    Kids will be seeing this in a hundred years. We're very lucky to have had Alan Watts just before the internet. His Wisdom is now frozen in time and available for all, even though Alan says not to idolise I can't help but to feel extremely thankful.

      @@Dewitt-b8n yes. The will to connect with it waxes and wanes. When we are happy we ignore. Pain makes us enquire. It's more like remembrance. We keep forgetting what we are. We need no guidance but just to be in the source of consciousness. The world (maya) appears to attack us day and night. Politics, struggling to make ends meet. Difficult relations. Attachment to loved ones. Desire for love and gratification that comes from being human. The habit of seeking without when only lasting peace can come from within. Or rather it is our natural state. Edit, my comment was three years ago. It shows I have made progress on the road to nowhere lol. I don't feel Alan has much to offer me now. He is more a kindergarten teacher compared with others. Although the message is the same and he is the real deal there are more intense gurus that accelerate the process. It's not a child's play. It's serious business. Spirituality will destroy "you" and your world. To the point that your only option is to be thought free as the world of thought has nothing good to offer. It can be a rough road

    Interesting Koan. For me it inspires questioning and doubt towards authority, including the writer of the Koan and even Alan Watts himself.
    Chasing Enlightenment, Nirvana or heaven, through 'right' practises, methods, philosophies, teachers, Gurus, Koans, Buddhas and so on can inspire greatly.
    But at some point I want to take off the training wheels, explore on and off the road, at my own pace. To stop the chase and learn to dance in the vast landscape.

    • @Piitsi
      @Piitsi 9 років тому +1

      Looking back I'm troubled with this video. The kind of poetic distance this Koan gives while using killing as a metaphor for non attachment or Anatman nature of the world, is essentially anti humanist. I'm not saying that the insights from this koan are not powerful or real, but that it comes at a price, that is common in taking a path guided by ideologies, philosophies, religions and so on to extreme.
      I'm not interested just about inner peace, meditation, enlightenment and so on. But also what kind of ethics, or lack of they enable in this so called material world.
      This works precisely because the message is not literal, this in turn makes the message easier to swallow and harder to criticise.

      +Piitsi Hello Piitsi, I hope so that you will read this... I read philosophers, books about happiness, dreams, goal etc. a lot about budhism and bhagavad gita and you have beautiful opinion. the example with training wheels which we carry on whole life cause we are influenced from the outside world, and maybe thats only opinion which was given to me :D

    • @Piitsi
      @Piitsi 7 років тому

      Thank you for the comment. I agree with you. However, literal statements are easy to criticise on their factual basis. It is more difficult to criticise non literal statements. Koans, poems or religious statements are convincing in their wisdom, because of their non literal nature, not despite of it. Effective because they imply to what can't be simply described or debated.
      My understanding of oriental wisdom is, that it points to world beyond definitions. To directness of experience, to unity, to mysticism that gives access to universality. This powerful poetic wisdom can inspire, both great compassion and great violence, as we know from the history.
      For example in China preceding Zen, both Taoist and Buddhist sought directness and "true nature", opposing formalism of Confucianism in its layered artificiality. This way gave many peace of mind in the turmoil of violent Chinese politics. Sometimes learned citizens retrieved to meditate outside of cities becoming free Hermits without attachments(often still with group of servants, funnily enough, I would also like to do the same ;)). In 2nd. World War the desire for directness in Zen later manifested in military ethics and punishment for impure Chinese who lost their way.
      My comment was to offer criticism to the ideology of the "way" as idealised mode of direct being, life without illusions, without hypocrisy, without attachment. There is a lot of value in this wisdom, but it can also become puritan and seek to clean the artificiality by violent terms. This is not surprising since focusing only on negative freedom breeds disgust for those who tarnish the freedom by simply being on the way.
      I want to cherish all aspects of life, not only directness of the way, or eternal wisdoms. I also want a love of a partner, respect for particularity, compassion for temporary, love for paintings, art and artificiality, not just the real behind it. And most of all, to highlight the world as a landscape of possibilities, not as a way where those who stray are seen as fools engaged with the temporary dreams, hopes and romance, when in fact they are explorers.

    Almost two years later I can still say that this video had an big impact for me. But not in the way of just marvelling it's message. I'm staring to understand ideology of "actuality", against "surface relationships". The rule: be bound to nothing is an ideological bound in itself, and invites endless process of purification from influence.
    I think the poetic violence of the koan is also problematic, but fits the modern ideology very well: Reinvent yourself, don't get attached, purify your experience, transcend your emotions, go all the way. This appeals to the heroic struggle of pure freedom. In struggle ideology takes your resistance to account, but makes you feel that this resistance is a weakness. Proving yourself and overcoming this weakness feels like a liberation, but there is a hangover coming. Weakness here could be the relationships you have. Not just hierarchy, but value you put on basic sociality, your emotional responses, politeness, customs, culture etc.
    Fundamentalist too can love revolts, suchness, and fantasy of total brutal freedom, but maybe the morning after not so much. Challenge with ideology is not to go further to find more ecstasy and liberation. It's the long walk back to a neutral position, where you can once again see value in other points of views. To see and even appreciate the vast landscape of possibilities, not just the fundamentality, pure actuality, pure truth, pure freedom, etc.

      @Blake Henson respectfully, you do not need any of that. This is just a form of trying grasp all things that you feel are supposed to stay. I lost my mom two days after brith and lost my dad a couple months ago. My life has been nothing but loss and pain, and all the money in the world wouldn’t change a thing for me, it may just create more issues, if anything. Remember that fortunes often bring their own misfortune. Nothing is forever and I am sorry that your dad may have left, but one way or another all of our parents will leave us, just as we will leave those we care for. Enjoy everything as everything in life is fleeting and trying to hold onto things only creates more pain for us in the end. A quote that I like to try to heed every day, especially on the toughest ones is this one: “Everything will be okay when you learn to be okay with everything”
      Peace and love 🖤

    @7:15: "If you meet St. Augustine, K'iLL him". Best line ever. His unconscious served this up, because Augustine is the one that coined & pioneered using the belief in universal free-will as psychological warfare (but he probably really believe he was doing gods work). It became a cash-cow for shame, using the lie of sin & teaching children they deserve to burn in real fire for eternity. Even getting parents to really actually believe this and teach their children. Thats why he must go so far to say, if you meet your parents kill them. Kill the toxic ideology that they were abused with and now just shadow projecting from one generation to the next (see also: The way of a superior man). This is the schizogenic double-bind theory that Watts also talks about.

    Thanks to Alan, I believe I am a god - like anyone else should. Alan is right to claim the box containing all boxes has no walls/ends, but he falsely concludes that God is infinite. God is subtle-& subliminal intelligence of the future. The reason why the box is open and not enclosed is because God is the inverse of infinity, literally less than the infinitely small. It cannot be represented as a shape. Shape is symptom of space. Space is symptom of more things.
    Visualize what I say as a line, |. This line contains the truth. The truth is derived from the infinity, O. In the beginning there was darkness, •, then on the first day there came light, O. It was on _this_ day God died - with a single heart beat. His death can therefore be represented either as a cross, +, or as a vector, 7, or as the letters d & D (wave format). This is the cross over, the beginning of light. And so, Man's reality was finally born (space and time).
    Either God truly is dead and we're living the aftermath, or God (the true observer; the one who sees with his eyes and hears with his ears and feels with his feels) is hiding in the mists among his creation completely alone to the truth sarcastically hiding the truth from himself (or just really good at keeping it secret from others) or he continues to observe in darkness but no longer in control over our bodies at all time. Whatever the truth may be, I know he's alive because my mind does not have free will. It's easy to agree, but one must _know_ the truth before accepting the truth. Only God reveals the knowing. You'll know when that moment comes. It's a bizarre sensation.
    Language and mathematics are part truths. You'll never be revealed the while/whole truth with only either one alone.
    There's truth in the American flag, as well as in the (black) Celtic cross.
    Man is synonymous with God … Seek the black Sun

    God is there and isn’t there. He is the past, present and future, everything that has existed, exists and will exist is him.
    Jesus was killed because unlike every other religion, he didn’t believe that getting to heaven was based off good points or a life of moral perfectness because logically nobody is perfect. Every other religion teaches for you to find god, Jesus comes to find you.
