    That "Star Candy" is called "Konpeito", it is now been list as "Japanese Candy", but by fact it is actually Portuguese, it was introduced to Japan in the 16th century, and was made famous after it was offered to Oda Nobunaga by Missionary Luis Frois in 1569, and Luis manage to obtain permit to carry out mission works for Christianity.
    And it's name "Konpeito" is also come from the Portuguese word "Confeito", which stand for comfit.

    The really cool thing about Mexican coke, and pepsi, is that they're made with actual sugar (usually pure cane sugar), instead of goddamn High-Fructose Corn Syrup... In my opinion, the taste is superior.

    • @numberyellow
      @numberyellow 3 роки тому +2

      @@x.l.a.5157 And i'd say they're full of shit, because soda made with cane sugar, as opposed to either variety of corn syrup, has a distinct, detectable difference in flavor.

    Hey Gundog,
    Always here to help you with translations ;) (I dso it foir KiwiDude and am starting to do it for noeast to far)
    at 2:00 someting :
    "はやし" or "Hayashi"="Hash" it's a savory stew like "Cornedbeff hash" but it's not 100% compatible,
    for today's dish:
    It's kind of an unusual dish for Japan where fish, chicken, beef, pork are more popular than duck (which is more popular in Chinese countries), but, it's a thick beef stew
    This Dish is ":かも肉じゃが" or "kamo-nikujaga" which is a sweet-ish stew usually made with beef... it's Kyoto style I guess (Kamo (pronounced "kah"-moe") refers to a river in Kyoto) and nikujaga is very popular there. Not to be eaten over the rice. In general Japanese dishes are not eaten over rice. The rice is eaten sperate or with furikake on it. (exceptions being hayashi and curry)
    5:14 is "さば" or "saba" .. Mackerel, that dish is in a sauce, and it's one of my favorite.
    The type one crackers look like wheat or barley and toasted sesame
    The little packets of powder:
    Furikake == sounds like "Furry Cock-ay", it's meant to bre sprinkled on the rice as a light seasoning. With a "hayashi" you'd use one of those rices with the "hayashi" and then sprinkle the furikake on the other one)
    The red packet is " すきやき" or "Sukiyaki" flavor,
    the green one is 青じそびき"or"Aojisobijiki," which from the looks is a kind of spring leaf flavor.
    Send me a scan of the heating bag and I'll translate it for you.
    Hope this helps! Keep sending the vids!!

      +Karnack when i first saw them when kiwi dude was using them i thought the color coding was like the plate color coding you know like red for beef, blue for seafood. its been a while since i have been back to japan but just seeing mention of sukiyaki makes me want to go back... can not get good sukiyaki or grilled unagi in the states and the sushi places are really not good compared to those smaller shops where the chef sets each piece out in front of you right after its made. this is making me look up air fare and hotel bookings to tokyo again haha

    FYI: Those Cokes are made with real sugar as opposed to high fructose corn syrup.Cokes all over the world, except in the U.S. are made with real sugar rather than HFCS.
    lt is duck, see the thick fat layer that water fowls have. Are you sure it wasn't duck because that would make sense of the orange sauce, like "duck ala orange" Duck is all dark meat which would make for the flaky (stewed) texture and has about a 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick fat layer.

    Here in Austria there is practically no way to get coke in a glass bottle. Sometimes they do a special set of 6*0.2l bottles in glass but that's usually around $6 which is extremely expensive but stil, I buy 'em every time. Plastic just ruins the taste, especially if you know how these plastic bottles are filled and made.

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  7 років тому

      My local grocery chain just started selling them about 6 months ago as an alternative to the US fructose version. I've noticed a HUGE difference in taste and quality. The sprite is very tasty. Cheers!

    • @alittleolder
      @alittleolder 7 років тому

      Yeah it's also who it's produced. With glass they already have the bottle but with plastic there is just a blob (very hot) hanging there and then the start filling in the liquid and thereby it fills out the form. Can't be very healthy. I love glass bottles. Although so, so rare these days.

      @SpearM3064 7 років тому

      +DetectingCaliforniaHD Sorry, you're a bit confused. It *used* to have cocaine in it (the real stuff), but that was back in 1902. It was the tiniest trace, less than 1/400th of a grain per ounce of syrup, not even enough to give a housefly a buzz. By 1929 it was cocaine-free. So it hasn't had any cocaine at all in 88 years.

    that rice usually takes 15 min to cook. in your video, looks a little bit raw.
    you should wait another few minutes at next time! taste different!

      waremado Raw is subjective seeing as its precooked and yes it could have stayed in the heater a bit longer. The second ration I had off camera I put it in the microwave for two minutes and it was perfect. Cheers

      gundog4314 I think today or yesterday was the anniversary of 'New Coke', but the special thing about Mexican Coke, is that they never did that...its a sugarcane coke, just like we all had before the came out with New Coke and then went to Coke Classic (which does not taste as good as original Coke or Mexican Coke, IMO) Cheers!!...and thanks for all the vids, I love seeing different cultures take on an MRE!

    The flag in the opening of the video is the flag that represent the imperialism of Japan and its call rising sun. in Asia, it is equivalent to the Iron cross of Nazis or Hakenkruez. it may be sensitive to some of the Asians as Japan invaded those countries and did the same or worst things than what Nazis did to the European countries. just for your information. hope more and more of our western friends know about it :) cheers !
    P.S Don't be too sensitive Japanese. I'm just being realistic and telling him the fact.

      seungjin lee Yeah someone else mentioned that too. That's exactly why you can't trust anything on wikipedia. They say it's the standard or the flap for the JSDF Ground Forces. Well now I know what not to put on my next JSDF ration review. Cheers

      +gundog4314 I really wish that Seungjin Lee were right, but that is a JSDF flag (8 rays). The United States let Japan use this symbol for its ground forces in 1954. They also let the maritime self defense forces use an IJN naval ensign with minimal changes (Imagine if the modern German navy used a Kriegsmarine ensign from 1940). I am sure they knew what it meant and weren't happy about it, but the US had more pressing issues at the time and let it fly.

      +gundog4314 While its a touchy subject. The real rising flag(and not just the JSDF flag) have been used for like hundreds of years(first flag which still exist is from pre 1600 to be exact, however the flag itself apparently was first in use 600 ad). While the german nazi flag only was in use during the reign of Hitler, never in use before nor after. Quiet the difference if you ask me. Im no sympatizer with japanise or german facism/nazism, however we had a similar problem with Viking symboles being misused by Nazis in norway during ww2. For a while it was impossible to use them without getting automaticly branded nazi. Just because a bunch of douchebag uses some old symboles doesnt mean that everyone in the future shouldnt be allowed to take back the symboles and use it for something good. Btw the rising sun is still in use for the navy of japan.blogs-images.forbes.com/stephenharner/files/2014/07/670px-us_navy_101210-n-7191m-031_u-s-_navy_and_japan_maritime_self-defense_force_jmsdf_ships_underway_in_formation_as_part_of_a_photo_exercise_on_the_f.jpg Just google japanise navy pictures.

      +seungjin lee "it may be sensitive to some of the Asians" You mean China and Korea brothers, right? Never heard from any other countries. you must be clever enough to know that the flag has been used way before the name of Korea appears on the history book. And if it were really something equals to Hakenkreuz, then why US or other allies countries say nothing about it.
      P.S. Don't be sensitive....we understand your circumstances.
