) among others…loved him. Maybe that's why I became such a Bjorling fan…both sublime.
