That "Star Candy" is called "Konpeito", it is now been list as "Japanese Candy", but by fact it is actually Portuguese, it was introduced to Japan in the 16th century, and was made famous after it was offered to Oda Nobunaga by Missionary Luis Frois in 1569, and Luis manage to obtain permit to carry out mission works for Christianity.
And it's name "Konpeito" is also come from the Portuguese word "Confeito", which stand for comfit.
+Vostadues Great info, thanks.
Hi! gundog!
The identity of the mystery of the meat is boiled mackerel of ginger
It is the cooking well to eat has been in Japan
I like it :D
The really cool thing about Mexican coke, and pepsi, is that they're made with actual sugar (usually pure cane sugar), instead of goddamn High-Fructose Corn Syrup... In my opinion, the taste is superior.
@@x.l.a.5157 And i'd say they're full of shit, because soda made with cane sugar, as opposed to either variety of corn syrup, has a distinct, detectable difference in flavor.
Hey Gundog,
Always here to help you with translations ;) (I dso it foir KiwiDude and am starting to do it for noeast to far)
at 2:00 someting :
"はやし" or "Hayashi"="Hash" it's a savory stew like "Cornedbeff hash" but it's not 100% compatible,
for today's dish:
It's kind of an unusual dish for Japan where fish, chicken, beef, pork are more popular than duck (which is more popular in Chinese countries), but, it's a thick beef stew
This Dish is ":かも肉じゃが" or "kamo-nikujaga" which is a sweet-ish stew usually made with beef... it's Kyoto style I guess (Kamo (pronounced "kah"-moe") refers to a river in Kyoto) and nikujaga is very popular there. Not to be eaten over the rice. In general Japanese dishes are not eaten over rice. The rice is eaten sperate or with furikake on it. (exceptions being hayashi and curry)
5:14 is "さば" or "saba" .. Mackerel, that dish is in a sauce, and it's one of my favorite.
The type one crackers look like wheat or barley and toasted sesame
The little packets of powder:
Furikake == sounds like "Furry Cock-ay", it's meant to bre sprinkled on the rice as a light seasoning. With a "hayashi" you'd use one of those rices with the "hayashi" and then sprinkle the furikake on the other one)
The red packet is " すきやき" or "Sukiyaki" flavor,
the green one is 青じそびき"or"Aojisobijiki," which from the looks is a kind of spring leaf flavor.
Send me a scan of the heating bag and I'll translate it for you.
Hope this helps! Keep sending the vids!!
Karnack Will hit you up for my next JSDF Review! Cheers
Ah cool, I was going to guess it was Mackerel, because of the stripes. :)
+Karnack when i first saw them when kiwi dude was using them i thought the color coding was like the plate color coding you know like red for beef, blue for seafood. its been a while since i have been back to japan but just seeing mention of sukiyaki makes me want to go back... can not get good sukiyaki or grilled unagi in the states and the sushi places are really not good compared to those smaller shops where the chef sets each piece out in front of you right after its made. this is making me look up air fare and hotel bookings to tokyo again haha
+troberts1 youre right
+gundog4314 hello gundog4314 my name is Eugene i enjoy your videos on MRE'S i would love to try a MRE do you think you could send me 24hr ration to try please
i got to cross train with these guys, awesome experience! great guys
Gundog, "Arigato Gozaimasu." Thank you very much in Japanese. I really appreciate your videos.
"Laughing Man" sounds like a reference to the Ghost in the Shell anime series season 1. Good series.
I believe the US needs to step their game up as far as main dishes go.
I wonder what the shelf life on the Japanese rations are.
The fish/duck looks like mackerel or saba in Japanese.
The"非常用糧食"were the emergency ration,so there is one type 2 ration and two emergency rations in this vid..
楊宏志 It's all good, like I say it's the actual tasting thats the goal. Cheers
I stopped drinking a lot of soda but I make an exception for Mexican Coke. They still use pure cane sugar in their Coke instead of high fructose corn syrup and they taste so much better.
This actually looks way more edible than most of the US's MRE
+F.u.c.k it is. the mackeral has great protein with omegas as mackeral is the fattest fish and everything else is flavourful and not heavily processed
The fish side dish was Mackerel cooked in a stock with ginger.
FYI: Those Cokes are made with real sugar as opposed to high fructose corn syrup.Cokes all over the world, except in the U.S. are made with real sugar rather than HFCS.
lt is duck, see the thick fat layer that water fowls have. Are you sure it wasn't duck because that would make sense of the orange sauce, like "duck ala orange" Duck is all dark meat which would make for the flaky (stewed) texture and has about a 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick fat layer.
I am curious if they are ever going to start using the all-in-one self-heating containers in MRE rations.
the mystery meat is mackeral fish. the stew has a bit of duck
Where do you get these from? I need to know desperately lol
Orange bag was soy beef and green is perilla leaf flavour and is considered an aquired taste
100% the fish is mackerel. you can tell by the blue like tiger Stripe on the skin.
Mexican coke tends to get imported a lot, out here in Utah you can actually get cases of it at walmart and a few of local supermarkets and even 7-11s.
Dec can get them at dollar General for a dollar Lmao 😂 nothing special and I love in Alabama
It has become a big thing in the past few years. I lived in Seattle and it was HUGE out there (probably outsold bottled Coke in the gas stations). I moved back to the east coast and found it in the grocery store: $18 a 24 pack. That being said, Mexican Coke is way better than US Coke
It's the sugar used. Sugar cane vs. corn syrup.
Great review as always, keep up the good work !! Magnum, John, Peace !
Coke in NZ has begun to bring back glass bottled coke and its relatives in the last few years - it definitely tastes better then the plastic bottles, so i can relate
Laughingman, is familiar with all you reviewers, does he do any of his own? If so, mention his link please friend, Peace, Magnum.
MultiMagnum62 He is very active on mreinfo and has many pictorials of rations there. Cheers!
Thank you friend !
Why do they give you 2 rice packs? The protein part look a bit little for that amount of rice.
Watched and you made me hungry. Didn't have Japanese. I ate my chicken vindaloo and rice.
At least, you didn't call it "furry cake" :3 ;) .
BTW, this would've been the perfect opportunity to use your chop-sticks for their actual intended purpose, heh .
Lol.. I think GD's C1A1 Assault Chopsticks are for stirring only.
Kiwi Dude Maybe. I wonder, though, if that is the only reason he has them? Hmm.
Jaybird196 I also use them to stab the hands of people trying to eat my stuff lol
gundog4314 LOL. That would work ;) .
Pretty sure that was Mackerel With Ginger Sauce according to www.geocities.jp/lm_ration/en/japan/type1n-menu14.html
Here in Austria there is practically no way to get coke in a glass bottle. Sometimes they do a special set of 6*0.2l bottles in glass but that's usually around $6 which is extremely expensive but stil, I buy 'em every time. Plastic just ruins the taste, especially if you know how these plastic bottles are filled and made.
My local grocery chain just started selling them about 6 months ago as an alternative to the US fructose version. I've noticed a HUGE difference in taste and quality. The sprite is very tasty. Cheers!
Yeah it's also who it's produced. With glass they already have the bottle but with plastic there is just a blob (very hot) hanging there and then the start filling in the liquid and thereby it fills out the form. Can't be very healthy. I love glass bottles. Although so, so rare these days.
Mexican Coke! Real sugar, not corn syrup.
jmtnvalley most coke outside the states is made with real sugar
Wish we could get rid of corn syrup here.
jmtnvalley Corn syrup is cheaper and more abundant in the States. Capitalism OP.
jmtnvalley corn syrup is just Sugar separated from corn. get over yourself.
Different sugars tastes different. Corn Syrup is mainly fructose. Table sugar or common sugar is sucrose. It's not all the same.
Those star candies are called Konpeito. I might have spelled it wrong but its very famous in Japan, I order all the time and am eating them now
Glass bottle Coke... but I presume it's also real sugar! :D
+lonewolfette I used to get them when I lived in Virginia - yep real sugar - and much better than the US stuff!
They sell the Mexican Coke at a little mom and pop store locally. I'm in Kentucky, and buy them all the time. They even taste like the original Coke.
sarsaparilla? is that what you meant with mexican coke?
Great review Gundog :)
Have a wonderful weekend!
+Joan Bruse hi my name is Arturo Rodriguez I would like to try your MRI one of those MRI ration packs is there anybody out there to send me one package I'll be really grateful and I will make a review of it 2612 West 51st Street Chicago Illinois 60632
I'm delerious from fever and being sick but you cracked me up with the dogs barking, train whistles and dryer buzzers. In my feverish brain that sounded like lyrics from a silly Johnny Cash song. Also with how useful binder clips are I wonder why one isn't included in rations. Seems like they would have so many uses, including holding bags closed.
Does anyone know where I can get some of these rations? I've been looking for rations that aren't civilian or US MREs and I can't really find any. (Nothing wrong with MREs I just want something else)
That fish duck thing is mackerel. Its a fish! :)
Mexican's coke cola is original coke cola and it had the original coke cola recipe!
"Let's go ahead and..........." Get this out onto a tray? Nice?
😉
That looks like fish to me Mackerel looking at the skin.
Richard Maunder Yeah figured that out at the end of the vid. Cheers Richard!
that tube of orange sweetness is for the duck lol
Come one man, that was mackerel with that skin :)
On the Mexican Coke; it is sweetened with real sugar; not chemicals as is Coke made in the US of A. We can buy it here at Sam's Club or by the case if ordered at the local liquor store. To me used to an chemical infused US diet it taste flat. I prefer the Diet Coke made in the US of A with its chemicals, eh?
coke in usa, has not been made of chemicals in about 9 years, it does contain cocaine thats had the drug effects neutralized thats what gives it the flavor.
+DetectingCaliforniaHD Sorry, you're a bit confused. It *used* to have cocaine in it (the real stuff), but that was back in 1902. It was the tiniest trace, less than 1/400th of a grain per ounce of syrup, not even enough to give a housefly a buzz. By 1929 it was cocaine-free. So it hasn't had any cocaine at all in 88 years.
For a second I thought little 12 year old Juan sent you beer haha!
Great review.
LeifTheOldSoul Now that would have been really cool! LOL!
gundog4314 FYI coca-cola that comes in a glass bottle is always made with real sugar and not corn syrup
Your mystery meat Is mackerel.
You can tell by the blue skin man👍
The 'duck' looks like mackerel to me.
That fish looks like a very nice piece of Mackerel.
BTW those CocaColas from Mexico are made with REAL sugar not sucrose like they have
switched to years ago here in the US. Whenever I have a chance to have one of those it takes me
back to my childhood...oh except for one thing......Coke back in 60s was in 10 Oz.bottles.
About one long swallow haha.
Thanks again for the great videos.
I would love to try the jdsf ration packs where do you get them from been trying to find them
Unfortunately Japan recently made in illegal to sell these any longer. I'm sure there is a commercial version I just have not talked to my friend about it yet. Cheers
Thanks Goethe reply
For the Danny spellchecker
I feel like your comment has to be quite sarcastic if you post it on a gundog video.
P.S
I don't think it is fish..
or duck
which is scary.
What does "Type X" mean? is it like "meal" type in which people can choose from?
type x is for x-men only allowed to eat these
I was hoping juan would of send u a 12pack of coronas
Not so much Japanese, but maybe it's a Japanese version of an Indian takeaway, Bombay Duck ;)
For an MRE it does look good, Ive had Chinese (Not Japanese) takeaways here in various city centres around the UK that look less apatising.
Nice rvw gundog. Love the duckfish
That fish see like caballa coking on oil.
The coke in glass bootle you can find in mi country Argentina.
That's the great thing about Asian rice, it's amazing even by itself.
Good god, just hearing the star candy crunching
The one reviewed this time is a emergency ration
nice review! that looked pretty good!
Perhaps it was fish caught by a duck.
Holy Mackerel.......glad i stayed to the end.
I prefer Mackerel in Maryann sauce to Ginger sauce myself.
Nice to see you refer to Kiwi-Dude and Crystal here. He also refers to you...especially
when he crumbles his crackers into hs entree. haha
At end of your reviews do you ever ask your Jack Russels what they think of the meal?
Bill23799 I give them their own taste time from time to time. Cheers!
How can you get this kits?
😂duckfish ! love it
I don't like him moving the rice onto the tray like the container was literally usable. I still like watching
Where can i buy it?
That mystery meat, I am sure it's platypus, I recognize that fishy bear duck look anywhere. They say platypus is a great nutritious alternative for the troops compared to the rising price of duck.
Its not a green tea in green pac?
+UKEYsPOWER Nope, its furikake, or rice seasoning, popular in japan, specially if you are in a budget.
Let's call it Kemoto dragon. That's better than fish-duck!
Mexican coke is so much better than American coke because Mexican coke is made with sugar and not high fructose!
I agree, the local stores started carrying it about a year ago. Go well with the occasional pizza night! Cheers
Maybe it's a Duck-Fish hybrid created by the Japanese government? *HAHA*
Ahh racists, we hope you change your ways
+Frank Jr. maybe it's the same radiation that created Godzilla?
+Thomas Ith (xXAssassinSnipeXx) How was that racist?
Thx dude you brighten up my die and helps move on after gunie pig died
~JUAN~ IS MY MIDDLE NAME
Just letting you know for possible future reference (unless you did it on purpose)
At the beginning of the video Japan was written in the Chinese way XD In Japan they don't add that third character ^^
XPersona4 Really? Damn wikipedia....
XDXD the reason ya can't always trust Wikipedia
that rice usually takes 15 min to cook. in your video, looks a little bit raw.
you should wait another few minutes at next time! taste different!
waremado Raw is subjective seeing as its precooked and yes it could have stayed in the heater a bit longer. The second ration I had off camera I put it in the microwave for two minutes and it was perfect. Cheers
Where have you been for the last 10 years or so to not know about Mexican Coke? They sell it at Safeway.
Jersey Mike's Rail Videos Not really a soda drinker. Water, Tea, Beer that's more in my wheelhouse. Cheers
gundog4314 I think today or yesterday was the anniversary of 'New Coke', but the special thing about Mexican Coke, is that they never did that...its a sugarcane coke, just like we all had before the came out with New Coke and then went to Coke Classic (which does not taste as good as original Coke or Mexican Coke, IMO) Cheers!!...and thanks for all the vids, I love seeing different cultures take on an MRE!
When is it ready Because I'm very hungry 😋
Ewww hot mackerel in sauce, ick.
i would like to have a japan ration
Nice collection
itadakimasss......
Emmy did a JSDF ration - her footage may help..
Alex Cockell I know I sent it to her lol. Cheers
duckfish
By eating this everyday, the Japanese soldiers can win the war and also lose 30 pounds!
It's mackerel
The flag in the opening of the video is the flag that represent the imperialism of Japan and its call rising sun. in Asia, it is equivalent to the Iron cross of Nazis or Hakenkruez. it may be sensitive to some of the Asians as Japan invaded those countries and did the same or worst things than what Nazis did to the European countries. just for your information. hope more and more of our western friends know about it :) cheers !
P.S Don't be too sensitive Japanese. I'm just being realistic and telling him the fact.
seungjin lee Yeah someone else mentioned that too. That's exactly why you can't trust anything on wikipedia. They say it's the standard or the flap for the JSDF Ground Forces. Well now I know what not to put on my next JSDF ration review. Cheers
Thanks :) and I appreciate it !
+gundog4314 I really wish that Seungjin Lee were right, but that is a JSDF flag (8 rays). The United States let Japan use this symbol for its ground forces in 1954. They also let the maritime self defense forces use an IJN naval ensign with minimal changes (Imagine if the modern German navy used a Kriegsmarine ensign from 1940). I am sure they knew what it meant and weren't happy about it, but the US had more pressing issues at the time and let it fly.
+gundog4314 While its a touchy subject. The real rising flag(and not just the JSDF flag) have been used for like hundreds of years(first flag which still exist is from pre 1600 to be exact, however the flag itself apparently was first in use 600 ad). While the german nazi flag only was in use during the reign of Hitler, never in use before nor after. Quiet the difference if you ask me. Im no sympatizer with japanise or german facism/nazism, however we had a similar problem with Viking symboles being misused by Nazis in norway during ww2. For a while it was impossible to use them without getting automaticly branded nazi. Just because a bunch of douchebag uses some old symboles doesnt mean that everyone in the future shouldnt be allowed to take back the symboles and use it for something good. Btw the rising sun is still in use for the navy of japan.blogs-images.forbes.com/stephenharner/files/2014/07/670px-us_navy_101210-n-7191m-031_u-s-_navy_and_japan_maritime_self-defense_force_jmsdf_ships_underway_in_formation_as_part_of_a_photo_exercise_on_the_f.jpg Just google japanise navy pictures.
+seungjin lee "it may be sensitive to some of the Asians" You mean China and Korea brothers, right? Never heard from any other countries. you must be clever enough to know that the flag has been used way before the name of Korea appears on the history book. And if it were really something equals to Hakenkreuz, then why US or other allies countries say nothing about it.
P.S. Don't be sensitive....we understand your circumstances.
go ahead - gundog4314
金平糖? 😯😲
Fish duck lol
I know right?!
Mackerel is bait.
i forget the japanese are so badly with gums and candy. just are well with buble gum .
